Good ol’ MotorStorm: Pacific Rift: you wouldn’t believe it’s nearing its 15th (!!!) anniversary based on this updated version for PC emulator RPCS3. While the rather static art direction is a tell-tale sign of its age, the arcade racer more than holds up running at 60 frames-per-second in 4K – in fact, it’s left us itching to dive back in.
There are caveats, of course – the original CELL processor is notoriously difficult to emulate, after all. Split-screen is rocky, for example, with shadows misbehaving and 30fps strongly recommended. However, the game’s clearly still playable: the single player footage in particular looks like top fun, and it’s a testament to the PS3 emulation community for continuing to march forward.

Look at what some passionate Fans can do. Meanwhile Sony still claim that PS3 Emulation is too much work on PS5 lol
@IonMagi I'm not going to defend Sony here because I do generally agree with you BUT there is a difference between a hobbyist project like this and something that needs to be QA tested and shipped to millions of players around the world.
Again, I agree, Sony should do more — but it's not a direct comparison really.
Just shows how difficult it is to emulate the cell architecture. Pretty much everything else is doable, but PS3 still has major problems.
@get2sammyb Sure, but a company as big as SIE surely would have enough capable Devs for this and they also have access to Source Codes and everything . If they would want to obviously
Those Sony cowards need need NEED to bring this and Apocalypse to PS4/5.
Apocalypse is one of the most epic games every made and it's the most mindboggling decision to not continue on that and eventually close Evolution. Incredible talent lost.
Really thought for a second they’d added it to pS plus.
Gutted
@IonMagi it’s gotta be coming soon! 🙏🏻
@Stocksy yeah me too!! Please release on Christmas Day 🙏🏻
4K ?!?
60FPS ??!?
”On PC”
Of course 😂
@get2sammyb "shipped to millions of players around the world."
You mean physically cause I'm positive everything would be digital if they were to make a much needed PS3 emulator. Streaming games is 🤮
Is still embarrassing that 1-2 people in their basement, pooping in a bucket in the corner can get PS3 games running at 4K 60fps (on most likely weaker hardware than PS5) while a multi billion dollar corporation with thousands of developers can't figure it out.
@Luigia Doubt it, they arent even working on adding more new PS2 Games to the Classics
@Juanalf Except Sony have to decide whether the cost of doing it is worth it. It's not the case of them not figuring out.
I’d love to see MotorStorm Apocalypse get a remaster. I loved that game
solve the issue - a NEW motorstorm.
we dont need every old game recycled, just to see it a little shinier. (as much as i loved the original)
@stvevan With Evolution closed down and subsequently sold off to Codemasters, there's little chance of a new one any time soon.
@IonMagi @get2sammyb
I think that without the specs of the PC that was running this, it's all a bit of a moot point.
Not sure of how a custom Unix variant is at emulating in the same way as a Windows box, but the sheer grunt of trying to emulate the Cell processor and its SPE co-processors is probably a push too far even for the PS5.
Either way, it's a bit sad that the Motorstorm series is still the pinnacle of Playstation arcade racers even 15 years on. So glad I've still got a working PS3, working controllers and the original discs...
@sanderson72 It's running on a AMD Ryzen 9 5950X.
This gives me the motivation to get my A01 PS3 fixed.. it died while playing Uncharted 3, forcing me to purchase the trilogy on PS4 to finish my playthrough... would've been nice if I could've just put that PS3 disc into my PS4 instead even with the 720p 30fps limitations. I also miss playing RDR, Infamous, The Darkness, and many more gems stuck on that console
@get2sammyb but let's consider Sony's budget and this project's budget too! We all know Sony could and should do more with emulation, they will probably get there...but when?
Sony need to port the Motorstorm games and Warhawk from PS3 to PS5.
Pacific Rift is my favorite racing game; I still play it and Apocalypse every once in a while. For PS3 games, I would honestly prefer remastered collections on PS5 over emulation, like Sony did for PS2 on PS3. Resistance, Killzone, Motorstorm, Ratchet, and Infamous—that's all I want from PS first party. And if they would bring over those PS2 collections and RDR, GTA4, MGS4 from 3rd-party, my wishlist would be fulfilled.
Pacific Rift is the honestly the best arcade racer I've ever played. Still find it unbelievable that Sony let such a talented team go.
DF did a good one on this.
Motorstorm games looked pretty good even on the pretty rough PS3 hardware.
