Many of you will be familiar with the outlandish design of the PS5’s dev kit by now – after all, diagrams that leaked several years ago gave us our very first glimpse of Sony’s successor to the PS4. But this is the first time we’ve been able to get up-close-and-personal with the hefty hardware, courtesy of YouTuber Macho Nacho Productions, who somehow managed to get his hands on a unit.
While the video doesn’t reveal much that we didn’t already know, it’s fascinating to see the format in the flesh like this. There’s a display on the front of the unit which includes important software development kit information, and some thoughtful design flourishes, including “wings”, which allow the console to stand up – or notches for nifty stacking purposes.
As you’d expect, once in operation there are a bunch of developer-focused debug settings, although this unit hasn’t been activated by Sony, and therefore there’s not a lot it can actually do. We really like the way the unit looks, though – it’s huge, just like the retail PS5 unit, but it’s got plenty of character. Do you reckon this should have been the inspiration for the final product’s design?

I much prefer the final design, I thought it looked odd at first but honestly I have warmed up to it, I really like the design.
I remember everyone thought when the dev kit design leaked that it was going to be the actual PS5.
So what's the verdict folks? Which looks better? Dev kit or actual?
First look? Pretty sure I've seen that design before
But perhaps that was via some leaks
edit: Maybe I should read the article before writing a comment lol
Had to glance at my PS5 before commenting and yes, it looks better imo. Then I noticed my PS2 slim which is next to the PS5 and chuckled at the size difference
@mariomaster96 It's obviously not the first time we've seen it, but it's definitely the best look at it to date.
I’ve also seen a silver-er version of this unit that presumably was much earlier in the pipeline than this version.
When first shown I thought this actually was the PS5 design. Personally love this dev kit design, but obviously prefer the commercial build.
I really like the dev kit version & would’ve been quite pleased with that as the actual model. The “v” shape syncs in with the 5 as well.
The actual retail model is okay. I have mine vertically and the “collars” are cool, with the machine glowing & pulsing. I think some purple sleeves & a matching controller will be next on the list (after a SSD!)
I'm hoping the alleged refresh due next year will look better than the current monolith.
Only positive is it looks better than the dev kit but then the PS3 and PS4 look better than the melting slab of lard look.
Looks like a bike stand. This is far worse than the PS5. It's just a better colour.
@Uncharted2007
Actual I would say. I didn't care for the design at first but actually having one in the flesh now has warmed me up to to the look of it.
@PegasusActual93 That seems to be a reaction from many. The PS5's final retail design was unlike anything that's come before and it raised a lot of people's eyebrows. Now, it seems old hat as people have adjusted.
Looks cool but I think the real PS5 looks better under my TV which is what matters at the end of the day.
That said I was always going to buy one no matter what it looked like. It's what's under the hood that counts
@Uncharted2007
I think it looks better than the Series X fridge design, or tower or whatever the hell they were going for with that look.
I still think the PS1 and the PS4 had the best designs. I also kind of have a soft spot for the Xbox 360 design. Though maybe that is more nostalgia then anything.
Milion times prettier than actual "grinning router"
Not a fan of this version. XSX & PS5 are the first consoles standing tall, behind the LGCX 65 TV, only showing the drives. XSX has a drive on the left & the PS5 has one on the left. Perfect
The retail PS5 is so ugly, I wish I could just have one like this, which is also a bit ugly, but less so.
Compared to the Ps3 and 4 dev kits it looks like a pretty polished box of madness. The old ones looked like an old tool box my dad has.
This has shiny bits,go faster spikes, brushed metal trim.
Easy to see why people may have thought it was the actual console.
Also, that youtuber needs blocking. He used "kewl but didn't even pronounce it kewl. Unforgivable.
Go digital version and leave it on a shelf and then guess what?…you don’t need to look at it
@Dpishere I really like it. I know its big but it looks cool and its so silent.
