The console landscape is changing. While the PS5 – despite all of its pandemic-induced inventory issues – remains one of the fast-selling formats of all time, the so-called “network effect” that determined previous generations is eroding. With crossplay surging in popularity across many of the biggest franchises, including FIFA and Call of Duty, there’s less reason to own the same brand as your buddies. Furthermore, stronger competition from both Microsoft and Nintendo means there are more viable alternatives to PlayStation then there has perhaps been previously.
None of this is to belittle Sony’s efforts, of course, it’s just the reality – the manufacturer has to adapt and work that little bit harder to retain the loyalty of its customers. That’s where PS Stars comes in, of course: a long overdue retention scheme that’s free to join and attempts to “gameify” the entire ecosystem. Having launched last week in North America and several days ago in Europe, it’s extremely early days for the service, but it’s a welcome addition nonetheless.
Many will, of course, point to established schemes from both Microsoft and Nintendo and use them to illustrate the shortcomings here. But it’s important to underline the above point: we’re not even a month into this programme just yet, and we’d like to think Sony has a roadmap to improve its overall offering now that it’s dipped its toes into the water. That said, to deal with the great stinking elephant looking over our shoulder: no, this loyalty scheme isn’t as strong as what the competition’s offering. That doesn’t make it worthless, though.
Currently restricted to the PS App, with native support for the PS5 promised soon, the headline feature here is the fact that PS Plus members can earn Points on every purchase. We’ve tested it, and it doesn’t really matter what you’re spending on – whether it’s games, subscriptions, DLC, or microtransactions – you’ll get ten Points for every dollar spent. (Or the equivalent in your currency, of course.) You’ll actually be surprised how quickly it adds up if you’re a big PS Store user; somehow, we’ve already amassed over 300 Points, without even really trying. Scary!
Of course, the advantage here is that these Points can then be traded for PS Store credit. It’s a shame that you can only “purchase” denominations of wallet top-ups; we reckon the Nintendo format, where you can use your Coins whenever for even a few pennies saving, is superior. But nonetheless, up until this month you got nothing back on your PS Store purchases, and now you get an approximately four per cent return. Look, it may not be quite what you wanted, but as big spenders on PlayStation we’re certainly going to take this over nothing, which was the case just a couple of weeks ago. You do you.
There are other ways to earn Points, and we suspect these will multiply as the service matures. For example, if you buy one of the current PS Store Picks, you can get a 50 Points bonus in addition to your cashback as described above. Obviously, this is going to become Sony’s way of incentivising purchases, but again, if you were planning to purchase, say, Inscryption anyway – well, why not take the bonus on top? Like we alluded to above, the Points do add up fast.
Perhaps the differentiator here are the Digital Collectibles. These are actually surprisingly well rendered dioramas which include famous PlayStation products and even characters. The selection, thus far, leans heavily on Ape Escape – which is an interesting choice for launch, but we’re sure the likes of Aloy, Kratos, et al will follow. These are actually surprisingly well sculpted; we love the T-Rex tech demo from the PS1, which is clutching Sly Cooper’s staff for some reason. It’s a neat little Easter egg for long-time PlayStation fans.
In fact this whole system reminds us of what Trophies were supposed to be. The veterans among you may recall the halcyon days of PS3, when Sony was promoting PS Home and promised you’ll be able to display your Trophies in your personal apartment space. This obviously never came to fruition, it was a pie-in-the-sky idea (although we’re sure internally the manufacturer did experiment with it), but you actually do get a little display case on the PS App, and the platform holder has promised it will integrate this into PS5 profiles moving forwards. So, that’s pretty cool, no?
We reckon the Campaigns themselves could be a bit more inventive, though. So far, it’s mostly just booting up games, although the Hit Play/1994 one does work a little bit like a quiz. We can’t help but ponder how much electricity and bandwidth is being eaten up by people downloading 75GB games in order to unlock a virtual Chord Machine, but we suppose this is all a net positive for Sony’s monthly active user statistics, and as we’ve hinted at, that will be a huge driver behind the initiative’s existence to begin with.
