Overwatch 2 is launching free-to-play on PS5 and PS4 later this year, completely replacing the original game when it does. Obviously, publishers need to make money from these games somehow, and so F2P titles tend to contain many ways to incentivise players to cough up a little something. With its upcoming hero shooter sequel, Blizzard Entertainment seems to be testing the limits of what constitutes a microtransaction.
In a recent survey sent out to players, the publisher asks several questions about how much one would be willing to spend on cosmetic items in the game. Perhaps most notably, Blizzard asks whether players would be likely to pay $45 for a Mythic character skin — the rarest (and coolest) kind. This seems like an astronomical number for a single fancy costume.
Other prices raised in the survey include $10 for weapon charms, a legendary skin for $25, and various bundles at similarly questionable rates.
Obviously, this is just a survey, so Blizzard is simply gathering data here. Depending on the results it receives (and we'd wager most aren't happy to pay these price tags), the publisher might bump up or bring down those MTX costs. Naturally, the in-game economy will evolve over time, too, so this is far from the end of it.
We'll have to wait and see what the final game has in store when it arrives in October. How do you feel about this? Are these survey questions cause for concern? Is this just the way F2P games are heading? Discuss in the comments section below.

100% of the vote was "Nothing", ha!
... then I realised it was just me. lol
It must be a generational thing, I simply don't care what my character/avatar looks like. And the idea of paying for it... never.
I’m glad it’s a small amount saying they’d pay and it’s a small fee under 9 dollars.
We have to turn the tide and get the industry back on the right track
Just say no kids
I have been tempted to pay for cosmetics in other games that I really enjoy playing, but I don't think I've ever paid more than a few £££ for anything. Spending upwards of £10 on anything cosmetic — especially just one costume — seems insane to me, even in a free-to-play game.
Just the way my brain's wired, I suppose.
Why not 100 dollars? Why stop there?
"Would you pay almost full price for something that adds absolutely nothing to the game?"
Yes, of course, I would. I love adding to the destruction of one of my favorite hobbies and passion.
I said $45 or more
I accidentally bought coins in Garden Warfare 2 once and I still feel bad about it years later, lol.
Bad times when a games company asks if we're willing to pay for cosmetics . Easier if they made it unlockable in the game
I'd never pay more than a £2 for ANY cosmetic - whether its 'commonly' available or artificially limited. Its a 'cosmetic' and adds nothing and I wouldn't pay more for some 'cosmetic' than I could buy an entire Game for. In my opinion, earned cosmetic rewards are more 'meaningful'.
Whenever I see anyone in games with 'premium' cosmetic items, I always think there is someone with a LOT more money than working brain cells, some 'idiot' who is feeding the money grabbing predators.
The last cosmetic I bought was for Black Ops 2 (360 era) and was just one of the Cosmetic animated weapon skins that could be used on ALL weapons, sights and also other cosmetics for about £2 - pocket money, loose change cost.
I’m not interested in Overwatch 2 but I do play Fortnite. I’m not against buying skins in F2P games but even I wouldn’t pay $45 (or the £ equivalent).
This just reminds me of when Apple released the £15k Apple Watch (and that went down like a lead balloon). I think this will get the same reception.
Maybe the YouTubers will buy it?
No I'd buy a better game with that
As the article states, something tells me we should stop calling these "micro"transactions.
That is highway robbery right there! Skins if purchasable and not unlockable should be no more than $3-5! It would be a cold day in hell before I'd pay that amount!
The only skins I pay for come in a bucket with the Colonel's face on it
Hey they could be owned by microsoft soon, they dont need our money, so id stick to pay nothing to play
The temptation is always there but for that price you can buy a full game. So no.
They could ask the guy that blew $100k on Diablo Immortal.
Considering the most a LOL skin costs is about $30 AUD anything above that is just ludicrous, you'd have to be getting like 3 high quality skins in one and this is from the perspective of an ex-addict of League of Legends so for a normal person anything over $20 AUD for any cosmetic in a F2P game is just not worth it. FYI these prices are pretty normal in these types of games and many can justify buying these skins as they get 1000s of hours out of these games and are often the only game some people play at all. I'm not condoning these practices but there is 100% a market for this content, it has been in PC gaming for well over a decade at this point. I just don't think this really suits the console market at all. It isn't like any of these cosmetics make a game P2W because if that were the case (especially in competitive game) the game would be abandoned.
I'd spend that on a game, not for one lousy skin in a game, I don't see why they're not about £2 tops
@ShogunRok when I get a free game (either ps plus or f2p) and I enjoy and do play the game, I tend to "waste" a few € buying cosmetics in order to support the developer.