UGLY as ***** . people can’t be serious about this being an actual console look …
@PegasusActual93 the XSX is just a tall symmetrical rectangle , basically just a regular shape that we’re all used to
but this thing is ugly as sin and deformed .
btw , the Original Fat PS3 is a work of art . they should’ve called it Aesthetic Station 3 😍
@nomither6
No other console in history has looked like a plain tall rectangle. It's like Microsoft just gave up trying to come up with a unique design and said "f--k it tall rectangle!" At least the Xbox One had a VCR home entertainment thing going for it so you could at least kind of see what they were going for. They had a good design with the Xbox 360 which looked memorable, not sure why they couldn't do something similar again. Anyway, even consoles with a square or rectangular base has curve, or some angular shapes on top or something. PS4 has an slanted wedge design which works with it's small size. PS1 is rectangular..ish but has a circular top disc tray and the way the vents look on the side looks appealing to me. The PS3 looks like a backyard grill and the PS2 looks like the first draft of a planned superior design. It's very hit or miss with Playstation designs for me. At the end of the day though it's just a thing under my TV that plays games.
Will be interesting to see if we get a PS5 slim in the future. Right now we don't need a PS5 pro but I would welcome more defining titles with standard 60FPS or even 30FPS with better working Ray Tracing on titles like Gran Turismo 7 and not just bound to replays and looking at the cars.
I definitely prefer the look of the PS5 we currently have but it would be great to look at comparisons of other designs they had for maybe the final cut.
I remember seeing a photo of the different prototype controllers they had in the past to make the final design.
I wouldn't mind if it was the final design. I like my tech stuff being symmetrical and the retail PS5 is everything but that. It just looks deformed, sort of molten and clearly unstable to me. I have black covers which helps with not noticing it everytime i look at the telly. It also needs that clunky stand to sit horizontal and even then it's unstable. Plugging cables in or out always relocates the stand too as it's not possible to get it firmly attached. It just barely able to sit in the right angle underneath. Accidentaly move the PS5 a bit and the stand dispositions with it, Ugh.The dev kit looks kind of retro-futuristic, which i like, and looks stable and balanced. And it's grey/black, that's a plus too. ***** that opening cyborg oyster design, i vote for devkit! (I like my PS5 for just about everything else, though...)😊❤
If they made the PS5. In black. Oh the deference it would have looked. But white? Why white? Most people's entertainment area is black. It made no sense to do that.
@Deformedpye they wanted the ps5 to seem like a big evolution or futuristic when in actuality it’s anything but compared to how great the ps4 was
I remember when the design leaked, thought it looked cool and still do.
When the retail was shown I loved it and I'm still happy with it.
That said I'd previously had a weird head spin with the PS4 and bought a white drive cover and controller, even though I used to hate any tech that was white previously.
So oddly eased myself into the idea in advance.😀
@PegasusActual93
I love the PS5 look. Tbh it’s better people have divided opinions than being indifferent. It’s proof of a stylish design.
I think passionate gamers want a machine with stylish design and not something that is dull.
When I first saw SX next to a PS5 in a shop I saw a fat rectangular fire log next to the PS5 and bigger than people pretend. Honest haha
The seller was telling me ‘look how big the PS5 is’. I just said they are different. It’s tall and the other one is fat. That’s the truth.
Edit
I much prefer the standard disc than the digital only one. More curves is great 👍🏻
ps3 is THE best playstation design ever made.
I was intrigued by the dev kit when it was first shown and wouldn't have minded if the launch console was similar. It struck me as slightly 70's though, and not in a good way. Comparatively I thought the launch console was pretty tame when that was finally revealed. I was slightly taken aback by the sheer size of the thing when I unboxed it, but it's a similar footprint to my HiFi pieces and looks correct under my TV with all the rest.
@kenshin4ever I was gonna say the same! My PS5 is sat atop the TV stand flanked by a PS4 and PS3 with a PS2 and original PlayStation underneath, the PS2 is probably my favourite mostly for posterity, but the PS3 is not a lot smaller than the PS5 yet carries itself with much more discretion.
Dev Kit video linked above was taken down sadly.