Clearly, as we’ve already mentioned, there’s room to improve here. Better challenges and more meaningful rewards are a must. But as we’ve alluded to several times, we’re finally getting cashback on our PS Store purchases. Do we wish it was more? Absolutely – but we’ll take something over nothing. The Digital Collectibles, pointless as they may be, are just the cute little icing on the cake from where we’re sitting. So, then, PS Stars: it’s not really a star yet, is it? More like one of the supporting cast from a cancelled Netflix show. But look, it’s a welcome addition and there’s still plenty of time for this to grow.
If you’re looking to get started, you can refer to our PS Stars guide for a lot more information, including how to complete many of the Campaigns. Of course, we’d also like to hear your opinions on the loyalty programme, and how you think it should improve. Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

It's a neat idea but it's a bit of a nothing at the minute. Hopefully Sony sticks with it and makes it worthwhile, and doesn't just ditch it 18 months down the line.
Since they for absolutely no reason decided to not release it in Norway I can't even use it
I think most of us were hoping for some kind of trophy integration. I’d like them to tie some more substantial reward to trophy accomplishments.
As it sits now, this feels like it’s almost a competing system to their existing trophy and PSN leveling system.
I realize they are in a tough spot there with all the shovelware 2 minute platinums, but it would be nice to reward your most active players who get a lot of trophies and spend a lot of time in your ecosystem.
As someone who buys a lot of my games physically, I won’t be getting much out of this. And it’s fine. Like the articles says, something is better than nothing. Maybe they will improve it.
Overdue? I mean, apart from the collectibles, isn't the rewards part just a less rewarding version of Sony Rewards? For subscribing to both PS+ and Now, you'd get 3x points I think from Sony Rewards, but now you just get 1x points from PS Stars as long as you've got PS+, regardless of the tier.
Not gonna lie, I will keep my expectations low for now. Maybe I could cash out at once when Sony announces PS Stars is shutting down.
I've somehow completed all of the campaigns and gotten myself 475 points.
It's a very nice feature. I love the collectibles. But yeah, it'd be nice if we could use the points we have to chip away at the cost of any purchase.
Think il be stuck on level one until i buy a game, sorry i like my physical copies XD
I buy a lot of games from the PlayStation Store, so I really appreciate the points. As someone that really liked collecting the Nintendo trophies in the older Super Smash Bros. games, I like the idea of collecting PlayStation themed trophies. Although the ones that are available now aren’t too interesting I’ll admit. The campaigns could be fun too, but again the ones that are available at the moment aren’t too interesting.
Can we stop exusing poor services with the excuse that 'it's just launched it will get better' they've had more than enough time to check out the competitions offerings & they finally launch their own rewards program & it's crap
@Would_you_kindly Well of course it’s going to evolve and get better over time. It’s new, so there’s going to be some trial and error. It’s unrealistic to think that something will be perfect when it’s first released. 🤷
It is not good yet. For instance, the only way to gain points in these starting challenges is purchasing games. It seems like a exploit in some ways, although I believe this is not their intention.
@Bentleyma assuming they don't abandon it like they did with the PS2 classics on PS4
@Would_you_kindly You never know, they seemed to have abandoned PS1 games on PlayStation Plus Premium already!
I like it but agree that is needs to evolve, things like a GoW Ragnarok event where you can get exclusive collectables, also if you platinum the game within 2 months you get 300 points or something. It add extra incentive.
@Would_you_kindly if we stop excusing it then we’ll be called trolls , moaners , muck , etc
criticisms not allowed !
@Would_you_kindly This. So many people forgive poor design because "[company x] is new to it."
Well, yes. And whose fault is that? Theirs. The longer you wait, the more customer expectations adjust and evolve.
A new car company can't come out with a Model T competitor today. Expectations have changed. Companies shouldn't be immune to criticism for being late to the game and putting out something worse than the competition.
