Nintendo’s not getting all the fun! Sony has announced a surprise State of Play livestream for today, 13th September. The broadcast will begin at 3PM PT / 11PM BST, and promises approximately 20 minutes of reveals, including “fresh gameplay footage from 10 games coming to PS5, PS4, and PSVR2”.
A PS Blog post explains: “With Tokyo Game Show just around the corner, it’s almost time to celebrate the amazing creative contributions of the Japanese game development community. And it’s also a perfect time to kick off another State of Play. For tomorrow’s show, we’ll have some great updates from our amazing Japanese partners, along with a few other surprises from developers all around the world.”
Many had been anticipating a PS Showcase in September, as it’s been over a year now since the last full-scale presentation from PlayStation. Of course, this announcement doesn’t necessarily rule that out – there’s no mention of any potential first-party announcements in this State of Play, for example. Still, while we wait for more information on that front, it’ll be interesting to see what tomorrow’s livestream brings.
Amusingly, unlike Nintendo UK, the official PlayStation UK account has confirmed that it’ll be broadcasting the State of Play live – it won’t be observing “this period of national mourning”, apparently. What are you hoping to see? As always, let us know in the comments section below.

Direct & State of Play. I guess we get E3 2022 in September this year! Love it!
Nintendo Direct and a PS SoP that is mostly from Japanese devs on the same day? Is this an out of season E3? Well it's a win-win for me that's for sure.
Great day tomorrow! Hopefuly they will show something meaningful!
Both Nintendo and PlayStation fans eating good tomorrow.
What's funny is Sony's presentation may only be 20 minutes versus Nintendo's 40, but that's because you know half of Nintendo's time will be spent showing off games coming to Sony as well 😂
Nintendo and Sony making an average Tuesday into a Hypeday.
I'm so excited to be disappointed again
Hella disappointing we’re only getting a 20 minute State of Play over a showcase, but it’s better than nothing.
Guess on games presented? I'm curious how many of the games are next year vs what you can get by end of this year. Also how many psvr2 games? Will the price be announced?
@BamBamBaklava89 I mean a PS Showcase could still happen, I guess. I think it's looking increasingly unlikely, but this State of Play seems aimed at stuff likely to be on show at TGS, so there could still be a PS Showcase.
I guess it depends what they show tomorrow.
Anything PSVR2 related is more exciting than anything else in gaming.
Did not see this one coming.... and I won't be home to watch it live unfortunately
Adter Ubisoft Forward im looking forward to seeing games with minimal talking again XD
wonder if most will be psvr2 games
Was hoping for a showcase to be honest
Showcase in October!
Bleeerg
Da hell is this.
Showcaseee nowww
I loved the Queen & she was an AMAZING woman & I can't imagine the UK without her now But we can't stop everything everytime something bad happens in the World or we will never get anything done. Anyway glad it's only 24 hours to go because when they announce it a week before normally the Internet starts to make up all these games that never get shown & everyone gets disappointed etc etc Hmm, maybe SONY should just show a State of Play & not tell anyone then Ok just give people 30 minutes notice then
As much as I want to see a big showcase I don't think Sony's 1st party are in a position to show stuff off.
Bend Studio: Way too early.
Guerrilla Games: Maybe an Horizon expansion, 2nd game a bit too soon.
Naughty Dog: TLOU Factions not shown till next year .
Insomniac: Spider-Man 2 gameplay, Wolverine too soon.
Sucker Punch: Ghost of Tsushima 2 is probably a year or so from reveal.
San Diego: MLB 23 too early.
Media Molecule: At most Dreams for PS5 and PSV2.
Firesprite: More Horizon VR and maybe Twisted Metal.
London Studio: PSV2 game
Housemarque: Way too early
Haven: Again too early
Polyphony Digital: At most GT7 for PSVR2
Santa Monica: Nothing to show beyond Ragnarok.
Team Asobi: Maybe new Astro VR game.
Pixel Opus: Could be time for new game.
Bluepoint Games: Unless there doing another remake, I think it's too soon for them.
Putting all that together suggests if Sony wanted to do a big 1st party showcase they might struggle for content so they would have to lean on 3rd party support like they did last year.
Literally the only thing I care about is PSVR2 having prescription eye-glass sockets. Outside of that I completely trust Sony to make this otherworldly and will happily buy completely blind without a single further piece of information, marketing, or review.
@CapGod yeah not to be ungrateful but they need a showcase now. A state of play after months of silence doesn't really cut it - even if the last State of Play was excellent.
Wonder if tomorrow is FINALLY going to be the time that the rumoured Silent Hill title is finally revealed
Nintendo and Sony directs on the same day 😃 couldn't get any better.
I believe Sony's will be mainly focussed on games from Asia like pragmata, that eve game, valkyrie elysium and eternights.
