God of War Ragnarok’s hotly anticipated release is fast approaching, and further evidence of its impending 9th November launch has emerged as part of its ESRB summary. While the classification – which includes an age rating for the US audience – is light on any particularly illuminating information, it does confirm that you should expect plenty of gratuitous gore, as the series is known for.
Without delving into too many spoilers, the rating summary reveals: “This is an action adventure game in which players help Kratos and his son on a dangerous quest. Players explore various realms and engage in frenetic hand-to-hand combat against human-like raiders and fantastical creatures. Players use axes and chained blades to battle enemies, often resulting in large blood-splatter effects and dismemberment.”
Nothing particularly unexpected there, is there? The synopsis does add: “Players can perform finishing attacks that depict close-up impalement via bladed and handheld weapons; repeated axe strikes to a creature's neck results in decapitation. The words ‘f**k’ and ‘sh*t’ are heard in the game.” So there we have it: curse words confirmed.

"Players use axes and chained blades often resulting in large blood-splatter effects and dismemberment". It actually sound funny when you try to describe God of War combat in a serious way.
Since it isn’t mentioned in the story, the actual classification of was an M rating. Not that that should be a surprise.
@awp69
Yeah I figured that as generally you don't see gore in a T rated game lol.
Glad to see that Santa Monica just reached Naughty Dog status and are now allowed to use curse words!
No hot springs scene? Damn.
So, safe for kids then? Good father/son story amirite?
N.i.c.e.Kratos the g.o.a.t 🐐 👑.cant wait for another masterpiece.word up son
@awp69 Lol was wondering this. Not sure how you write a story about the rating and don't include it!
Clear my calendar. Cant wait.
@auditor01 Yeah, I thought it was odd as well, lol.
Hoping for one of kratos 'mini games' if you know , you know lol
@uptownsoul I know one particular commenter will say it's the same sony game they always make but with a different skin lol
@KaijuKaiser The third act that contains some of the best bosses in the game and one of the best most challenging areas?
@WallyWest I was about to say the same thing. I thought the third act really drove the game home, and created some of the best moments in the entire game.
I’m really excited for this game, but I’m fearful it’s going to be too much of the same thing. I get that it’s a sequel, and why change things that aren’t broken — yet there has to be some new additions to elevate it above the first.
I also think critics and consumers are being more harsh on Sony’s first party games nowadays (a good thing, if done fairly). I wonder if Ragnarok is going to suffer the Horizon Forbidden West treatment. Only a month and a week to find out.
@AFCC
God of War 2018 had several F-bombs. Just saying.
"The words ‘f**k’ and ‘sh*t’ are heard in the game"
That's whatcha get for having Brok in the game, ain't it ?
But without him it just wouldn't be the same...
So no orgy in this one too? lmao
Kratos was wild back in the day
“The words ‘f**k’ and ‘sh*t’ are heard in the game.”
Brok’s lines, no doubt 😁
@BlackMayge One of my favourite From bosses is in the 3rd act, she's a tough b**ch but my god its one hell of a fight.
@KaijuKaiser The fact you think i'm on about the snow area suggests you didn't do much exploring. Yeah the mountains are one of the more weaker locations but its a doorway to one of the best looking and most challenging areas what is home to the best and hardest boss in the game.
@KaijuKaiser It did very well, but it wasn’t as favorable as the first. It was heavily criticized for its open world - though critics did say that game perfected the formula. Personally, I loved it. In fact, it’s my GOTY so far.
@KaijuKaiser Aaannd I'm guessing Sekiro is a step back from Bloodborne. And then Bloodborne is a step back from Demon Souls. And then Demon Souls is a step back from Mario 64 right right...
@KaijuKaiser I'm talking about the home of Malenia and of course her, both are two of the best things about the game. As for Sekiro well combat is better if you like parrying but for me its weakest From game since DS2, its great for what it is but Bloodborne, Dark Souls 1 and 3 and Elden Ring are far far better.
These age ratings mean basically nothing because they're not enforced at shops. I don't know why they bother with them anymore.
@MattBoothDev
It's just so the U.S government can f--k off. Because congress told the gaming industry either you enforce your own rating system or we will make our own. Stores are required to enforce it by upper management but nothing legally will happen if they don't as the supreme court ruled the government cannot legally punish the sale of explicit video games to minors due to the first amendment.
Happy to hear the game may even be more bloody and graphic than the first one.
