CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed an impressive 20 million copies sold. The open world RPG is closing in on its second anniversary, and if you've been following the game since its incredibly rough launch back in December 2020, then you'll know that it's been quite a wild ride.
Indeed, 2077's initial release was nothing short of a disaster — especially on last-gen consoles. In an unprecedented move, Sony actually took the title off the PlayStation Store for a number of months until it was in better technical shape. Not too long after that, in February of this year, the much improved PS5 version released, and Cyberpunk 2077 got a second chance.
The game actually sold very well on release (that's the power of marketing!) but it wasn't until the aforementioned PS5 version, which arrived alongside a massive update on all platforms, that Cyberpunk 2077 really started taking off.
And just recently, the game has received a colossal popularity boost thanks to the push of another big update, and the release of the fantastic Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime. It's fair to assume that CDPR has made a lot of sales over the last few weeks in particular — a theory that's hard to doubt when the game is breaking concurrent player records and posting crazy engagement numbers.
It's been quite the turnaround, then, and some will no doubt argue that CDPR, in its efforts to correct its past mistakes, deserves the success. 20 million sales, after all, is a figure that most games can barely even dream about.

Glad they can turn it around. 20 million is still a lot by any measure, but does this figure count extant copies only, or do the ones returned count in this number since they were "sold"?
Edit: I've been informed the returns were only a small percentage, and therefore would not dramatically impact this impressive figure.
Are all those the returns excluded? Also a bit inflated as a majority of those sales were heavily discounted - I picked up a collector edition at Best Buy for $10
I'd heard they had improved the game no end since those early builds, so I jumped back in on PC last week.
Its now a completely different experience, no bugs and I'm running 4K ultra RT @60hz,. which does look pretty special.
Now that I can finally see what they created, I have to acknowledge its pretty good, even if I have issues with it being described an RPG.
But given the way they behaved and they way they tried to hide its issues, I'm actually disappointed they are getting a good return on that behaviour.
It's a great game with great characters. Glad they could turn it around.
Would anyone recommend getting this for either the PS4 Pro or PS5?
That's a crazy number.
Their share price is the highest its been in a few months too. If they nail the Witcher upgrade and this DLC, they might just be on the comeback trail.
@Zombie9ers @d-slice Last we heard, the number of returns counted for a tiny fraction of overall sales, so even if they are counted, it probably wouldn't matter.
@KnightRider1982 The PS5 version is the one to get — it runs great these days and it's highly rated by many.
The PS4 version has come a long way, but it's still lacking in a lot of areas — I wouldn't recommend it, especially since it's no longer being updated. But you can buy the PS4 version and upgrade to the PS5 version for free.
Played through it last month and loved it. I’m glad it’s sold so well.
As someone who has never played a Witcher game and Cyberpunk 2077 being my first ever CDPR game on PS4 its only correct that whatever new CDPR game comes next I won't be rushing out to pre order it day one hell no. All is not lost though with how they're improving Cyberpunk albeit taking a super longtime to get it right and me cheaply purchasing the complete edition of Witcher 3 last year just for the remastered PS5 version, they have time and chances to smooth things out over time with everyone who purchased the disastrous Cyberpunk launch on last gen. Although I will never forget Cyberpunk getting released in the state it did on last gen will stick with me forever. Thought I was playing a PS1 game at many points throughout my first playthroughs on PS4 when all the details wouldn't load in like plasticine characters
Well deserved. I played it on PC, and loved every minute of it. Now use that money for more Story expansions!
One expansion in the world they created is not enough. Just Palmer and Goro Takemura deserve one each
i'll probably buy it when i get my hands on a ps5
While it may be a better game now it still saddens me that a lot of those sales most likely were from people who bought the game at release for their PS4/XO and got disappointed
I decided to jump back in now that it's on sale, I still wish they added more to the romance options, once you've booed them up. The only thing you can do is text it's pretty bland on that note.
I really don't understand the "well deserved" and pats on the back CDPR is receiving.
So we've all forgotten the scam they pulled at launch?
I'm not saying the devs didn't work their a***s off to make it finally playable more than a year after launch (when it should've been at launch), cause they did, but do you think they are the ones reaping the rewards of this sales milestones? Cause the ones doing that are exactly the same managers who pulled the scam in the first place.
So no, not well deserved in the slightest.
@Beerheadgamer82 Same and this will probably be the one and only game I ever buy from them again.
@KnightRider1982 Do not get it for last gen as you will be screwing yourself over cause of CDPR stating that the recent update is the last for ps4 systems.
Wow that’s sad how much sales fell off a cliff. It sold I think 18 million at launch and has only managed another two million in the two years since yikes!
@Beerheadgamer82 Cyberpunk made me realize to wait a few weeks on any game CDPR releases and wait for people to talk about what features they lied about.
@KnightRider1982 too slow, too much story. I bought it after it was “upgraded” only game in years I shut off and put on eBay in years
@JudgeDredd same! One of the few games in a long time I turn off after about 15 hours and said “***** these *****” and put on eBay.
