Earlier this week, CD Projekt Red revealed that it's forming a new studio in Boston, Massachusetts in the US. It's a big move for the Polish outfit, as this division of the company will be responsible for Project Orion — otherwise known as the full-blown sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.
And CDPR certainly isn't skimping on this one. In its most recent investors presentation, the developer says that this new studio will be spearheaded by a number of 2077 leads, and that it'll likely be made up of around 300 to 500 employees. That's a big workforce, and it'll also be drafting CD Projekt Red North America (situated in Vancouver, Canada) to help with the process.
We suppose it's easy to forget that Cyberpunk 2077 is almost two years old, since it feels like the game only really released near the start of 2022, when the drastically improved PS5 version dropped. Still, there's no doubt that this sequel is a long way off.
CDPR formally announced a bunch of titles a few days back, including two new Witcher games (both being developed outside of CDPR), along with confirmation that the next mainline Witcher title will be the start of a planned trilogy. A brand new, original IP is in the conceptual phase as well.
With all of this going on, you'd be forgiven for thinking that a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 might be lower on the studio's priority list — but that certainly doesn't seem to be the case.

As long as it has enough time in the oven, yes please. Bit early for speculation but . . . I wonder if it will be set in Night City but in a different time period. Sorta like a mega-sized version of what the RGG games do with Kamurocho. If so, that would reduce development time compared to the first.
Hopefully diversifying their portfolio means they leave individual studios alone to take their time since they’ll have staggered deliveries. I love the Cyberpunk world and lore, enjoyed the game but still think it’s a bit lacking mechanically. There’s so much they can do with a sequel. They should keep hype levels in check this time.
I'm sure after the lessons learnt the next cyberpunk will be great because if it had released bug free then it's still a great game underneath
To translate all of this recent noise coming out of CDPR:
Dear investors,
Invest in us. Don't pull your money, please! We have plans for the future!
I don't know I think they're basing this entire decision on the fact that the game sold well and it kind of overlooking the fact that it sold well based on reputation and fraud essentially.
I think with the recent influx of players all because of a Cheesy anime they might be overestimating how many people would just jump right back into their arms. there is still a ton of people and you can see it in any forum or comment section all over, that are still very upset with the LIE that cdpr pulled.
For them to pull off what they are hoping to sell to their investors which is that this sequel will sell just as well, is hard to imagine and feels somewhat like they are still not looking at reality. Even just seeing them announcing their plans for the next 10 years almost shows that they didn't learn anything and they would have to completely do pre-release differently and be transparent and there's just a lot because this time around no one's going to be okay with them taking 2 years to moderately fix the release of an unfinished game that was heavily lied about.
If anything all of this cdpr news this week was really a clear example cuz they didn't really learn a whole lot because this is all investor call information and the fact that they're pitching so much hype already and such an enormous timeline and commitment of games to investors suggests that once again they're just trying to get that money in and worry about it later; somehow busting out half a dozen or more games in the next several years is ridiculous.
Time will tell. But I doubt enough will be different simply because in all honesty they pulled off quite the profitable deception with cyberpunk, and such a profitable turd likely masked the smell enough To where they will gladly wade through it again chasing similar sales figures. Especially considering the management in place is all the same.
@QualityGeezer don't worry, I'm sure they did learn their lesson that they can release a buggy mess and it'll still sell millions of copies, raking in boatloads of cash.
@Milktastrophe I don't agree with the mess it realised in the point I'm making is if the was no bugs at launch and it was how it should have been it's a very good game
I feel this was their original plans for CyberPunk not something new.
Didn't they have a somewhat disastrous launch of Witcher 3, where they had to scramble to regain good will - and did such a good job that suddenly they became the darling that could do no wrong? Surely they learned from the mistakes of Witcher 3 and wouldn't repeat that with Cyberpunk 2077...right?
In 5-10 years we'll be saying the same thing. Memories fade. People will forget the angst and the stock drop, and remember the total sales numbers and the stock rebound. It's easy to say you won't have crunch or release a buggy game when your deadline is years in the future - it's a lot harder when your deadline is in the past, especially years in the past.
I'm skeptical. But I'm skeptical of EVERY game until I can see someone in the real world play the release version themselves. Preorders are for fools.
What I want from a sequel? A smaller, less cluttered map, better main story, true endgame (not just thrown back to before the last mission), option to play 3rd person and cutscenes like in Witcher 3.
@RobN No. Witcher 3 had a pretty good launch!
they bet big the first time around too and look how that turned out
I'm going to remain skeptical until the game is out and has been reviewed.
