Many of you will be familiar with the outlandish design of the PS5’s dev kit by now – after all, diagrams that leaked several years ago gave us our very first glimpse of Sony’s successor to the PS4. But this is the first time we’ve been able to get up-close-and-personal with the hefty hardware, courtesy of YouTuber Macho Nacho Productions, who somehow managed to get his hands on a unit.

While the video doesn’t reveal much that we didn’t already know, it’s fascinating to see the format in the flesh like this. There’s a display on the front of the unit which includes important software development kit information, and some thoughtful design flourishes, including “wings”, which allow the console to stand up – or notches for nifty stacking purposes.

As you’d expect, once in operation there are a bunch of developer-focused debug settings, although this unit hasn’t been activated by Sony, and therefore there’s not a lot it can actually do. We really like the way the unit looks, though – it’s huge, just like the retail PS5 unit, but it’s got plenty of character. Do you reckon this should have been the inspiration for the final product’s design?
