Branding around Ultimate Editions of games has always been a little weird, but it's never funnier when a publisher hands itself a Game of the Year Edition for something that didn't exactly set the world on fire. Enter Ubisoft with a Far Cry 6 Game of the Year Upgrade Pass that's just been spotted on the backend of the Microsoft Store. Yes, the Game of the Year for 2021 we all loved: Far Cry 6...?
To be fair, the game itself was a good one, but it came nowhere close to our top 10. Apparently, it did actually win Game of the Year at two outlets, though! Those being the tech, cars, and lifestyle publication EFTM, and also BGR. That's surely enough justification to call your title Game of the Year, right?
Of course, this is just a meaningless marketing phrase designed to reignite interest in the game, but what's interesting is the upgrade pass does seem to tease some new content. The image says you'll get the season pass — which contains three pieces of DLC — the Ultimate Pack, but then also an "expansion". The fact this is listed separately from the season pass that already exists suggests there's something else on the way for Far Cry 6.
The final chunk of announced post-launch content released all the way back in February, so it's been quite some time since Ubisoft did anything with the game in a substantial manner. If this new upgrade pass is anything to go by, the publisher may have more up its sleeve. An announcement may be just around the corner. Maybe this expansion will be the best one of 2022 also!

They smoking some good French crack.
Hahahahaha! Are they basing this on the fact the game hasn't changed since 3? Maybe that one was GOTY.

That's like celebrating wining Sportsman of the Year or Most Improved Player. Its the kind of award you hand out to people who turn critical commentary off in FIFA 😆
By far one of the worst Far Cry games. Held my attention for 2 hours.
I absolutely loved it. Definitely one of my favourite games of last year.
I enjoyed this game more than Horizon: Forbidden West.
@ApostateMage oh dear you best brace yourself for the super horizon fanboys they won't take that comment laying down 🤭🤭
Far Cry 6 was good, just seem bad choices for the game otherwise solid entry in my opinion
It surely was one of the games released in 2021
@itsfoz I’m with ya. I enjoyed 5 and New Dawn as a spin off, but there was no compelling reason to play this. Story was weak
I really liked Far Cry 6 a bunch myself. It's my second favorite in the series behind 4. I think my personal GOTY was Halo Infinite for 2021 though or maybe Lost Judgment. Far Cry 6 probably would be around 3rd though. Great game.
GOTY is obviously pushing it but I honestly loved the game. Female Dani Rojas was dope.
A whole lot better than FC5, imo.
Which was better, this or AC Valhalla?
to be fair it was solid, not spectacular.
but so many games have this nonsense on the box. didnt cyberpunk....
@Gloamin thought as much. I picked one to play and chose AC but I knew its bloated systems would grind me down in the end. Should've played FC, I probably would've finished that.
I dislike articles like this because it’s just an excuse for people to make fun of an (actually good) game even if they haven’t played it, just because everyone else is.
I know Ubisoft deserves its flack, and I know there are issues with Far Cry 6, and, of course, people will constantly bring up, “It’s just Far Cry 3, same map, just different characters” and all of those types of comments, but there games are fun.
Sometimes, that’s all a game needs to be: Fun. I love my narrative driven games just as much as the next person. However, sometimes I just want to turn my brain off, not care, and just blow some s*** up. I don’t always need a GOTY contender. At the end of the day, gaming is a form of entertainment. Ubisoft makes some entertaining games.
I'm simply waiting for the all-encompassing edition to be $20. It's the bets way to be an Ubisoft consumer.
@BlackMayge You should change your name to WhiteNyght.
@MFTWrecks I’m thinking about it.
It was decent for what it was. It’s a pretty fun sandbox to run around and shoot people but I don’t really feel any need to play this again anytime soon. I prefer Far Cry 5 personally.
While I enjoyed most of its main campaign, its dlc was a snoozefest. Ain't played much Ubi dlc in the past but this one was a waist of my money. Game of the year what a load of bo££ocks
Far Cry 6 was my favourite Far Cry. But I was disappointed with the season pass. A real expansion would be great.