@IonMagi It too much work for very little return. Sony wants to be able to charge people again for the same game they already own. No more "This is for the player".
It's kind wild that a modder can do a good jobs than multibillions corporations, I remember back then when games developers usually take talented individual from modding community to work at their company.
Maybe the reason most AAA gaming is in a mess right now because nowadays company take it's employee from twitter instead? That's explain all the blue hair freaks on nearly all the devs studio photo, heh.
@ryanburnsred ps3 was their most revolutionary console (ok, with the exception of ps1). 2, 4 and 5, in my view were/are iterative (which, fine). PS3 is my most beloved PS and yet, yet, I still hate that DS3 with passion. I packed my two ps3s just to never touch those crapiest of the crap controllers.
Dudes who think that Sony could make an effective PS3 emulator for PS5 are serious Sony fans. They also know jacksh* about it.
Dudes, IF they could and it was easy, they would need to do an emulator and then specific wrappers for each group of games and it would still run like dogsh*. Stop deluding yourselves, PS5 is not THAT powerful.
PS6 tho will probably be able to do it.
sony could emulate ps3 games the reason why they dont is money. Each game has to be tailored to work properly individually and sony are all about money now so they just dont see the return on investment doing it this way
Apart from Guitar Hero, the other reason I keep a PS3 running is to play Motorstorm. The first title and pacific rift, are games that stand the test of time and still offer some of the best arcade racing you can play on any system.
To be honest, both games still hold their own at 720/30 on a decent 4k upsacling tv. Presentation in the first game in particular is still a stunning example of how to present a AAA title, which still beats most examples on the current platforms.
My intrest is piqued though, im gonna have to put it the pc emulator and check out the new patch... 👏
@AdamNovice At least someone is thinking straight!
In order to invest the time in such a project, there needs to be a pay off. Enabling people to play upscaled versions of old titles is just simply robbing yourself of sales of current gen titles, its buisness suicide.
You could argue that it would attract more demand, but when you can sell every unit you can produce many times over, thats no justification for such an open ended project.
The Motorstorm series proved how powerful the PS3 tech was, especially in the right hands. It's really about time Sony brought this to PS5. Imagine, Unreal 5 engine could really show its muscle with a reboot of the series.
Fantastic series
@get2sammyb Bit more grunty than a PS5 then...
@IonMagi
One: This requires a beefy PC just to run
Two: The vast majority of games on this emulator are either super buggy or don't even load due to various issues
Three: This project has been many years in the work and they still have a very long way to go.
Four: The PS5 architecture doesn't lend itself to PS3 emulation due to the PS3 cell architecture.
Five: Sony are not Microsoft they don't have the resources or budget that Microsoft has to just throw around money for fully compatible emulation
Six: Before you say the PS2 and PS3 had compatibility that was because they were using very similar system architecture and also were more expensive because of the compatibility especially PS3.
Seven: If full backwards compatibility was a thing only a very small percentage of players would even use it lets face it.
Eight: And; No, the source code is actually lost for many of these PS3 games. Most developers back then were not exactly well known for preserving source codes. Many many remasters of games have ran into that very issue.
Bring back motorstorm for goodness sake Sony!!!
I recall selling my bundled copy of Motorstorm back in the day because it was such an awful racer. Regardless, this is just another notch against Sony in their quest to leave PS3 games trapped on that console.
@IonMagi while the lack of new PS2 games sucks, it's not the same for PS3 titles. They're just streaming PS3 games from a server stack, and MotorStorm was on PS Now before. Look at the Sly games - on PS Now, was missing on the Plus relaunch, got added back later.
Sorry to say(because i love SONY/PlayStation) but things like this make SONY look STUPID really :-/ When they say they can't bring PS3(& more PS2/1) games to PS5 or PSN it's just them being LAZY :-/ Oh well. I have discovered MAME etc et so I am HAPPY
Forget the talk about emulation which seems to be forefront but what about the fact the developer ditched this amazing series for a online only serious racer. Rubbish, motorstorm was the last true over the top arcade racer with a twist. Miss it dearly
A new Motorstorm would make me happy beyond words.
@TheDudeElDuderino My youngest brother loved it he played BF4 on PC with a DS3. 🤣
I loved the controller myself it would be awsome to get a smalle size controller for kids. But im totally in loved with the PS5 controller.
nintendo has made old 64 games for the switch so why cant sony do the same i would love my favourite ps3 games upgraded to ps4/5 because lots of people underrate the ps3 when its got some of the best games
