Dutch developer Guerrilla Games’ delectable Decima Engine is being leveraged by “several studios”, according to PS Studios bigwig Hermen Hulst. The Amsterdam-based outfit famously handed Hideo Kojima the source code to its tech, which was later used to create Death Stranding – and according to leaked documents, the sequel will be built using the same toolset.
Of course, that project’s still unannounced, so Hulst didn’t comment on that, but he did allude to the following in an interview with Japanese gaming institute, Famitsu: “There is the sharing of technology,” he said of the advantages of the PS Studios division. “For example, there are several studios using Guerrilla Games’ Decima Engine. We also place importance on improving our technology, and we share that idea among the studios.”
We suspect Firesprite’s upcoming PSVR2 exclusive Horizon Call of the Mountain is leveraging the Decima Engine, but with so much of Sony’s upcoming portfolio underwraps, it’s difficult to discuss what else could be using the tech – outside of the aforementioned Death Stranding sequel, of course. Still, Horizon Forbidden West was a real jaw-dropper on the PS5, so we’re in favour of more devs taking advantage of those features.

I think Bend 'studios New Game is using the decima engine in the past aside from gueriila games and kojima supermassive used it for untill dawn.
As long as not all of them are remakes, there is plenty to be excited about with this I suppose.
@Vil If Sony is actually remastering Horizon you better believe that remasters are going to make up so many of these upcoming singleplayer games that Sony assures us they are invested in.
@OmegaStriver there not many relevant big ps4 games left to remaster for ps5 after horizon besides god of war.
Well, makes sense.
Decima makes porting quite easy.
I can't wait to see all the exciting PS4 games they build around this engine!
@4kgk2 They could remaster Killzone Shadows Fall, Infamous Second Son, Bloodborne, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, TLoU2, Dreams, Days Gone, pretty much every single PS4 game they released.
You can say it’s unlikely but I sure as hell never imagined they would have done the amount of remasters and remakes they’ve already done, so, it’s definitely possible.
@OmegaStriver ghost already got remastered lol. Infamous and killzone are dead franchise so they won’t get remastered. Ok I give you Dreams and The last of us 2 them two might get remastered.
Makes sense right after Sony says they will keep supporting PS4 we find out a game engine that runs well on both PS5 and PS4 is being used by several games. Coincidence? I think not.
@4kgk2 Yeah, and TLoU already got remastered before it was updated again. Sony plans on doing a GoT show, so there is a good chance they would want some new GoT game media to go with it.
Perhaps Sony should consider open this engine to public and compete with Unreal.
@OmegaStriver they can’t remaster ghost for same console you negative fool.
@SweetSummerShunv Sony wouldn’t want the decima engine on a Xbox plus Sony own some of epic so it wouldn’t benefit Sony to compete with ue5.
It is a fantastic engine. Sony should use it as much as possible.
PS4, PS5, PC… and even on SteamDeck. It is impressive how well the engine adapts.
@BeerIsAwesome Kojima Productions built Death Stranding in 3 years on it so i’d guess so
So is this indirect confirmation that future Sony games will again be cross gen as forbidden west was?
@BeerIsAwesome - Indeed, Kojima Production praised the Decima Engine for being quite advanced while still being easy to use. And according to Guerrilla Games themselves, when developing Horizon Zero Dawn, the world & assets were mostly pre-generated, and they worked on top of the pre-generated world & assets until it became what it is now.
Apparently, the Decima Engine is great for speedy development, hence why Death Stranding & Until Dawn only took 2 years to make.
Kojima better not use that Decima engine for the Xbox exclusive.
good 👍 mods for pc will be created for this engine and hopefully console commands. i love tweaking in game values. mass effect 1 had the viewmode unlit command when the characters changed to blobs on screen.
@GreatAuk Ha, ha! I was about to say the very same thing!
@SweetSummerShunv Sony is not a rival of EPIC because they are friendly towards each other and there are a lot of collaborations between them, but I would love for this engine to be open to everyone so that we can see more amazing games like Horizon. It's an amazing engine and I'd love for more developers to get more diversity of great engines like UNREAL.
@uptownsoul Yep. CD Projekt red, are ditching the Red Engine, and replacing the new Witcher games, and next Cyberpunk with Unreal 5.
A game engine is the heart and soul of a game. How’s it’s built and how well it runs. It’s a loop that cycles through at the power of your system. It loads all assets, takes the user input to send events to the programs to make you walk etc, animates, triggers sounds, parses all the gfx and physics, and that’s just the start 😂.
The trick for the devs is to make it run at its optimum frames per second for every device. These days that’s anything from 60fps to 120, and at least a steady 30 fps for last gen.
Unreal 5 has been a huge step forward, and yep most companies are now dropping their proprietary engines for it. The success of this engine is definitely an interesting alternative and I’d love to see a side by side comparison of native features and how easy it is to adapt new ones.
@Avishayafriat Yes I'm aware of the relationship between Sony and Epic. Rather I intended it as some kind of alternative to UE5 and perhaps should aim for a different segment of gamemaking altogether.