Rocket League and Fall Guys may be the best examples I can remember, however, 45€ for a skin... I don't have that much support to give
I would gladly pay £300 for a skin of a free to play game 🙏🏻 please take my money now
I mean... I'm sure there are people out there who would accept that, but anything more than a tenner is taking the piss out of the term "microtransactions".
Personally, I'm really hard pressed to fork over more than a few bucks for cosmetic items. They may look neat, but I can't justify that spending - and knowing they're there means I get bummed out about the skin I do have. So I bounce off the game entirely instead.
Keep in mind I lived and breathed Overwatch back in 2017-2019. I don't think I've had quite as intense a fandom for any other game in my adult life. Even after Blizzard let the IP squander in recent years, I still want to be hyped for OW2... But if it comes with this particular level of greedy nonsense, I won't be able to hit the "uninstall"-button hard enough.
I voted for a lack of interest. But the truth is that Overwatch was the game that made me swear off lootboxes and any other game with these manipulative practices. I blew ~£60 in a weekend on lootboxes gambling for a seasonal legendary skin that I thought was never going to come back if I missed it. Then the following year they did the same event again, and the skins from the previous year were available again, and with a price making them purchasable with the in-game currency you get in dribs and drabs when you get dupes from lootboxes. I remembered blowing the £60 the previous year and felt so manipulated by the manufactured sense of FOMO that I turned off Overwatch immediately and stopped playing. To the best of my knowledge I haven't played a game with lootboxes since.
No. Just no. I’m not spending a dime on Overwatch 2 at this rate. I figured I might need to buy some character unlocks or something, but $45 for a skin is ridiculous. I’d rather the game just be $70 and have in-game unlocks.
The way this one is shaping up, I wouldn’t be surprised if the first game ends up far superior to the second due to these practices. Blizzard should be far more careful with this one. They’ve had enough bad PR the past couple years. This could be the next Cyberpunk size implosion (albeit for different reasons completely) if they are too greedy.
Blizzard can go F itself.
These are virtual items though and therefore only as ‘rare’ as the amount of times the devs decide to list them for sale.
This is one of those times where you guys really need to loosen up a bit on what's allowed in the comments. Not everything needs to be a big discussion, this is one of those times where a simple 'No' or what I tried to write 'LMAO! No.' is more than appropriate and more doesn't need to be typed.
@StrickenBiged wow this is a brilliant insight into how sickening loot boxes are
This is one of the things I dislike most about free-to-play games.
Also, Overwatch was only $40 when was it released back in 2016.
Rizla is the only skins you need and Blizzard must surely be using them and smokin heavily charging 45quid for a skin.😆
I wouldn’t even pay $45 for Overwatch 2 …
Honestly guys, I think I'd rather pay £45 for a proper DLC season pass than just for one skin.
45 bucks for a really awesome neato skin and 10 bucks for pretty charms for weapons? Not interested, but I'll wager that Punky Brewster, Pee-wee Herman, and Forrest Gump can hardly wait.
Dude, it's a freakin' mythic skin! That's easily worth $45 per match that you use it.
Here's the thing, assuming it's ten times as expensive as a regular skin, if only 10% of the regular spenders buy it, then it's the same profit for them as releasing a regular skin. If more people buy it, it's more profitable than a regular skin.
And to think this all started because of Horse Armour...
The poll went about exactly how I expected. Overwatch is old news and charging too much for skins would be suicide.
$45 or more. No question about it.
Ugh, I miss loot boxes. Never thought I'd say that.
Wouldn't pay for a skin if you paid me to buy it. I guess my multiplayer peak was just at the right/wrong time for me to embrace this cosmetic crap, we used to unlock all the cosmetic stuff by playing and then buy a pass or map pack for half of that price and get real, meaningful content added to the game!
I'd rather use the money on a full game
NO,one dollar is enough for a skin next they will charge you every time you boot the game just enter you card number in the game or no play that is soon probably from EA
The thing is, if they get 0.1% of the player base saying "Sure, we'll pay $45 for that skin!" then they're happy, and it will be profitable. It costs them almost nothing to make and to host, so 0.1% of, say, 100,000 players is $4,500. Increase the player base or get that percentage up to 1%, and you're making a lot of money for something that's practically free to make.
Why do you think those idiots keep sending emails or calls for extended car warranties, or that the prince of Nigeria needs your money laundering skills? They don't care if 99.9% of the people don't fall for the scam - they make enough money off the 0.1% to be profitable. Same deal here.
I will never pay for cosmetics. I wouldnt even pay that for the game
This f@#£!*? horse armour is getting out of control.
