We're getting scarily close to release of Sonic Frontiers, due out in just a couple of weeks or so. SEGA's fresh spin for its mascot's latest game looks to change up the formula quite a bit, with open areas to run around in and plenty of enemies to engage in combat. This new gameplay video from IGN takes us on a tour of Chaos Island — the game's third area, which looks to be high up in the clouds.
With all the springs and grind rails hovering around everywhere, it looks as though you'll be able to pinball your way through the environment with ease. The gameplay is pretty fast-paced, and is definitely a stronger showing for Frontiers, which hasn't had the best pre-launch build-up. It culminates with Sonic taking down one of the title's giant creatures (robots?) in typically speedy fashion.
The video description tells us that Tails is trapped on this island, and you'll need to gather his "memory tokens" in order to free him. We're not entirely sure how that all works, to be honest, but we're interested to find out when Frontiers launches on 8th November.

Well, still does not look like a £49.99 must-have for me. Those sudden objects popping up from time to time look weird. Overall gameplay and lack of style... Perhaps just not my game. Hope it plays better than on all those videos and brings some fun and joy for the players.
And I'm glad the Sonic is not forgotten. Perhaps one day this blue hedgehog will regain my attention once again.
This looks a bit bland to me. Also it doesn't look like you are in control of Sonic very much. I think I will give this a pass.
Looking pretty good thankfully! I'm definitely interested in this one but I'll wait to see some reviews first.
I’m always willing to give Sonic another shot, but other than the racing games it’s been tough sledding lately. I’ve been playing Sonic Colors off and on for what seems like forever, and I continue to find it easy to put down. I think it’s the inconsistency of the rules (i.e. this will kill you here, but not there), sometimes within the same level. A fresh start like Frontiers might be just the thing.
This continues to look like a tech demo with inconsistent textures, and frequent pop-in. Where is the colour, where is the excitement? Why does it all look so bland. What am i missing here?
There is no reason open world sonic design can't work but this just feels so off to me - as someone who has been playing Sonic games since he first emerged on the scene, this one is currently leaving me cold
After being a skeptic, I'm actually looking forward to this. It looks like a fun romp.
@Rob_230 It certainly has that user modded feel to it; like it's something half finished in Gary's mod or Forge. Also that pop-in, yikes!
the hell is this , a student project ??
i already accepted that the AAA quality of this franchise is long gone , but it’s still hard to stomach .
Looks like their game engine isnt up to the task, horrible pop-ins etc. Hopefully they can fix some of it but its close to release now so probably not.
Is this a mobile game? Why is everything grey?
I dunno. Maybe, I guess.
To be honest, it looks pretty bad. Desolate world, weird floating structures that make no sense, lots of pop-in, no sense of where you are or where to go, abrupt camera pans trying to keep up with Sonic. It’s just disappointing; and I say this as a big fan of the ol’ Dreamcast Sonic Adventure games
Way too much pop in. They had all this time and still have problems from the ps3 Era.
@crazykcarter the gameplay is barely even sonic at all . these devs don’t know what sonic gameplay even is ; this is bad
they think adding rail grinding and a boost , and calling it a day is good
I’ve JUST NOW decided I will not be buying this game. It looks too frantic (perhaps for my current older self) and I’m noticing lots of blatant pop-in that I wouldn’t expect to be happening this generation.
It looks like a bunch of short sequences stitched together. I can’t tell if the video is cut and restarting at points 😬
It’s too quick/twitchy and hectic/sporadic for me.
There are some good ways for going for a desolate world setting in a open-world action game, but I'm not seeing any of them here sadly enough.
