For many PlayStation fans, president Jim Ryan has become a pantomime villain. Despite working his way up the corporate ladder for decades and playing a major role in the brand’s European dominance, many attribute the firm’s more recent PR failings directly to the CEO – and recent comments on abortion rights in the United States have not helped improve his public image at all.
Despite all of this, it turns out that Ryan may actually have some good ideas. Speaking with Games Industry.biz, indies evangelist Shuhei Yoshida revealed that the president identified the platform holder’s overwhelming focus on AAA titles during 2018 and 2019, and tasked his team to do something about it. This resulted in a round of hires – and Yoshida changing roles – as the company looked to reinvigorate its relationship with indie developers, under Ryan’s directive.
“PlayStation was known for promoting lots of indie developers and indie games,” Yoshida said of the iconic early PS4 days, where the platform holder was the first to promote a selection of indie titles on its E3 stage. “But during 2018 and 2019 the company focused more on the AAA side, and Jim Ryan wanted to change it. He asked the global third-party relations team to come up with a plan to reinvigorate efforts as PlayStation to help indie publishers and indie developers.”
Yoshida would eventually change roles to spearhead the efforts, where he was joined by Double Fine’s Greg Rice, who’d effectively lost his job at the studio following Microsoft’s acquisition. The pair then presented their plans to upper-management to improve PlayStation’s standing among indies, and ultimately got the support from the company to execute their plans.
One thing that Yoshida and his team immediately implemented was the ability to curate the best content and showcase it to consumers. “There are so many indie games coming to PlayStation,” Yoshida observed, “that we needed to show consumers which games they needed to be looking at. Also, when developers make great games, we can make sure they’re being promoted.”
We’ve seen many examples of this on the PS Blog in recent years, where Sony will have regular “indie afternoons” dedicated to promoting the biggest and best content. We’d also argue that the platform holder has done a much better job in recent times of taste making the top content, with titles like Sifu and Stray becoming extremely popular this year alone – all thanks to targeted marketing from Yoshida’s team.
There’s still a long way to go, though. Yoshida admits that the company is still working to improve its tools to streamline the submission process, and ensure that all games are advertised adequately – including those not necessarily hand-picked by the manufacturer. With strong competition from both Nintendo and Microsoft, we’d argue that PlayStation is no longer the best place to play indies – but things have definitely improved from where they were at the tail-end of the PS4 generation, and we hope that Sony can continue to make strides to improve its standing in this all-important space.

Indies are mostly where it's at anyway, given the current AAA climate that is very hit-or-miss. PlayStation promoting AND backing indie titles should give more developers the chance to realize their dream project.
Really Sammy? You framed his comments about abortion rights like that when he said we should respect each other's opinions? Each other's as in both opinions... to try and bridge the ever widening gap... that was bad?
Come on man.
Well done Jim. Currently playing Kena and its the most enjoyment i have had out of my PS5 in a while
I do think I’ve noticed a bit of a return to form for indies being more emphasized in the PlayStation gaming ecosystem in recent years. It’s good to see, because I believe indie developers are the lifeline of innovation and diverse game output.
@Uncharted2007 I'm just trying to provide context as to why people think Jim Ryan is a bad CEO for PlayStation. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion on his leadership, but I see a LOT of people — on this site and others — suggesting he's a terrible leader for the company.
It's interesting, then, that he insisted on the recent improvements we've seen to PlayStation's relationship with indies.
wait, so we cant comment on jkrowling, question articles, but abortion stances can be? seems again using divisive topics for more comments.
they need to focus on indies or risk losing too many to GP
I wish they would reinvigorate interest in The Legend of Dragoon instead, am I right, boys?
Sorry, but until they remove the censorship policy and promote more Japanese content I’ll not like anybody in the upper echelons of Sony management. Their globalisation strategy has led to the complete destruction of PlayStation as we knew it.