I wouldn't pay anything for overwatch 2 in the first place. Let alone a bl**dy skin.
I'm pretty sure it's something outrageous like £200 in apex legends to get character specific heirloom weapons when they have those events on. Although you do get all the other event cosmetics for that amount it's the fact you have to go through that to get it especially since most of the cosmetics tend to be for characters I don't use or like. I can see why ActiB would try this out. It's worse on mobile games.
@johnny30 - I miss unlockable content in games so much in general
@themightyant same here, i don't care much how my character looks and if at some point i do care enough that i wanna change the looks of my character there are always free skins to choose from just to change things up a bit.
I think it's a generational thing too.
i care a lot more about being good at the game itself, not that i'm any good at shooters anyway, but sometimes i try.
@Luigia Yeah, not proud of it. I accept I willingly spent the cash at the time - I really wanted that skin! Now I can't even remember if I even won it. I have no idea how much I'd have paid for the skin outright if they just offered it to me for a cash price - that's the thing about loot boxes, the 'I'll just open one more pack' mentality takes over. In principle I have no problem with Overwatch offering skins for £45 though provided they drop the loot-boxes. At least that's a fair transaction where you know what you're getting and how much it costs.
@StrickenBiged Thats why i sold the game. 🤪
@naruball There's always the $25,000 600i Executive-Edition Ship in Star Citizen if you want to get your wallet out...
https://rarest.org/entertainment/expensive-star-citizen-ships
H*ll no!
But this is the day and age where companies have trained people to be not only accepting of outrageous MTX/Loot Boxes/ways to be fleeced, they're actually becoming in favor of this practice.
So I've no doubt there are many people who would say yes to this in a heartbeat. 🤦♂️
@StrickenBiged I’m that old I remember games rewarding you with extras just for playing and finishing the game.
Now it seems people pay to play and miss out on the fun or being rewarded for playing.
@themightyant dear God...
@themightyant .....and people moan about Sony charging $70 for a full game....
I suppose we derserve tuis future
Everybody championing Gamepass as value for money gaming are fools who arr being slowly hooked to convertbto digital game rental once GP anf F2P brcome the norm then we will be paying $100 to given an access code to be play to even start the game and once in game another $80 to unlock playability..........
But by that time it will be too late to turn anything around......
For examble i play mortal kombat mobile because my ps4 is dirty and hence overheat so not bothered to clean it and too broke to pay someone to clean it
But Nethereal just released The JOKER as a playable character but you can't unlock him by playing or grinding you have to buy him for half the price of a full PS5 game.
Now if they can make half the money of a full priced nexr gen game....... why would they even bother spending millions on developing anything nee or innovative if they can print money by gating game access and playability.........
Its one of the reasons i also want to go in development .... i mean if u can make a game like fall guys and gimjicky but hookey machanics and things inside the game the slowly hook the players into buying ingame items at ridiculous price and then keep updating the game with in game events for FOMO and print money till eternity ala Fortnite, FIFA , GTA and all other microtransanction based games
i’m rich so yeah
@GREGORIAN in the end only multiplayer games suffer from this so i think most people on this site will just gloss over what you said
@nomither6 .... its besides that.......
What I'm saying is that Blizzard is not actually surveying to see how many people are willing to shell $45 for cosmetic item which do not even cost a kilobyte of code to make.
Why they are trying find ouy is how much backlash will resuly anf how much backlash will result it bad reputation for overwatch. Remember this was a full game during Ps4 era now its sequal is a F2P on next gen and it has a cosmetic items costing over half the original full game at releases........
Even EA dropped FiFa marketing/branding only because they know they have FUT sheep who are now converted give away their money freely to EA for packs.
So it was cheaper to focus on cosmetic microtransanction and try to get gamers to get used to them and tell them about it via a psuedo survey so that when the actual game has basic generic skins and the only decent ones being locked being $45 mtx, then Blizzard will say the survey showed them that gamers were happy with the mtx locked skins ......
We are left with probably the last 6 years 8 at max of pre-online game design paradigm.
Ps6 if it even launched will be a non disc based drm always online only game rental console.....
But you barely see your character…. 😂
@Nalodart you can see their hands/arm and gun/weapon and some skins have extra voice lines
@GREGORIAN they ain’t gonna get away with it . i think we’ll be fine . people are dumb but we’re also broke too 😂 (i lied about me being rich btw)
@nomither6 .....you just cracked me up.... you are just a funny dude.
And correct ou4 brokeness will stop the industry from running crazy just like we are doing right now as we have not spend as much on gaming as last year and now the execs are panicking.
But next year is insane ........ i mean so many great games coming up