Last gen versions apart (which really shouldn't have been released) people seem to forget the absolute mess that the Witcher 3 was when it released.
@Nepp67 @pharos_haven wait for many reviews and check social media and YouTube on release day for what many other gamers will be saying on CDPR next new game. I mean if its something you really want and there's no glitches that ruin the overall experience then go for it. There is so many that adore Witcher 3 and I'm hoping I'll eventually be one of those too
I wont be buying this and the well deserved for what the blatant lies, fixed reviews and their destroyed name which is totally deserved btw.
Its kinda shocking how much slack they get for their total disrespect towards the customer. We even had a few weirdos here that even went so far to blame the customer for buying a PS4 version.
If you see what kind of hate some people give towards some studio's for way less its just baffling the 20 million copies show that the customer does not deserve better i guess.
@Athrum I know they should have never lied and never shown fake clips of which they knew it was not even working on PS4.
The power of hype..
Preem
I'm not going to say well deserved as i don't feel that's right saying that but i am happy the games bounced back as on PS5, Series and PC its fantastic. Very excited for the Expansion.
@KnightRider1982 PS5 hell yes but don't ever get this on PS4 or X1.
@KnightRider1982 Trust me even on PS4 with some streaming issues and bugs, there's still a lot of fun in there than most bland bugless games.
@TheArt simple true.
@clvr Nah you're right, that launch shouldn't be forgotten or forgiven. But that doesn't mean you can't also praise the developers for doubling down and trying to improve things.
CDPR probably couldn't afford to walk away from it, but at the same time, it's arguably putting in more effort than it needed to in terms of making it a better game.
Still, even with all of the people saying the game deserves a second chance and this level of success, etc., the reality is that CDPR's next game will be met with increased scrutiny. The damage has been done on that front.
CDPR can go some ways in repairing people's perspective of Cyberpunk, but reassuring people that they can be trusted again on the whole will take more time.
@Flaming_Kaiser Slack? They got hammered mercilessly left and right for the product they put out. They've done a decent job improving on it, but we don't have to exaggerate and say they got some kind of free pass at launch.
@bozz I don't know what exactly these guys expect us to do to CDPR right now, waterboard them, torture them...After all the backlash at launch, heck CP2077 is the definition of over promised and underdelivering you can find in the dictionary, people use it as a yardstick for flops on the internet. Does it mean it shouldn't be fixed...My friend @Flaming_Kaiser never gets tired of holding his pitchfork out.
Good it all turned well in the end. CDPRED made lots of mistakes with this game in the beginning, but they admited their fault and strived to make it right. Cyberpunk 2077 is a great game now.
@TheArt People can be mad at them if they want. Personally I feel they've done a nice job fixing up the game even if their rep never recovers despite this fix. But to say they got slack at the time of the release is just outright incorrect given that they still get hammered for it as if they've never updated and fixed the game.
Poor game, like a Far Cry with less freedom
@EchoRange Nah FARCRY is just brainless, albeit fun. It's just 5 is over brainless, with a mute protag and enemies spawning everywhere. Though finding stashes was clever and varied. Cyberpunk 2077 on the other hand has soul and immersion.
@shogunrok sorry but what? 'doubling down' when the cops issue is finally fixed, it will be approaching 2 1/2years for the game to be at slightly better state than a day 1 release. and still not playable on ps4, and that wont change.
a company doesnt deserve any praise for that. biggest gaming scam in a long time.
thats without mentioning an empty barren city, bad story no buildings to enter.
edit - they had no choice but to fix it as they lost all consumer confidence, without a fix the company was done.
I'm surprised to see how many folks are still upset about the launch. Yes, it was a disaster. Yes, we shouldn't forget about it. However, CDPR has taken their lumps and come out on the other side. No one is saying their reputation is golden again now but we should celebrate how far the game has come from launch and hope that the team has learned from the many mistakes made with Cyberpunk to the benefit of their future endeavors.
Plus if you love games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls but don't own an Xbox or a nice PC? Guess what? CDPR is practically the only game in town now making these sorts of games for Playstation so it serves your best interest to want them to succeed.
We will never learn. Truly, we are doomed to repeat our mistakes. The best I can naively hope for is that CDPR management learned the right lessons for this, but I am doubtful.
@korgon if one company gets away with a free pass, whats to stop others releasing games in such a shi*ty state?
what other product would you wait 2yrs for it to work as intended, then suck their d*ck for that?
Thats nice i kinda like the Cyberpunk world. Maybe they should take over Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 franchise too. I don't see it taking off
I knew I should’ve waited to platinum it on PS5. Nonetheless, I’m pumped to play the DLC expansion. It will be fantastic.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was an incredible anime. Not overdrawn and finishes the story perfectly. We don’t need a 100 ep anime for everything. David Martinez was such a lovable character despite not being a “good guy”. Wish we had more of him but his story arc was insane and has tremendous rewatchability.