Tbh I wish the loyalty part of it buying games, getting points was just integrated into the store and the figure collectables were a addition to platinum trophy so you could show you fav platinums ect
The points are really the only thing I care for and sure while it'd be nice to get more points for a purchase it's better than nothing. I don't love it but I don't hate it either. It's fine.
@MFTWrecks yeah really irks me when people excuse the terrible ps plus premium tier as its 'new' Asif sony's not had playstation now for going on a decade & started the PS2 classics initiative a long while ago before abruptly abandoning it they've had lots & lots of time lol
Not a fan of the 12 hour campaigns for exclusive collectibles, and having the expired campaign show on your screen after expiration. It feels exploitative to get people constantly engaged and feeling bad for missing a day of playing.
i chose poor.
not available on console.
no way to display trophy.
stuff hidden behind tiers.
worst 'value'
the games offered to buy with points are cheaper elsewhere.
issues signing up.
no available in some countries.
just because its new is not an excuse, PS has seen the competition so why do something so poor???
ok sony doesnt have a search engine to get free points, so that aspect wont be as good as MS. but it still lags behind elsewhere.
@commentlife wtf there is an expired campaign. How was anyone supposed to know about it? The app didn't even give a notification for it.
I like it, but it seems dead on arrival
@Milktastrophe That was never a worldwide thing, though.
Sucks i played a ps4 and ps5 game within the time limit and didnt unlock the banana
The quarry is 17500 points, seikero is 15000 points, nier automatictomato is 10000 points. 10 points to a dollar you're shelling out a little over $4000cdn to get games that are $30-$40 in store.
This is better than nothing but not by much.
I deleted the app, the collectibles seem to be rotating around 30fps. Unacceptable. I’ll stick with my Nectar card for super Sainsbury savings.
would be nice to know if it will be available in other countries soon, as it is not available rn in Israel/Norway
your better off doing microsoft rewards and buying PlayStation credit with that you dont even have to have an xbox to get points with that
They didn't call it a scheme this time.
Little bit of an annoyance. So, we all get that T-Rex for playing a PS4/PS5 game, and it was applied automatically. I thought that the 50 coin redeem would be automatically applied as well as all the others are, and I bought Inscription and received nothing. Could have been clearer.
Stars is fine. It’s something and that’s not nothing, but so far it’s barely more than nothing, which is sort of what I’d expect out of something free. I prefer both Nintendo and Xbox’s approach so far.
It was fun to get some digital crap just for signing in, but that cashback point system should be here BEFORE PS4 era... Now I have so huge backlog, that purchasing is pushed into corner... I didn't buy from PS Store for half a year... And there is nothing that is trying to convince me to purchase in distant future... sad... very sad...
@jrt87 Careful, Nintendo points expire after 12 months
Stars is a little too late for me. I used to be a big spender, several thousand a year, but now just £100. PS Extra and EA subscriptions are filling my gaming quota and losing the gaming industry loads. And something as gimmicky as Stars is not going to entice me back. In fact some of the challenges in Stars are environmentally unfriendly. Not good at all in this current climate.
And here's to subscriptions, they've got to be good for the industry, right?
All this distraction from what I believe to be a lack of original games to play. There was a time when I'd have 3 or 4 games I was waiting on or a dilemma of two releases close to each other and what to buy? Have we run out of ideas for new original games? Where are today's versions of silent hill, metal gear solid, the last of us? Original ground breaking games, not regurgitating the same stuff. I don't want a digital cat thank you.
Very, very, very poor.
You can't progress in "levels" unless you buy from the PlayStation Store. That alone makes this utter bollocks.
I buy most games physically, so that's me out on that one. I still have an extensive digital library, but that counts for nothing at the moment.
Ubisoft got it right with their Uplay points. You get xp for completing trophies and other in-game actions and some trophies carry points, levelling up gives points. Points can be exchanged for in-game items and unlocks or, 20% off ANY purchase on the store.
Sony missed an opportunity here.
In the case of “Hit Play /1994” I find it counterintuitive that “streaming” the game doesn’t count as “launching.”
