The game's tantalising reveal trailer didn't make it completely obvious, but Team Ninja has confirmed that Rise of the Ronin is an open world action RPG. You'll be running, gliding, and horseback riding across 1863 Japan in a bid to restore order to a restless nation.
"Here in this time of mayhem, you embody a Ronin character, a warrior bound to no master and free to make choices of its own," reads the PlayStation Blog. The veteran developer describes Rise of the Ronin as "the most ambitious and challenging project for Team Ninja studio to date", which certainly adds some spice to proceedings.
Solidifying this point, the studio says that this project has been in the works for seven years, although development sounds like it's been a bit on-and-off in that time, which makes sense. "It was seven years ago when we first began this project. And since then, the development has progressed slowly and freely, much like the spirit of a Ronin. It is with great pleasure to finally bring this title to light," Team Ninja writes.
It also thanks Sony for the support, which perhaps explains why it's a PS5 console exclusive: "We are filled with gratitude on being able to make this announcement with PlayStation who have supported us and this project throughout these many years."
Rise of the Ronin isn't due out until 2024, so we've got plenty of time to dream about its potential. Are you already feeling the hype? Lower your straw hat in the comments section below.

Just by seeing that trailer you can tell it's easily their most ambitious title yet. Hope they manage to pull off the open world but I'm not worried in the slightest
And I love the support between playstation and team ninja. The nioh games are some of my favorite games of all time
Between Ghost of Tsushima, that new Assassin's Creed game set in Japan, and this, fans of realistic historical Japanese settings are eating good on PS5.
This looks fantastic. Curious on the story. My hope would be chose a daimyo to follow and help unite the land through what looks like fantastic gameplay.
Genuinely impressed and excited for this. Was little worried after Stranger of Paradise but Team Ninja are pulling out all the stops for this one. Cant wait!
It looked like they've put some serious time and effort in. Looked amazing! Definitely on the day one list!
From initial impressions I am more excited for Wo Long, but as a huge Team Ninja fan I will be getting both, and my opinion could very easily change. Its a good time to be a fan of their games
This looked incredible. A little sad that it's an exclusive and PS5 only. Won't be able to play it.
Would this have difficulty like their Nioh games or would it be more accessible?
Very curious and excited for this one. 2024 will be a long wait though.
oh sweet i love getting lost to these games i love escapism. really looking forward to this!
Im glad companies like fromsoftware and team ninja are trying open world in their games
This couldn't be any more up my street
This came out of nowhere, and ended up being my third favorite thing they showed. Looks extremely promising.
Started 7 years ago and isn't out for another 2.... maybe time for a little crunch guys ffs
Quite stunning game. It will be a success for sure.
Day 551 BG for certainty definite
@Elodin It's set during the Bakumatsu, no more daimyos here, probably no more Shogun either.
@Athrum ahh later time period. Thanks for the info. This will also be fun. A time period not done much in video games.
More team ninja games is always welcome.and rise of the ronin.a open world action rpg is cool by me.im playing nioh 2 with all the dlcs.and im having fun.nioh 2 is one of the best games ever made.word up son
I already have this game. Its called Ghost of Tsushima.
Looks like it has a lot of promise but I'm curious why Sony are heavily involved with this when they have Ghost of Tsushima (especially with a sequel potentially coming around that timeframe) that scratches that feudal Japan itch.
I'm sure there will be loads of differences between them, I'm just more thinking from the casual pov.
@Ralizah Plus the Yakuza Samurai game that just announced too.
@Jaz007 Maybe. Realism doesn't tend to be what Yakuza games go for.
But you're right, it's in that same wheelhouse, I suppose.
@Ralizah Gotcha missed that part. Well to be fair, the realism in the "AC RPG" titles may be questionable too with how much straight fantasy they've been diving into.
@Jaz007 That's fair. I always thought those games tended to be more realistic, but then, I've never successfully managed to play one for more than an hour.
Happy to hear this was confirmed, but hopefully it won't take like 50+ hours to complete.