I know it has its critics but I loved it...
@stvevan Barren city? Not on PS5, Series and PC as its full of life on them. Can't enter buildings? Have you played it? You can enter loads of buildings.
@Korgon Cause the betrayal was HUGE when it came to CDPR they were above so many developers with how consumer friendly and transparent they've been during Witcher 3. To see all that basically disappear with Cyberpunk is saddening and why people have a hard time forgiving CDPR. It's just sad that there's always going to be a developer that will break your trust due to terrible upper management.
I loved the game and the small amount of vocal naysayers are empathtically drowned out by 20million voices of understanding and reason
@stvevan
But that's just it. They have already taken plenty of flak for what happened for two years now. CDPR didn't get a free pass at all. They have worked hard to get it to a good place and deserve a bit of credit for that.
Like I said their reputation isn't nearly restored to the place it was at before Cyberpunk's release but all we can do is hope they learned from the experience and are better for it. Capcom came back from a rough patch. I see no issue in hoping CDPR comes back as well.
@korgon so the xb1/ps4 version were released as coffee coasters, and are still that.
it would be like sony going here is your ps5.....6mnth later they give you the plug.... then dualsense.... then the thumb sticks. making it finally playable. you wouldnt praise them, so why should i?
i have no problems in hoping cdpr come strong. should witcher overcome faults on ps5, i will praise them. but as consumers we should still never let them forget the scam they pulled. it shows them and others we wont accept that practice.
@stvevan
Actually it sounds like it's fine on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. It's the old systems that struggle but like I said I'm not saying forget what happened, I'm just saying they deserve credit for getting it to a great place now.
What happened with launch PS4 and Xbox One models was a mistake no doubt. In all honesty they should have just canceled the last gen versions all together but that horse has been beaten to death and then some. They have moved on and I'm just shocked people haven't moved on as well.
I was very upset when Naughty Dog updated Uncharted 2 multiplayer to 1.05 back in the day and completely broke the game balance but I...you know...got over it. I'm glad I did too, otherwise I never would have played TLOU1 and whatnot.
if a game is in active developement even after it releases (as is the case with cyberpunk), can you even say the game turned a profit yet? it is very rare for a single player game to have 100% (or more) of its original development team still working on a game full time one and a half years later. all those costs need to be factored into this in determining if 20m sales is even enough to turn a profit for cdpr. the marketing campaign was massive as well so i doubt the game has made much money for cdpr all things considered. and no, i do not trust any claim by cdpr on the contrary. we have learned that they cannot be trusted, obviously.
A lot of these sales are from early days that customers were ripped off to pay the highest amount for the lowest quality
I borrowed my brothers copy and played it for a while on my ps5 (pre ps5 update) and whilst it had a few issues i thought the vitriol shown towards the game was extreme and i'll add for me as a personal experience before the usual suspects get their thongs in a bunch for thinking i'm speaking for them..i bought a really cheap almost brand spanky new copy of ebay and i am planning on playing it at some point but not just yet..too many games out soon so it will just have to wait a bit longer..
@bozz They fixed a product people payed for whats there to be gratefull for? I dont want to be sound full of hate but why do companies need to be praised for fixing their broken products?
They went so far they got and where kicked out of the PSN store and they have been sued for how bad it was. And pushing back reviews to let it slip under the radar how bad it really was.
I thought this was a turning point for what companies can get away with and then we got BF 2042. I just dont like when people say they fixed as if its a nice thing the product was totally broken and i believe its their job to fix it.
Its a payed for product and i still believe its something that should work with some quality control. That people accept these things as normal is even more shocking.
But enough of this there are bigger issues in the world especially now.
@Flaming_Kaiser Okay? So how did they get slack of they were dropped from the PS store and sued? A lot of this comment seems a little unreasonable to me, and I'm by no means taking their side here.
One can both criticize a product's launch for not delivering what was advertised while at the same time acknowledge the lengths the makers have gone to in order to correct their mistakes and improve on the product's flaws. It's far from an either/or situation. The game released in a bad state, though not completely unplayable, but is now at a point where it's a good game, if not very good. You can be both harsh on the launch and comment the fixes that have come since, doing so won't give away your moral high ground as a consumer. That doesn't mean you are fine with bad launches and that the entire industry is as well because I guarantee the bigger takeaway from this is the poor launch rather than the improvements since, but that still shouldn't take away from the improvements.
No one accepted this game and the state it came out in as normal. That's a bit of an exaggeration given that many people still treat this game as a fully broken mess in 2022 even though it's far from that.
@KnightRider1982 I bought it initially on PC, then on PS5 recently and I'll say that if you get it on sale you will not regret it on either of those systems. Game is genuinely a fun adventure.
Crap sells, just listen to the pathetic garbage people listen to.
20 million sales is impressive, despite whatever you may think of the game itself or CD Projekt Red.