With regard to Uncharted 4, players have to download the PS4 SKU. Why wouldn’t the Legacy of Thieves PS5 edition count?
Get it together SIE.
4% cash back wouldn’t be bad if digital games weren’t multiple times more expensive than physical games. As it is though I have zero points and will probably do so for the foreseeable future. I very rarely waste money on not being bothered to pop into a shop.
I’ll keep just getting £15 a month in Amazon vouchers to top up my wallet by doing the Microsoft rewards quizzes and searches. I started that recently to make my commute a little more interesting.
However, I do like the challenges and collectible rewards. But yes, they could be far more inventive. I have all the ones that didn’t ask me to spend money, and that’s the way it will stay. They are, obviously, not added value enough to “buy” through getting games I wouldn’t otherwise have purchased.
All in all, it’s free, so I’m not complaining. The collectibles are cool, and the challenges have the promise of adding value to the ecosystem just like the trophy system massively does (for me). I was hoping we could earn points through actually playing rather than paying. My dream would have been points for trophies but, unfortunately, shovelware games and the ability to play the same game on multiple free accounts, makes getting points for trophies difficult. No points for me I guess.
PlayStation need really lean into our desire to gain doubles.
Like double point weekends, or triple points when you preorder a game etc.
I do think adding an incentive to preorder digital games would be very smart.
Such a shame it is not available some countries including where I live.
It's long, long, long overdue, especially on the points back for purchase side of things, that didn't need any fancy framework it's just something a lot of companies (especially various physical game stores) do to keep customers happy and coming back to them. And something Sony should have introduced when they first started selling digital games... The money they have missed out on by not offering a rewards system to incentivise more purchases and develop a stronger relationship with the customer.
But also it's slightly overdue on the challenges front. More specifically, in the UK, as if we'd have got this a week earlier I'd be rolling in an absolute mountain of "rare or higher" trophies for simply playing Death Stranding normally and would be tier 3 in no time (whatever that means 😅) all without changing my gaming habits in any way to chase goals. As of now I only have 11 counted to Stars, out of the 30 rares I've got from Death Stranding already in a week, just because it launched late in Europe 😅
Damn so many people must have quit Death Stranding if "complete chapter two" and "complete your first standard order" are rare trophies 😂
only 33% made it beyond chapter 2 😶 (I guess they will never know you get power suits and vehicles that can carry a billion tonnes of cargo😂) for trophy hunters, or PS Stars boosters though, go play it now, it's really easy to get them for regular gameplay and progression. Or just play it because it's a really good game, like me.
@commentlife
12hr campaigns? What ones were those? I must have missed them but they are not showing anywhere for me (U.K.). I have 6 currently which were just for opening games from Extra and turning on my VR. 12hr limits sounds awful.
I can see the appeal of the missions as it makes you do tasks that you may have not done before but... this is Sony. If history tells us anything, if something is nothing moving quick enough for them, they will drop it fast.
I still think that the digital collectables where NFTs at one point (especially with the idea that there will be one item for the first person who Plats a certain game) but they did a U-Turn after the first announcement.
I have a bunch of trophies, but no points, and the only way I can see if getting points, is by buying games I don't want.
It's not costing me anything though, it's not hurting anyone, and it's not causing me any inconvenience, so "Meh".
Hopefully it improves, but if not I'll just forget about it and not be any worse off
So free service that you have to spend money to get anywhere. 10 points per dollar doesnt say how many points per tier and the tiers are temporary. Sounds like a con to me.
@Gh05tm4ch1n3
The “spend money to get anywhere” bit is otherwise know as a cash back system (equates to about 4% cash back).
This isn’t bad as a free reward, but unfortunately doesn’t count physical games, so useless to me. I’m not paying many times more on a game to get 4% back.
(e.g. Scarlet Nexus is £50 in the PSN store, yet I can get it for £15 at CEX, and then get £10 back. So digital is literally ten times more expensive for those who know they’ll never play it through more than once (most people))
To those throwing away money on digital purchases already however, I’m sure they’ll be pleased.
