This is surely a new record? Pre-loads are beginning to roll out for the PS5 version of NBA 2K23, and the game weighs in at a whopping 143GB in size. That means it will fill just under a third of the available space on a brand new console, assuming you haven’t installed an extra SSD yet. The basketball sim is renowned for its enormous install sizes, but it usually tops out around the 100GB mark.
This year’s release does seem especially large to be fair, and is packing a Michael Jordan-themed campaign mode which includes documentary-esque interludes. It also has multiple commentary teams for its era appropriate Franchise mode, meaning the play-by-plays change as you move through the decades.
But even though it’s clearly a massive package overall, 2K Sports is going to have to bring these file sizes down moving forwards. In the here and now, though, this game is an absolute monster, so if you’re planning to play on launch day, make sure you set aside some time to get everything downloaded. By god, you’re going to need it!

Big pass on the casino simulator
People who play 2K and Call of Duty are basically locked in to just playing those games 😂
Good lord, that's nuts.
It almost seems on purpose or they have possibly some of the worst compression techniques in gaming. You can combine the latest Madden with Fifa which are about 50gb each and include all the patches and 2K23 still takes up more space!
One really has to question if the reason this game is so large in terms of space needed is to force players to possibly delete other big live service games off the SSD so that they only play the one they have installed. I mean come on that's outrageous!
How in the f@#$$!?
Hell no.
People that buy into these scam games have literally made the gaming space worse
@BeerIsAwesome There’s quite a lot of video and commentary which will take up a ton of space, but yeah, it’s mental.
This is pure laziness by the devs. With Ps5's Kraken compression tech and the speed of SSD's there's no excuse why they couldn't get this game to be a much smaller size.
Why are these so big? I was really hoping this one would be smaller.
I don’t see them really bringing it down in the future. It doesn’t effect their sales, so, they don’t care. They don’t care if you have room for other games.
@BeerIsAwesome the city surely takes up a ton of space. But I'm pretty sure issues with compression plays a bigger role.
@marnelljm the entire game is or your just repeating something you heard once?
Just...how? I fail to understand how TLoU: Part 2 is 84GB, H:FW is 89GB, and RDR2 is 111GB while this, which takes place in an indoor arena, is sitting at 143GB.
@marnelljm 100% mate... no chance
better play Lakers vs Celtics on PC, I think it was a single density floppy back then... oh how I loved that game. I remember using the numpad on the keyboard to control the players and sending off the ball with the 0/ins key...
Gotta fit in all those advertisements & microtransactions somehow, right 2K/Take Two? Just remember...this is the initial size, wait for the patches & updates!!😋😂😱
VC ... microtransactions....no rookie difficulty.....VC...... etc..
@BeerIsAwesome there is no comparable level of content between NBA2K vs FIFA or Madden from EA. Obviously you havent played NBA2K. FIFA is empty compared to level of details and extra stuff in Franchise mode, Myplayer vs equivalent in FIFA.
The game is as bloated as American sports are in general. What's more it reflects how intrinsic advertising is within American sport. I try to watch Baseball or American Rugby but the intrusive nature of the advertising where even the commentators are obliged to do it is extremely off-putting. Its like the sport is just a vehicle for the ads.
Not sure what people are getting so annoyed about with regards to this, if you don't like the game or don't think the install size is worthy, don't buy. Plain and simple. No reason for the snobbery.
@thebizniznizbiz it's a comment thread where people post opinions. Wouldn't be much of a point to a comment thread if people didn't use it to say something.
Just like you chose to say people shouldn't say things about stuff they don't agree with and ignore it, which is kind of ironic don't you think? 🤔 😁👍
You mean "installation". " Install" is a verb.
And we wonder why Sony did put such a paltry storage size in the ps5 when game sizes are increasing exponentially smdh
@huyi I don't wonder. It keeps costs down.
I don't see many differences compared to PS4 version or 2020 game. Its same graphic engine.
@huyi Well.. it doesn't take an einstein to figure out it was a cost initiative. These ultra fast SSDs are quite expensive - the Series S still rocks a small 500Gb storage to keep it's costing down.
I'm waiting for a PS5 that has at least 1TB internal storage.
Even my old PS4 came with 2TB, which I'll admit is amazing.
My Pro has 1TB and that is the bare minimum I'll accept.
It’s only 49.5GB on the switch!
@Yupyupyup everyone here is wrong for the reasons of the size of the game, except you.
Take-two seems to be content raking in the this franchise brings without having to spend on development. Every year it’s just a glorified patch. This one comes in the form of the much needed adrenaline boosts.
Spaghetti code galore on this game.
@Clankylad exactly. I don’t want to hear that BS that it has a city. It’s like 4 blocks. Elden Ring has worlds. Cyberpunk has night city. …
This and Call of duty will take up over half of your space on the PS5
No thanks
@riceNpea Not ironic at all really, just your take 'I think'. I'm all for opinions, but spouting negativity about a game you probably have no interest in - doesn't really count as an opinion for me. It's merely spreading negativity for the sake of it 😁👍
@thebizniznizbiz a negative interest is still an interest. I'd rather that than an echo chamber of everyone agreeing on everything 😊
Maybe they can partition modes so people dont have to install the whole thing..