I think its a fun game. I adored 5 so it was a bit of a let down from that but it is still an all around solid experience
@BlackMayge Although it's a bit snarky, it's not really the article's fault. It's mostly the folks who take pleasure in dumping on things that others enjoy. You know the type. As soon as a new headline pops up, they see it as their sworn duty to post a reductive, negative comment. I skip over those as best I can which makes this site much more pleasant, since there are still plenty of thoughtful and interesting comments to balance things out.
um not the game i played felt like i was cheated its called far cry but it was totally something else a weak effort????
Commenter of the year, over here
@kyleforrester87 you've got something sticking out of your arse judging by Zak's face.
It's about as official as my "worlds best dad" mug
Lol okay Poopysoft.
Here's a cookie, go wait in a corner and keep your mouth shut please tyvm
If it won even one such nomination from a publication, publishers will feel free to slap the term on a box.
Somehow, I forgot this game even existed, lol.
I've been a FARCRY fan but I'm starting to get tired of the meaningless stuff. FC5 just takes it too far with the brainless respawning of enemies every single where. You can't save, can't forward time, your vehicles just disappear anyhow, the whole silliness is just too much in 5 it kills any immersion left, you wonder what you're playing exactly for. I've surprisingly started to prefer AC instead.
I got the platinum and enjoyed it for the most part but it just wasn’t gritty or realistic enough. It was like the Disney version of what living in a country ruled by a brutal dictator is like. Characters were all as deep as a puddle. More realism and horror next time please. I want to feel the hopelessness and desperation (and defiance) - not this inoffensive blandness.
Thought it was pretty good, dlc was a lot of fun too...
Got the game for free due to a promotion so yeah, it was worth every cent spent 👌 😌
was glad in the end to finish it and trade it in worst in series
Wasn't even game of the day. They really need to sort this series out. I actually really enjoyed Farcry 5 but 6 was absolutely awful.
At best, it was maybe the 'best' game that Ubisoft released that year so it is their 'Game of the Year' for whatever reason (most likely most 'profitable' to Ubisoft).
Its possible that it was a Game of the Year award winner in some category in some country from an obscure website/magazine/critic as there are a LOT more than just the 'Game Awards' that do a Game of the Year and like I said, you also have 'best Racing game of the year' and 'best action game' so it may of won some awards somewhere.
I don't even think its the best Far Cry game - but that hasn't stopped Publishers from trying to make more money by 'repackaging' a game and starting another 'marketing' cycle to remind people that FC6 exists. By marketing it as a 'Game of the year' too inc all extra content makes it seem like it was critical success and you shouldn't miss out playing it - so what better time to jump in than with a complete GotY edition...
@BlackMayge yep! It looked good (if you don't look too close at vegetation textures) it played good. And it was a whole bunch of fun. I loved it too.
It had some of my best organic gaming moments of the year too, and that's just through bugs and random stuff happening 😁😁
1: I missed a shot with a scoped rifle and "Espada" stuck her head Infront of my reticle and pulled a funny disappointed face right after. So I couldn't take a second shot and the guards were alerted.
2. A guard got stuck on the bonnet/hood of my classic race car like an ornament, as Dani (female) sang songs without a care in the world, blood spattering everywhere, body swinging around all over the place.
3. Two motorbikes with sidecars got stuck on each other and were spinning around slowly, like they were dancing together, whilst some classical latin music played in my car.
I'd recommend the game to anyone wanting to just have some fun in the sun
I mean, it definitely was a game of that year
@riceNpea that’s JD to you, squirt
Was decent, had 2 or 3 games I liked better but it was in my top 5. But hey if they have been awared a game of the year award they can technically call it that regardless of our subjective critical opinion. I am more interested in any new dlc.
I'm gonna get ***** for saying this, but 2021 and 2022's line up of games weren't mind blowing. I loved FC6 and it's definitely gotta go up in my top 5 of the last year or 2. But it did have no competition from games with similar gameplay apart from a the odd game here and there
Resident evil village called it wants it's goty 2021 award back (I know it didn't actually win but it was definitely mine)
Maybe the expansion is going to be equivalent to Primal and New Dawn?