Well how about giving them an actual spotlight in the Store Frontpage like Nintendo/Xbox does (and not only for big Ad money)? Actual Indie Showcases via Stream like Nintendo and Xbox does and not only via Twitter posts? Launching them Day1 on PS+ Extra since its proven to be very successful for Indies on Gamepass? Sorry, but I cant really take Sonys effort towards Indies serious atm
If it means more games like KENA, all for it.
But I did not pay for a PS5 and 4KTV to play Indies. These days whatever is on PC GamePass are the Indies I check out.
@get2sammyb I don't think he's been a good leader for Playstation because of the silent treatment. We used to get a better idea of what was coming down the pipe, then as soon as he took office, they stopped communicating to the user base almost entirely. Communication is key in all aspects of life, including business. He seems to have forgotten that.
Best game of last gen was an indie: Transistor.
Best game of this gen so far for me is Disco Elysium
@Uncharted2007 you make a great point and that’s one of the things I like about Phil Spencer and the Xbox team, I swear there is news every other day coming from them. Let’s hope Sony change there communication strategy around.
Nope. Lying @get2sammyb is at it again.
Clearly a PlayStation/Jim Ryan fanboy who never writes any critical or balanced articles.
We live in a literal narrative, a narrative needs a bad guy, and the internet has decided that bad guy is Jim Ryan.
Vis-à-vis, concordantly, Jim Ryan = bad.
😁
On a serious and far, far less sarcastic note, if this is why I have Stray, Kena and Salt and Sacrifice on my dashboard then nice one Jim.
Maybe just leave the public speaking to others 🤐😂
Edit: Was genuinely joking with that first part 😬
The store needs a redesign for better discoverability, "Press X for Trophies" type games overflowing the store is still a major problem.
I think Jim Ryan is a doofus, but I'll never deny that he's done some things during his tenure that I respect. I guess I'll add this to the small list.
Need to put some focus on JRPGs
@mrtennis1990 Xbox hasn’t release a first party game all year though. I like that Jim Ryan quite all the time and letting the games do the talking for him.
Wow, why link that article after the site spent so much time trying to bury and mod all comments on it? Though that one time is the only time I've sympathized with Jim and he seemed actually human. Much as I dislike his leadership, he didn't deserve that mutiny from his own company for that at all. That one and only time, I'm in his corner. The cats will always be a meme though. I love it, but it's a meme.
I'm surprised to hear that Jim actually pushed on indies. He definitely has given all appearances of being the main force of AAA-AAA-AAA mania. So he's not completely clueless after all. Although, you have to watch with this coming from Shu, since Japanese polite culture would encourage saying this even if there's more to the story. Shu presents it as he got a major demotion and got sidelined as part of a great vision of improving indies on PS as the vision of Jim the Great.....something tells me there's definitely more to this that's not as glowing on Jim's part as he says. Jim's still the spearhead of globalizing and losing PS's actual identity to become more or less a blue Xbox (I say that as an Xb fan, but I liked that both consoles had unique identities rather than both being PC clones.) It's profitable for reasons we all know, but breaking a brand identity for in-the-moment profits is questionable.
And the ongoing statements from himself and the company PR over ABK keeps looking more and more pathetic, as they mostly claim that their OWN business strategy is suddenly the most evil thing ever. Every time they speak they highlight all their own questionable activity over decades in an overzealous attempt to pretend they're a victim on the sidelines, in the same sentence as reminding everyone they've been bribing special treatment of the very title in question for decades. Maybe he recognized the value of indies, but he's still going in the wrong direction on too much, the indies thing seems like an exception of clarity rather than the rule.
@Uncharted2007 @mrtennis1990 I've felt that Jim keeps looking over his shoulder to see what Nintendo is doing and copying their homework. From pricing to strategy to communication. Nintendo infamously hides everything, and nobody really knows what they're doing (unless Miyamoto leaks it as he used to be prone to do ), and then drops everything as a secret out of nowhere. And are a lot less leaky than the rest of the industry. I think Jim saw it works for Nintendo and copied the whole silence routine. It's frustrating with Nintendo but somehow it works. For PS, it's just such a different feel from the very open information stream that's always been part of it it feels completely wrong. PS started as the anti-Nintendo.
