Tokyo Game Show is in full swing right now, and part of the festivities is the Japan Game Awards. All the winners have been announced, and among them is Sony's first-party open world epic, Horizon Forbidden West.
Aloy's sophomore outing is one of several titles to earn the Award for Excellence:
Other winners in this category are Resident Evil Village, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Tales of Arise, and Elden Ring. The latter of these also takes home the Game of the Year grand prize. Indie hit Inscryption takes home an award for game design. In case you're wondering, the window for eligibility in Japan Game Awards is 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2022.
While most of the games recognised are Japanese, it's nice to see Horizon getting a nod. It's one of our favourites this year so far, too. What do you think? Is Horizon Forbidden West worthy of its Excellence award? Polish your trophies in the comments section below.

Fully deserved, great game!
Its a great game with lots to do but it does feel like Horizon 1.5. I hope they push themselves for Horizon 3 instead of just doing more of the game.
Well deserved, even more so considering other developers have not released much this year.
Amazing game to play and beautiful exploration.
Hopefully number three will be PS5 only and show us what these developers can do.
I could see Horizon beating Elden ring, but God of war is coming.
Ain't played it since launch week..put in 5 hours and it's meh...overhyped and the only exclusive I actually bought day 1...typical...loved Ghost of Tsunami and God of war though
Well deserved. Beautiful game, beautiful franchise. Hoping there will be many more outing with Aloy in the future. Amazing developer, amazing publisher.
I got Horizon Forbidden West in release date and played all the way till the end because I really liked it. But the ending was bad. The final boss had the most generic motive imaginable and basically the game just ends...
On a more positive note I played on a launch model PS4 but with an SSD drive and the performance was great!
Great game great series I was a tiny bet let down by the story and how ubrupt the ending was (and how they utterly wasted my favourite Horizon character Talanah) but overall a fantastic game always rooting for Aloy ^__^
One of the best games I've played this year, and definitely a contender for game of the year.
Yes most definitely deserved, I just hope it continues to get the recognition it deserves and doesn't become too overshadowed by Elden Ring.
Well deserved. Definately wears the crown for most beautiful open world, and I thought the secondary quests and missions were much more varied and interesting than most games.
This wont be the only show where Elden Ring takes game of the year...
I more excited to see what Guerrilla is working on next, after some dlc (and VR game) I hope they let the Horizon IP rest for a bit. I mostly enjoyed FW but it did feel more like an expansion to ZD rather than a full blown sequel.
Well deserved, my game of the year so far
Loved this game with every fiber of my being!!! Played it mostly weekends for six months racking up over 190 hours and still have side stuff to do at some point. My GotY!!! I’m hoping GoW:R will be my co GotY… Elden ring who???
Absolutely deserved! It's my GoTY (so far..) and probably THE most technically astonishing game on PS4. How they got it to look so good on 2013 hardware is beyond me.
Forbidden West was a little disappointing for me also. I did enjoy some parts but the story and writing were not on the same level as in Zero Dawn. The Far Zenith baddies and the ending were proper b-movie stuff, I thought.
Well deserved, this is really an excellent game. It is good to see the game being awarded in these events because I believe that most game of the year prizes this year will go to Elden Ring or God of War Ragnarok (even without playing yet the hype and the last trailer confirms our expectations for GOW).
Bought it day 1, as Zero Dawn was one of the greatest game I ever played. I'm not saying it doesn't deserve the awards but would definitely place myself on the list of disappointed gamers as they didn't really introduce anything that made the sequel GOTY. BOTW and HZD were 10/10 when released and could have gone either way. Tough to place this above Elden Ring or GoW, or even in the same tier (and I can assure you I am a huge fan of Horizon)
