In all the enthusiast chatter about a potential PlayStation showcase to close out the year, the game being brought up the most is, understandably, Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Announced as part of last year's main event from Sony, the big sequel to Insomniac Games' superhero romp is pencilled in for a 2023 release. Nothing's changed on that front, but fans have been getting antsy, clamouring to see more of the title soon.
A showcase would be the perfect place to show it off, but as October rumbles on, that's seeming less and less likely. As a result, Spidey fans are becoming worried about the superhero sequel, and that it might be releasing later than expected. Developer Insomniac has stepped in to try and calm things down:
As you can see in this response to a follower, Insomniac assures the team is "making good progress" on the game, and that it's "still slated for 2023". It adds that public showings of games "takes time, effort, resources and coordination".
Insomniac is one of Sony's most industrious and consistent studios, so we wouldn't worry about Spider-Man 2 one bit. The first game and its smaller follow-up, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, are both great, and we expect the upcoming, PS5-only, action adventure will blow our socks off when it's ready for a proper reveal.

Spider-Man 2018s gameplay got shown 2016, 2 years prior of its release. So I really doubt 2023 is the year of Spider-Man 2 in 2023. But I would love to be wrong about that.
I was about to snarkily comment "2024 confirmed", but this is Insomniac so who knows, absolute wizards.
That's what most devs have said before so I don't believe that for one second
@uptownsoul Not a chance if SM2 is not also coming to PS4 lol
I'd guess we'll see first gameplay at the Game Awards and the game releases in September 2023 given the release timings for FF16 and FF7 Rebirth.
@uptownsoul E3 2016, the initial reveal had gameplay.
@uptownsoul Its not bigger than Zelda tho lol, especially a sequel to the best selling Game of the Franchise. And again, there are way less PS5s sold than Switch Consoles. And not forgetting that PS5 sales are also way behind the PS4 cause of shortages. After recent Interviews Im certain that SM2 will come to PS4 too tho
Spider man 2 could out sell Zelda if they made it cross generation PS4 and PS5 also later PC sales.
@uptownsoul Splatoon 3 sold almost 4 Million Games in 3 days in Japan alone. Thats more than the majority of Sony exclusives sell world wide on Release haha. The last Animal Crossing sold 11 Million in less than 2 weeks too
N.i.c.e. i cant wait for marvel spiderman 2.the first one is amazing.queens new york represent.word up son
They shouldn't have made Miles yet tbh.
Peter is now the backseat in his own game. Miles has exactly the same skill set and plays exactly the same yet has better additional powers than the actual spider-man. They also made Peter weaker in Miles (getting knocked out by Rhino then saved by the rookie). He should have come later.
Aka we'll show it whe its ready - completely the right approach.
Hope they find a way to introduce some new environments beyond just New York in this one.
Whatever the case, i can't wait for this
When was new God Of War gameplay shown? A few month before release. It will be ok, insomniac releases games on time
Insomniac seems to have their development pipeline down to a science so I'm confident it will release next year. If it doesn't though it's fine. Not the end of the world when a game gets delayed.
Amazed that they bothered answering to someone who admitted to bugging them about the game. I’m looking forwards to it too, but it’s really not that hard to just wait patiently.
Spider-man, spider-man, does whatever a spider can, watch out, here comes the spider-maaaaan
Christmas 2023 is a possiblity, wouldn't be surprised at all if it was put back to 2024 though.
Can't wait! I'm already sold for day 1 and part of me doesn't want to watch so I could enjoy it properly when it launches. But i don't think I have the willpower to look away
Insomniac. Possibly the best developer of video games out there. The fact they're so productive with every game being such a high quality is insane.
Cannot wait for this one.
Side note, I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't PS5 only after all based upon the recent comments of not leaving PS4 behind by Mr Ryan, but I'm sure this game will be amazing regardless.
The same people saying spider man 2 isn’t coming out next year is the same people who was saying god of war Ragnarok wasn’t coming out this year. I put my faith in Insomniac because spider man 2 been in development since at least 2018.
Oh the death knell of reassurance from corpo.
Can't wait. Please don't release it only 30fps ...
Glad Insomniac is holding down the fort for Playstation. They’re pretty much the reason I’ll get a PS5 when this comes out.