@4kgk2 There will be droughts on PS5 on years XB has major releases though. Remember late PS4 before it's phoenix rebirth as lite-PS5. It's kind of disingenuous to look at a one year snapshot. If by the end of the gen XS is characterized by endless WiiU sized droughts then yeah, that'll be true. But if it's just unevenly paced and backloaded, while PS5 is just more evenly spread, or even frontloaded or book-ended, it's not really a fair take. It'll be hard to say for years.
Good, Nintendo and Xbox are vastly outpacing Playstation when it comes to indies so if they fix that it’s a step in the right direction.
Sony really needs to do better with their indies after that controversy about their lack of support for the smaller indie devs. I appreciate Shuhei Yoshida's support but they need to do better and make the devs feel more welcomed. Jim Ryan's words aren't enough and we need to see more from Sony
So you're saying Jim Ryan is to blame for there being no AAA PS5 games and the store being overrun by indie jumping turd games. /s
@Uncharted2007 Yeah, that comment about respecting other's opinions was definitely Ryan's most heinous act of pure evil. Good thing we have great journalists to keep reminding everyone of that reprehensible utterance. Never forget
@IonMagi Really? Every state of play has been criticized till date because of the overwhelming focus on indie games, something that shu mentioned in this chat . Also , didn't the PlayStation storefront became more optimised last year to feature day 1 releases more prominently? I swear chumps like you only comment negative points 24*7 just to attract attention. Be better ffs.
Sony just doesn't need to do better with securing indies, they need to be smarter about how they might drop day and date releases on ps plus extra/premium. They are one of the main reasons gamepass has such a buzz and a constant place in games journalism chatter. I bet they saw a big uptick in subscriptions for stray. Why not do that more regularly?
Would’ve been cool to see PlayStation develop a AA sector with studios similar to Pixelopus.
@jimbouk Well thats why they should to special Indie Only Streams like Indie Directs for Nintendo and ID@Xbox for MS lol. And no, it didnt. Because the Playstation Store got spammed with those 2€ "Press X for Platinum Trophy" Games Sony set the order to "Best selling Games first" instead of "Newest first" (instead of regulating these Games haha) So now Indie Games have even less visibility on the Store. I swear Fanboys like you dont even now how the Store looks like haha
@Shepherd_Tallon by that logic, seems like the reports we read about Putin is a narrative drawn up by the West and which has decided that Putin is bad. Come on bud...
Not trying to be political here but it was just an example that if bad decisions are made, it's just a fact that bad decisions has been made. And Jim Ryan has made a lot of poor decisions that negatively impact us, the end user. From price hikes, foray into live service games (still on the fence as to how this goes) and not forgetting the amount of times he has had diarrhea of the mouth when communicating to the fan-/customerbase
Can say with certainty that I will personally not look back fondly at his leadership of the brand
@IonMagi There is a dedicated section for Indies specifically, so visibility has always been there, also those trophy spam games appeared only recently and have since been removed so day 1 game releases still feature, I checked it a couple of days ago when Various Daylife was released. I think you need to check the storefront again buddy.
#sackjimryan - maintains the many
@jimbouk Thats why I wrote "Store Frontpage" instead of "hidden away where nobody looks". And no haha, just in the last 2 days multiple more released. Look at new Gems like "Stroke the Cat", "Stroke the Dog" and "Jumping Ice Cream". Just sort the New Games sections to show newest first
absolutely can’t stand this guy no matter what he does
This is the same Jimbob who basically shuttered support for indies, isn't it?
@xDD90x there's a difference between respecting other's opinions and tolerating hate.
@jimbouk the garbageware has not been removed. They just changed the sorting from newest release to top selling. There are still legit indie games that get lost under the garbageware.
@riceNpea Transistor wasn't even the best indie, let alone all around game. Better than Hades? You should take 5 minutes this evening to think about what you said here today. For shame!
