Konami went and did it: the publisher has announced Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars for multiple platforms including PS4.
This pair of beloved JRPGs is making its return in a collection that enhances the visuals and adds a few mod-cons you'd expect. Backgrounds will be HD resolution, new visual and sound effects have been added, and battle special effects will also appear in high-def. Additionally, the games will make use of autosaves, battle fast-forward, and a conversation log so you can keep track of things.
These two games first appeared on PS1 in the late 90s, and are very highly regarded classics. Now they'll make a grand return on modern machines at some point next year. If you're curious to see more, IGN has an exclusive gameplay video:

Very excited for this. I got the first one way back when it was released for about 25 euros used lol seeing the prices today seems like a bargain. I really enjoy the series, even though I thought (even back in the day) that the concept of silent main characters is way outdated. I really couldn't connect with the MC in any Suikoden game but the story and world building was great.
I liked that the games followed stories set in the same world / continuity. For some reason I don't have the third game. I think there was no PAL version.
The visuals in the remaster look very good.
Does this mean that original PlayStation copies will FINALLY drop in price? I've wanted them for ages but they're ridiculously expensive.
WOW So happy to wake upto this news this morning, having been a massive fan back in the ps1 days. Will defo be picking this up
OH MY GOD. FINALLY!
Suikoden 2 is one of the greatest jrpgs of all time. my wallet is bleeding with all these game announcements :,(
I'm definitely up for this. Never played suidoken back in the day, but always remember seeing it at the local blockbuster. And knowing more about it now I know that it would have been my type of game. Day 1 for me
Great news! I'm pumped to finally get into Suikoden on PlayStation for the first time, though I'm very late to the party. The earlier titles are quite expensive nowadays.
Celebration time 🎉 I still have my original copies but there getting into there mid 20s and probably disc rotting as I write this.
I don't biy games day one but am buying this even if it should be offered as part of PS+ Premium
Was NOT expecting this. As long as it runs fine on Switch will probably get it there, handheld and smaller screen makes retro look far better than blown up on large 4K screens imo.
@themightyant my thoughts exactly. It'd probably look decent on Steam deck
@naruball Ditto. MY thoughts exactly. But missed my first Deck email, had to rejoin the queue, waiting for the next one apparently October-ish...
Would've thought Suikoden & Suikoden 2 would've been obvious candidates for the "ps classics" program on Deluxe/Premium instead of the disappointing line-up so far...
Going to take some getting used to with these new visuals! Fingers crossed they stay true to their originals style, but looking the part so far!🤞👍
Hopefully they've kept the "bonus" crossover from pt1 to pt.2 secret quest if you recruited all 108 characters too!
Best news this year.
I would have been content with the originals and just trophy support, but this is just gravy.
Super excited.
As someone who's never played Suikoden, is it similar to like the old school FF games before VII?
@belmont
Yeah third game was never released in Europe for some reason.
It is fantastic too. 4 and 5 were meh 😒
Oh my god this is brilliant. Love the games, very much excited for this.
Great news, two of my favourite JRPG's. And while not as good, I would like all the PS2 games as well please.
@Amusei yes it is similar but very different also. The first 3 Suikodens are class old school rpgs with a lot of their own mechanics that stand them apart from the final fantasy’s. In suikoden 2 you can import your hero from suikoden 1 to join your army which was a cool touch as none of the characters or story follow on with each other.
I’m so excited for this. Bought them on my Vita when it was announced the store was closing but never got round to them. And it’s on Playstation, Switch and Xbox too. Thats how you do it 👌
I never played them. Now I certainly will.
I was hoping they would go on to the PS+ Premium route along with Arc the Lad as I bought them all digitally on the PS3, but definitely buzzing for this too. Konami, do Vandal Hearts I and II next you cowards!
I wonder if they'll also fix certain things like the gate skip in Suikoden II. Anyway, definitely getting this.
@Kunfoostu Oh ok sounds cool, thanks! Probably will pick them up at some point to scratch that old school rpg itch.
Would somebody wake me and tell me this isn't a joke? A Suikoden Remaster? Just can't believe it. I've been waiting years for a remaster or sequel to the franchise.
Why is it coming to PS4? The PS5 will never reach its full potential. Waaaaah.
Now this has made my morning!!!! PC version for me! I love Suikoden since I first played it when I was 15. I have tattoos of the Soul Eater, Ressurection and Black Sword runes.
Man, I was really hoping to hear about Metal Gear remakes. Fan of Suikoden 2, will pick up for those trophies babybaby
@Amusei Yep. A lot less crazy and grounded but very very good. No one acts till you finish selecting will all 6 members in the party. Nice to seem em attack the enemy simultaneously.
I’m actually surprised the Suikoden series actually is popular in Japan and the West. From what I understand it’s based on a Chinese novel. Normally things Chinese are not really popular with Japan or the West given the century of tensions with China.
I planned to play them on PS3 via PS1 classics back in the day, but never could. Maybe this time will happen!!
@Amusei Though you won't always have total freedom in your party make up,certain family members you recruit,(or others who are buddies etc ),can do team attacks, very handy for bosses!
Also depending on your success recruiting characters,(sometimes you'll only have limited chances to find them),you'll see changes in your eventual HQ.
Was a latecomer to FF only starting on ps1,but if it hadn't been for Suikoden I wouldn't have played FF7 to death including chocobo breeding, finding Knights of the Round materia & taking on the dreaded Emerald & Ruby Weapons that made Sephiroth look almost easy!!😱😅
You mean I went on a shopping spree in the ps3 store for nothing . Was hoping they'd bring it to premium so I could just get it on PS5 for free but guess Ill have to double dip
Super excited to pick up this collection! Great to see Konami working on video games again!
Day one purchase for me. Suikoden was my favorite RPG on the PS One, but I will be getting this on the Switch or Xbox. I am not supporting Sony anymore till they get their head out of their ass.
@AstraeaV Ooh ok cool, sounds interesting.
The Young Master will be most pleased
call me surrpised... konami actually put a decent effort into this project. the background art is pretty good! not a huge fan of the character art, but overall its clear that more work was put into this than say the chrono cross remaster
Will definitely buy it when discounted.
This and 100 heros on gamepass