I still believe playstation will have a main showcase in October, ready to show an in depth look at God of war Ragnarok.
Also let's hope tomorrow gives us a little devil inside release date.
@AdamNovice do you work for Sony studios to know how far a long games are?
call of wild for psvr2, surely?
We want a showcase Sony not another trash state of play.
I'm going to guess:
It does seem to be no Playstation Showcase this year, given tomorrow's State of Play we'll likely get an October GoW Ragnarok State of Play and then maybe Sony would tease a 2023 game at the Game Awards.
@4kgk2 Don't need too, just basic educational guesses based on when certain studios released games/how long they take, plus when the marketing cycle is more likely to begin.
That's pretty crazy.
Definitely watching both.
@PlayStationGamer3919 nothing crazy here mate, just business
September 13 is the real E3.
Pft 20 minutes... so no new gameplay video of God of War Ragnarok then huh?
Well... if they're not gonna share at least some news about Bloodborne, since it's mainly about their amazing Japanese partners, then they can take that "State of" and stick it up their "Play", if you pardon my french.
@AdamNovice You forgot Bluepoint.
Keeping my expectations low. I used to wonder with excitement at what awesome new game is going to be shown. Then three years of disappointment occurred nearly ruining me completely on modern gaming.
God of war will have its own state of play down the line closer to the release
@Areus Damn, I knew there was one I was missing. Lol
@PlayStationGamer3919 or good news from both? why does one have to be better.
So no showcase?
@BamBamBaklava89 why is that bad? if it was longer then 20 mins most of it would be filler content with just talking , when its shorter its 99% trailer/game play vs 80% trailer game play / talking about it.
@Elodin helldivers 2 looks likely
How exciting! Tomorrow’s going to have a good amount of gaming news with both the Nintendo Direct and the PlayStation State of Play!
For the State of Play specifically, more updates on any of these games would be incredible:
I’d be happy with anything new on any of those games. If there is by chance any news on games that haven’t been announced yet, it would be a dream come true to see either a new remaster or modern port of Star Ocean: Second Evolution for at least PS4 and Switch, a new Ni No Kuni game, a new Devil May Cry game, or even The Legend of Dragoon coming to PS Plus Premium. I’m not expecting any of those, but it would still be pretty cool if by some chance any of those happened.
@AdamNovice Agreed
@BeerIsAwesome talk about an announcement that would break the internet lol
Probably just some of their live service rubbish maybe tlou factions 2
My expectations are low even though the last State of Play was pretty good and was one of my favorite State of Plays so far(and funny enough, one of the best games showcases this year even though it's not THE showcase we're looking for when it comes to PlayStation).
The only ***** i want to know since long time ago, if the PSVR 2 is backward compatible.
excited to see what's in store, especially the part about updates from Japanese partners. count me in for probably 6 JPN developed games and I'm sure the other 4 games from other developers will have something cool too.
I don't care about Nintendo so yeah, more Zelda ports woohoo...great.
let the unrealistic expectations begin!
Hopefully there'll finally be an update on Showa American Story. They did say there'd be so e updates from devs around the world, after all.
Come one people, 20 mins already says this will be a letdown. Here we go again with everyone forgetting the past and thinking somehow Sony is going to magically update everyone on all of the games being mentioned above that they have been completely silent on for a year or more in a little 20 min show.
Temper your hopes, Sony has shown its hand, and it's in favor of the house (their greed), and the house alone.
20 minutes after a year of silence and predatory practices is a slap in the face
20 minutes of things we've already seen most likely. Surprise me Sony!
There really issnt an actual Showcase this year huh? Lol Sony
Temper your expectations. This will probably focus on games we already know about.
@AdamNovice True, probably a decent portion of their 1st party studios don't have anything far enough along to show much, but at some point Sony needs to give us even a vague roadmap of what to expect going forward. We literally know (100% confirmed by Sony or the developer) of 2 non-VR games for sure going forward after God of War Ragnarok, and those are Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine.
Sure, they are all obviously working on stuff and we have an idea of what some are working on, but we still don't have confirmation on what most of them are actually working on. Can't exactly use the excuse that they don't have anything to show though either, as Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine were just CG teaser announcements.
I'm not saying they have to announce what every game is that's in development, but at least some knowledge of what's coming would be nice. Unless they do a 1st party showcase with God of War Ragnarok front and center (we're more likely to get just God of War), then it will be just more silence from Sony. Sony's silence this whole generation is already passed annoying.
@AdamNovice
Some very good points there.
Does make me wonder apart from PSVR2, what will we have for in house big AAA games wise for 2023. Could be a bit quiet for them next year, who knows.
Maybe spider man 2 as it did say 2023 but that could easy get pushed to 2024.