It's okay but certainly not game of the year, visually it looks great but the story is just so boring and characters are corny, i do like some parts but really it's a game I'm gonna have to drag myself through much like the latest ghost recon games.
@LiamCroft Far Cry 6 also won the Gamescom “Best Action Game” award in 2021.
It’s still a stretch but is probably more prestigious than the GOTY awards it got from random magazines. But still, any GOTY award given can be capitalised on by publishers.
Ubisoft are not the only ones to have done this.
Every game is a GOTY contender at the right price.
Case in point: About two weeks after its release, there was a used copy of Far Cry 6 for PS5 at the local Pawn America for $14.99. I didn’t yet own a PS5, so I passed. But, for that lucky dude who did buy it at that astoundingly low price, it was likely his GOTY.
@Merasmoose I wasn’t blown away by any new release in 2021 or 2022, either, with the exception of Hades in 2021. Haven’t played Far Cry 6 yet, though. I still have to finish up FC 3 and 4.
Give me all of Splinter Cells on one game, for me Game Of The Year.
It's funny how people turn with the wind. When people praise the games, you do. When people hate the games, you do that as well. Don't people have their own opinion?
Seems like half the people here buy games they don't like over and over and over and over and over and over.. Weirdos!
FC 6 is the first FC game I have no desire to replay. It does have some fun, an interesting map, and looks and performs well on my PRO. However midway I started to lose interest, hit a wall, and then took a month break before finishing so I could delete it.
Overall I did not much like the story or the characters. About midway I wanted to ditch the Libertards and switch sides. The auto switch from first person to third person when entering a camp is very annoying and there is a loooong lag for the world map to appear after selecting it. Then there is the annoying ammo type function that for some reason had to be changed from the system in FC 5.
I thought it was just as funny when CDPR proclaimed The Witcher 3 Game of the Year. Next thing you know they'll be doing the same for Cyberpunk 2077. As far as Far Cry 6 is concerned, what the hell. Why not?
La de da de. Free John GOTY
Far cry peaked at 3
AC peaked at 4
Given microsoft's poor standards it might very well be
I only want to play this to experience Giancarlo Esposito's impeccable acting.
What was the ending like in 6? surely can't have been as bad as the one in 5?
@Doublecell 😂🤣😭😆French crack🤣😆
Same game every year with little to NO innovation spells NOT a contender for game of the year. Sorry. It's boring.
It's a far cry from Game of the Year. 😬
6 is by far the worst in the series. It literally took good things from the series and made them worse. 3 will probably always be the best, but 5 is super underrated. A fantastic nuanced villain and solid gameplay make it absolutely worth playing.
Lol. The worst Far Cry game in years. Especially the parts with infinite spawning enemies. The only positive was the Queer representation with characters.
I think Colin said it was his game of the year on Sacred Symbols. So be ready for this article to be blasted on the next episode.
It was...ok. not FarCry 4 or FarCry Primal. But ok.
I bought it earlier in the year and I've yet to finish it.
Plat still achievable? Aware insurgent leader's gone & be tricky (unless just play it vanilla).
@ApostateMage Honestly, same. That's a brave, and respectable opinion.
@Winter2k23 Ha. Will acknowledge 'Ultimate Eds' when they release a version with every armor sets/weapons/aka $$$ nonsense across AC Origins/AC Odyssey & Vallhalla. But no. pretty sure AC3 did it.
Thought it was great ,but I love most of these copy and paste ubi games.
This is hilarious, i absolutely love the series but this is the only one i haven't finished and have zero plans to do so
I always have a blast with these games. If you have an obsessive compulsive disorder, that's on you. 99% of games are repetitive, especially open world titles.
Well, I’ll say this much about FC6 - it was definitely the best one since FC3, IMHO, DLC and all and absolutely a lot of fun to play. But game of the year?!?!?!? Over Returnal or Deathloop?!?!?! Heck, even over ALIENS: Fireteam Elite???…………….. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have no opinion on Far Cry 6 since I haven't played the game yet, but from what I've seen of the trailers and gameplay it looked awesome.