He is acutely aware of the financial side of Indies and of course the PR and Rhetoric that Sony themselves were having to answer to. Indies can be 'goldmines' for their Platform - low overheads, small budget games made by very small teams, even by 1 person in their bedroom - sold through Sony's Online Store - no Physical release so they get 'maximum' revenue from these. Not only are they the retailer, they could be the Publisher too. Its a win/win for Sony as they get good PR for having 'independent' games on their platform and a lot of money goes to Sony for every Sale. They are likely to be very 'cheap' investments from Sony, especially if they are offering to publish 'exclusively' compared to a big AAA studio employing hundreds with much bigger overheads and their own Publishing rights...
@Intr1n5ic I preferred it. I fell in love with Transistor, its story, characters and mostly it's soundtrack. Hades was great but it's not the short, self-contained story Transistor was. For me Transistor ephemeral existence loves longer in the memory that the endless runs I had to do to progress in Hades. Thars not to take anything away from it, I just preferred that Transistor, like life, has an ending that's closer than you think and bittersweet when it happens. I put over 100 hours in Hades and it's still not finished.
Nah. I rarely like indies. They're just modernized retro games.
@riceNpea Makes sense, Transistor was a great game for sure, just not my favourite. I don't think Supergiant has put a foot wrong though to be honest, I love everything they've made.
Best idea I've seen out of this jackass since he took over.
@get2sammyb
The press didn’t help that feeling with misreporting, for example, on ‘we believe in generation’ butchered quotes, or Road to PS5 complete messed up reports. Or making a drama even of the absence of demagogic communication as if it’s a big deal for a gaming console.
With all due respect.
@Uncharted2007
The Gaming industry (meaning the press covering) was outraged because he talked about cats and dogs. I’m not even joking.
sony doesn't have much of a choice but to support indies as much as possible. after all, there are sometimes 3+month droghts in between heavy-hitter AAA releases and they need to fill the void. in many cases, indie games are surpassing AAA experiences in some areas (writing and creativity, etc) so people should take notice and get over the unjust stigma that the indie scene sometimes receives.
How about instead of indies you invest on modest budget AA games?
You know, unlike what you did by refusing Wild Arms 6 pitches from the series creator and then see it explode on kickstarter.
I don't think Jim Ryan does a bad job, where the problem is lies in the communication department of PlayStation.
Look at Phil, doesn't know how to make a game and most released on his watch is garbage but he gets a positive rap because he smiles and talks a lot (often out of his a$$ but you get my point).
PlayStation has too much class to go for that but their communication department needs a refresh. Hermen Hulst is a godsend as a leader for the studios as he knows how to make games and it shows in his leadership.
@Tielo To a certain extent, I think Jim Ryan does a bad job because he is (or should be) the communication department of PlayStation.
Phil Spencer is a gamer & engages with the XBox community a lot while Ryan seems to sit there and make, at best, contradictory statements every once in a while ("we have no need for Indies with our AAA catalogue" becomes "Come to Playstation, Indies! Our catalogue is rather bare...")
The days of Layden, House, Tretton et al are long lamented by the PS fans as they were eager to keep engaged, communicated, showcased games and had enthusiasm for the platform. This current shoddy line up is a shadow of its former self.
Personally I'd like some more focus on AA games as well, you know the mid-tier games like Surge, Elex, Code Vein etc.
Let me give him a hint: I bought a PS5 to play AAA games.
Just going to Copy-and-Paste my last comment on this 'PS Hates Indies" BS here because I'm sick of retyping the same thing every time.
Whenever Sony does a State of Play or PlayStation Showcase (Not with the last 2 however), the most common complaint I see in these Comment Sections is "They showed too many Indies & AA Games", and let's not forget how much flack Sony got during the first 3 years of the PS4's lifecycle for how heavily they relied and supported Indies, but I guess people have selective memories and forgot the barrage of 'IndieStation' hate comments that were made.
So we love Indies and then we hate Indies depending on which one benefits everyone's dumba$$ narrative of the week, good to know.