…unless there’s a PS4 version 😉
TBH, even though I have a PS5 I would like Spiderman 2 (and RE4 but this was confirmed) to come to PS4. Some of my friends won't be able to play the games otherwise. As for the next Final Fantasy games I am not really sure...
I’d rather they work on the game then give us a video to see. A little bit of game play would be nice but I think most people would know what it looks like or plays like from the last two games.
@Ashcrapper Miles Morales had a performance mode on release, so I would be shocked if Spidey 2 didn’t have at least the option to change frame rate on PS5.
Sure. That's what they said about Instinction... a Dino Crisis spiritual successor. "It's on track..." It was supposed to release a month ago after being delayed a year. Now it's delayed until some time in 2025... practically vaporware.
I'll believe a release date window when I see the game sitting on store shelves.
@uptownsoul Spider-man was definitely revealed at E3 2016 with gameplay. Here is the trailer (check the date) and here's the PushSquare article from 2016
That doesn't mean I buy the "it was shown with gameplay 2 years before... therefore Spider-man 2 must be too" argument by OP. These announcements happen for various reasons often more due to Sony needing something to show than the studios timeline, devs often get frustrated a vertical slice of their game is revealed before they are ready. Remember puddle-gate?
If I had to bet i'd put my money on a delay to 2024, but this is Insomniac.
If anyone can deliver a great game in a timely and efficient manner, It's Insomniac Games! They are wizards when it comes to working on multiple games at once and STILL releasing them at a reasonable timeframe. And should it be delayed, then so be it, I'd rather have a delayed more polished game versus a rushed-out game with issues.
I’d imagine they’re building this on the foundations of the original Spider-Man and MM so the basis of the map should be there, hopefully they’re adding in some interiors etc to shake things up. I’m not hugely knowledgeable on Spider-Man but isn’t it based mostly in Manhattan?
@CapGod
Don’t forget about…
I am the emissary from hell, SUPAIDAMAN!
Miles Morales just had an update on PS4 not sure if it added anything though
@OrtadragoonX
What???
@uptownsoul Weird choice of words.
I suppose 2016 could be viewed as more of a teaser due to the fast cuts, but it was all in game, not CGI, and contained gameplay segments, both fighting and web slinging, in between clips of cut scenes.
2017s trailer was the first time we saw an extended gameplay segment of one area of the game, but it definitely wasn’t the first time we’d seen any gameplay, that was in 2016.
@CapGod
Lol back in the day (the late 1970s) Marvel licensed Spiderman to Toei Company in Japan to make a series suitable for Japanese audiences; it was part of Marvel’s early efforts to branch out from comic books and attract international consumers.
Thing is that unlike today where licenses included clauses that restrict how you can use the character, the license for Japanese Spider-Man didn’t include such use clauses.
So Toei went absolutely nuts with the show and it basically turned into a Super Sentai series (it actually heavily influenced later Super Sentai series, like what would be used to become Power Rangers for the United States), complete with monsters of the week story telling, Spiderman having a “mega-zord” named Leopardon, having a machine gun toting car, and just being generally insane from start to finish.
Funniest part of the series to me was that around the middle of production the suit for Leopardon was stolen. The team didn’t have the budget to make another one (it was a super detailed full body suit) so they had to reuse footage of the early Leopardon fights for the rest of the series. That meant every single monster fight ended the same, with Spiderman yelling “SWORD VIGOR” in Engrish and Leopardon throwing the sword and destroying the monster.
If you’ve seen power rangers then the set up for Spider-Man Japan is exactly the same. There’s some plot establishing the monster of the week, some side character backstory, Supaidaman suffering some sort of mental and emotional crisis, a fight with the “putty patrol” equivalent villains, then the main antagonist of the series pulls out some new monster creation, Supaidaman and the monster fight, then the monster transforms into a bigger size, Supaidman calls up Leopardon, and then the fight I described earlier happens.
Also how he gets his powers is weird. Some alien dies on the pilot episode and gives him the legendary demon powers of the great spider or some nonsense like that. So Supaidaman often says “I am the emissary from hell, Supaidaman” when a new villain asks him who he is or what he’s about.
Until the community pressure starts up again.
@JAMes-BroWWWn Spider-Man 2 was revealed on September 9th, 2021, not sometime in 2022. So a 2023 release makes perfect sense.
