Sony Santa Monica has today confirmed that God of War Ragnarok, the eagerly anticipated sequel to 2018's God of War, will be getting a photo mode, but it wont be ready in time for launch.
The developer announced the news on Twitter in response to a preview from virtual photographer TheFourthFocus, which noted the absence of the feature.
As TheFourthFocus notes, God of War on PS4 had a photo mode added several weeks after launch, so perhaps this shouldn't be too much of a surprise. The feature has become something of a staple, especially amongst PlayStation's roster of first-party titles, with Spider-Man: Miles Morales, The Last of Us: Part II and Ghost of Tsushima all notable for their excellent implementation.
The release of God of War Ragnarok is fast approaching, with the title set to launch on 9th November. and yester we got a trailer detailing the game's excellent-looking combat.
Do you use photo mode in games? Will you miss this feature during your first playthrough of God of War Ragnarok? Paint us a picture in the comments section below.

Must have run out of time, never tend to use the feature though unless there is a trophy linked to it
Never use this feature myself but I sure do miss the days games were complete for launch and devs couldn’t rely on updates to add whole features or to fix their game (hopefully not in this case)
I'm fine with this. I personally never use the photo modes. What am I supposed to do with the photos? Probably one more for journalists and YouTubers anyway.
Slightly surprising as this will be built on an enhanced version of the old games engine they already have photo mode. Must have run out of time and this is a nice add but not a big deal for the vast majority.
Good, better to enjoy the game rather than continually stopping to take screen captures
I really enjoy taking pictures in the games I enjoy the most. Just wish I was good at it and that my photos didn't look bad when I put them onto the laptop. They always end up looking darker and less attractive compared to the TV.
@MattBoothDev there is a massive community of virtual photographers, it’s become it’s own art form now. Get some beautiful images out of that community.
It's just a simple setting? Why can't it ship on the disc at launch? Doesn't make any sense 🤷♀️
@Moonmonkey it's pretty much useless to me, it's only use is for social media fanatics and I never use it unless like you mentioned
@itsfoz games release at launch in bit's and prices, the reason they can be so lenient is because of this "patch later" attitude they have now, yeah it's a shame
Personally never used photo mode to much in games there a nice additions but nothing critical to my enjoyment. Would much rather the game ship than them delay it a month just to add a photo mode and other small non critical features.
@huyi These Photo Modes have become way more than simple settings these days to be fair!
Cool. God of photos 🐐 👑.word up son
@get2sammyb Yeah I don't think @huyi has ever used a photo mode, the one in Miles Morales needed an instruction manual. I took 2 photos and that was it b/c it was so time consuming trying to figure everything out.
GoW 2018 had a patch a day for the first 14-16 days or so after release so GoW:R could be ready to go for the people who get it as a Christmas gift.🎄
I wouldn't ordinarily use it but RDR2 was an exception. Way too many incredible vistas and atmospheric shots to pass up in that game.
Also, the recent AC games introduced a feature where the location where you took the pictures is tagged on the map, which means you can revisit the specific location. It's a small detail, but one which encouraged me to take a few shots in that game as well.
@GhostInAJar I'm just... Old
Screen shots are usually enough for me, but a good photo mode can add much more. Far Cry 5 has one the best photo modes, better than FC6, that I have used, and is simple to use.
A good and easy to use photo mode would be nice at release, but it may not be that simple to implement and is thus scheduled for post release.
@Moonmonkey Same here! I tend to only use Photo Mode if it's attached to a trophy, otherwise I usually don't bother.
It doesn't bother me only because I never play games day 1 anyway Even tho I can't wait to play this game I won't be playing it for at least 6 or 7 months because of my back-log of games so by the time I play it, it should have no bugs etc etc in the game & it will be complete with all features ready for me
@Dr_Luigi Sometimes they see a chance to make improvements and then just do it.
