If you've been playing through Red Dead Redemption 2 thanks to its inclusion on PS Plus Extra, and you haven't finished it yet, then you might want to hurry. Rockstar's incredible open world title will be removed from the service tomorrow (that's the 20th September 2022 at the time of writing), and that means Extra subscribers will no longer be able to play it unless you go and actually buy a copy.
We've known that this would be the case since Extra's initial game library was unveiled, but it's certainly worth a quick reminder article.
Any games that leave PS Plus Extra, or PS Plus Premium, are no longer playable through the service — even if you're still subscribed. This rule does not apply to PS Plus Essential, which lets you retain access to your monthly games as long as you add them to your library.

Nah, won't miss it.
Hope RDR2 will get one day an update for PS5/Xbox Series with improved visuals, resolution and 60 FPS.
Ah that’s a shame - I was actually quite early on in a replay of it.
Would put some money behind it if they ever do a PS5 update for it.
A PS5 version would be brilliant. Loved the game and it’s been fun watching my mum replay it while clearly being a lot better with the controller than she was last time.
@PlayStationGamer3919 Yeah, it's not like the PS Plus Essential games where what they give you every month stays on your account.
RDR2 is part of the Extra/Premium sub service. As with Game Pass, games will rotate in and out of it regularly.
Finished 3 chapters, i dont mind waiting , maybe a 60 fps update will happen eventually
I tried getting into this game a few times but it was just way to slow. Think the furthest I got was about 3 hours in and just ended up deleting it everytime.
@ferrarijared19 The first chapter is a bit of a slog but once the world opens up you can ramp up the pace to your own liking. It's never going to fully go at a thousand miles a minute but it definitely picks up if you want it to starting in the second chapter.
@PlayStationGamer3919 Most first party (Sony owned) games won't leave the service. Many third party games will have long term agreements and won't leave the service any time soon. But some especially the AAA third party blockbusters will have shorter deals. These are usually a minimum of 12 months but a few may be shorter. RDR2 joined previously in July 2021 to Nov 2021 but then again from June 2022 to September 2022. So just 3 months this time.
@PlayStationGamer3919 If they're first-party games I'd be surprised if they were removed honestly. And really old games that don't have much demand will probably stay there too.
But the bigger third-party titles will definitely come and go. Platform holders would have to keep paying for the privilege to host them.
Edit: What @themightyant said.
Boah
@PlayStationGamer3919
It works in pretty much the same way as the original PS Now used to work. (Or game pass on Xbox)
You could download the games rather than having to stream but you can only play it as long as it's still on the service.
The list of games constantly gets updated and shuffled around with new games being added and older ones being removed.
Think of it like Netflix but for games. When you download and watch a film on Netflix you don't get to keep it do you?
Edit: meant to say that we are usually given plenty of notice when a game is due to leave the service. It's not like you just wake one morning and it's disappeared with no explanation
@PlayStationGamer3919 I get it's a little confusing. There are 3 tiers.
I realise this sounds worse, but what you have to consider is there are some noticeable benefits. E.g.
@PlayStationGamer3919 I hace no clue how Sony will treat the service, but at least with Xbox, first party games stay there for good (unless they need to delist due to licensing as tends to be the fact with much older Forza games, but that also means the games in question can no longer even be sold anyways.) in the past, I think Sony has indeed also rotated in and out their first party games from the old service PSNow, who knows if they are changing their approach now.
Third party games tend to rotate. Again no clue what Sony is pursuing and we might find over time a pattern, but if they follow Xbox, most titles are added for about 6 months; with some lasting a whole year. Rockstar games tend to be added just for about a month or two, maybe three. Rockstar is VERY conservative with their collaboration with these services.
Edit: seems RDR2 was there 15 months, that’s quite a long window for rockstars usual.
@Shepherd_Tallon I would not be super surprised if they start rotating their first party games. I think they did during PSNow.
@Tomato_Goose
It's rockstar we're talking about, won't happen in the next few years. The bigger the greedier.
@themightyant Correction: RDR2 has not been on there for 15 months. It was on Now from July 2021 to November 2021, and then on Extra from June 2022 to September 2022. So about 9 months.
some sony first party games used to be removed after 90 days when they were on PSNOW
@PlayStationGamer3919 you need to think of it like Netflix, things change. It's no different to gamepass.
These subscriptions are a rental service, you never own anything
Gotta remember to shoot up a town one last time today for fun.
@Milktastrophe Thank you for the correction. That rings a bell, I initially thought it was added around PS++, but I did a quick search and those middle dates didn't pop up. I'll correct it.
At least with PS Plus they generally let you know a couple months in advance when a title is leaving. The end date for Red Dead 2, as well as Red Dead has been known awhile. I made sure to play through Red Dead a couple months ago knowing it’s leaving in October. With Game Pass they give you 2 weeks, which doesn’t allow for planning when it comes to long games.
Amazed I still haven't touched this, considering I enjoyed the original years back.
Just check chapter 6 of this guide if you don't want a negative surprise. It's only a handful of Extra/Premium games leaving and they announce it months in advance. So no biggie.

I wonder if anyone can download and complete the game in that time frame LOL
@PlayStationGamer3919 yes, that is how it works, it's nothing like plus essential where you keep it as part of the price you pay, like someone else said it's a rental service, treat it like good old blockbuster or something
I really tried to get into RDR2. Got through the first part (there were like 6 chapters or parts to it maybe?) and then some. But, it didn’t click. I can acknowledge that the game looked fantastic and definitely could see the appeal for others. But for me, it wasn’t worth spending more time on after that long.
I'm playing rdr2 now and it's 24 hours later....is it really leaving
@Tharsman Because Rockstar abandoned all their IP in favor of GTA online.
That's one of the reasons i hate sub services like this,much prefer buying my games.
@Gamer_Guy wow you want attention like Kim Kardashian
@ferrarijared19 God of war is too
I own it on disc so I’m cool with it leaving 🤷♂️
I already own the game on disc, but interesting to hear.