I think the big push will be PSVR2 but if you not into that, it could be a slim year compared to 2022.
00:00 o´clock in germany... see you tomorrow then -_-
@AdamNovice I was thinking very similar to this but few diff opinions. I think guerilla games second game although I doubt will be shown, it could easily be given a teaser it started development early 2018 with strong hiring process end of 2018 with being rumoured to be tactical online shooter with no single player suggest dev time would not be as long.
Housemarque is strange one because they had 4 games in discussion & development including returnal so I don't know if all thoses are just scraped now being they want AAA games now and not maybe AA games we had before from them.
Also think Sony London confirmed it's not working on PSVR2 it's making a new AAA PS5 game, but that would still be miles off regardless.
Wonder if we will get a Stray type announcement about a free first day release to PS Plus Extra? About that time of the month.
@4kgk2 in your first reaction you’re replying to someone telling him if he works for Sony or something to know that kind of stuff. And then in your next reaction you say “We need a Showcase, not a trash State of Play” 👀 I guess you’ve seen it alteady then…
So that’s basically Sony pre TGS stream 🤷🏼♂️
With PSVR2 demo at Tokyo Game Show
Two presentations in one day like a mini E3? Can’t remember this happening before but I like it! Hope they both bring the goods now.
Would it of killed them to do 1pm/4pm/9pm instead? The whole of Europe being screwed over.
Probably to do with Japan I guess.
I will not watch the PlayStation Direct.
I will scoop out the upcoming kids games information once the article is ready.
Show is going to be a disappointment. Pretty sad we're almost halfway through Sept and still haven't gotten a proper PS Showcase. Jim Ryan boy....what a leader!!
@Dezzy70 @KilloWertz If you compare @AdamNovice's analysis of what the studios are up to with with what Jim Ryan has said about live service, PC and mobile for the next few years in shareholder meetings it suggests showing the future may make a load of PS players even more annoyed than they are about the current silence.
For example, Jim Ryan said there would be 3 live service games by the end of March 2023 and 1 of those is MLB The Show 22 (released in April 2022) which leaves 2 releasing at some point in the next 6 months. Then there's another 9 live service games releasing between April 2023 and the end of 2024 (Jim Ryan said 12 live service games by 2025) where this was prior to the Bungie acquisition so the number is possibly even higher.
I wouldn't be surprised if we already know the vast majority of the single player 1st party PS5 releases up to the end of 2024.
@Freakservo MS have two showcases in two days starting tomorrow
Personally I'm just mega hyped for the RGG Summit tomorrow. Let me see that proper Yakuza 8 reveal and I'll be ecstatic.
I'm hoping a Tekken 8 reveal happens.
@Warriooh Bandai Namco supposedly have a mystery stream event this Sunday as part of TGS. Details still to be announced. You might not have to wait much longer, huge emphasis on "might".
@Rob_230
Yeah. I feel like they owe us something already.
@Freakservo Lol no worries!
@OM1993 Bring it on, I didn't know about that.
@Warriooh Honestly nor did I until earlier. Went to check if Bandai Namco's mystery slot for their main showcase on Thursday was still open (which I thought would have been the maybe, possibly Tekken 8 placement) but that's since been filled up by One Piece Odyssey it seems. But then also ended up finding out about this mystery stream too. It's scheduled for 21:00pm (JST timezone) this Sunday so keep your eyes peeled. Source below:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.siliconera.com/bandai-namco-tgs-2022-booth-will-highlight-one-piece-odyssey/amp/
@KaijuKaiser Elden Ring was announced 3 years before launch with a very vague teaser so I could see a similar thing here where it launches in 2025/2026.
Well, I'm all for Sony (pretending to) promote Japanese content again, though I wonder if it's mostly multiplat games plus FF. Not a fan of the shadow drop Direct, I can't stand when Nintendo does it either, but if it's REALLY a J-games focus, I'll take it.
@Dezzy70 The problem with a PSVR2 push is given the economy, low production, competitor's actions, and Sony's current leadership direction, I expect that things going to hit e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e to the point that even as a fan I might not buy it. I'm thinking at least the price of the PS5, maybe more. If it is it'll be little more than a niche halo product for the big spenders and irrelevant to.....pretty much everyone. Of course they'd end up price slashing a year or two later like with PSVR1, but then I'm betting support for it will sink, too, because that's generally the Sony way for products that aren't hits.
Even as someone that wanted to hear that PSVR2 was going to exist to the point I hoped it would have the "box" built into the console, I've kind of lost most hype for it based on that prediction.
Does not matter what they do the children on the internet are going to cry about it ! Same o same o !
@OM1993 And it ended up happening, i am well chuffed.
@Warriooh I just caught up on SoP this morning. That AND Yakuza?!! My God, they had a show. And to think I slept on it 😅