I am interested in the campaigns (for the same reason I’m interested in trophy campaigns as well as storied game campaigns generally). Unfortunately it looks like a way for them to just push certain game sales for the most part. It has good potential though.
@thefourfoldroot1 I think the 12 hour campaign was a reference to the banana collectible that was offered for only a single day, October 12, when the Stars program launched in Europe. For a couple of days afterward, the campaign and reward were still showing up in the app, but it was marked as expired. Very frustrating, as I played a game during the required timeframe, but apparently you needed to click Start on the campaign in the app to receive the reward.
Man, the trophy showcase or whatever it is called is so so so bad. It's like a JPEG or something made from Paint lol
@NateGoesLive I definitely think they'll do things like that.
So far I'm not really liking it. The collectibles are cool and I like the idea of those. But one thing that puts me off is that you see one you like, or want to collect them all, then it pushes us to boot up something we don't want. If I'm not earning coins for doing those too, then what's the point collecting them. They don't feel rewarding
The coins is the main problem for physial buyers as we don't get any. Therefore at the moment Nintendo is way ahead with a better system. Good for digital buyers, useless for physical.
It would be nice if campaigns were available outside of phones...
I said good as it is better than meh, but really not quite good yet. Anytime you get the ability to earn free money it is above meh. The biggest change that needs to happen is to move it directly to the ps5. I'd almost consider this the beta as they work out the kinks, see what people are striving for and adjust accordingly when it launches on the console itself.
@thefourfoldroot1 there was one on Friday in the NA version that was only a 12hr limit for a collectible, it auto enrolled you in it and showed in your landing screen that it had expired but there was no notification it was even a thing.
I wish it went off games you’ve played recently. I completed (and deleted) TLoU Pt 1 a few weeks ago and it doesn’t count towards my stats. But it gave me the VR reward when I haven’t even plugged it in for 2 years lol. V annoying.
today people can only complain about everything. Welcome and the 21st century.
It’s really interesting this generation how the largest game company in the world Sony is being the most tightest both purchasing cost wise and and playing catch up on certain services with the other two.
Clearly the massive success of the PS4 and probably not wanting to give anything away and tighter budgets have all contributed to this.
I guess we lucky they budget those big top end AAA games of theirs still.
But it will probably more interesting moving at some point to the next generation and seeing what happens. Those returns on investment for big budget AAA will definitely be under scrutiny at head office with the penny counters.
I think my biggest nit pick is in order to earn coins from games purchased you have to actually have an active subscription and for the most part it seems that they are trying to make you buy specific games only to get any kind of rewards. Not really great at this point and launching it with no integration on consoles seems odd it's not like that haven't been working on it all for months. It's quite a disjointed experience as it is now.
@BritneyfR_ee The VR one was for just playing any game.
@TommyNL We are not allowed to point out were Stars can better? Guess what ever Sony does it is awesome / perfect, right?
Buy Last of Us Part 1 for $70 and get 50 points. To cash in and say buy It Takes Two will take 10,000 points. Thats not good in my book. Yes, far better than nothing, but come on. Sony can do better.
@Jarobusa
To be fair, not including campaign challenges, It’s about 4% cash back, which isn’t bad (you seem to only be counting the 50 points given extra for the campaign challenge and not, strangely, the points you get for actually buying the game).
Still bull of course, because they give you nothing for physical purchases
I'm enjoying it so far besides the fact that MK11 won't register for that warrior challenge.
So... everything I've purchased digitally over the lifetime of my PS4 means absolutely ZERO. ***** Stupid Idea.
@3n7r0py So you’re saying they should backdate the points for nearly 10 years worth of purchases? That’s ridiculous, lol.
@Bentleyma I agree! But I would really appreciate it. Ha! 😜
I never buy digital games and yes i mean never.
@NateGoesLive They need to add points for physical games like Namco Bandai.
@Danloaded Same here. 😁👍
@Gh05tm4ch1n3 Nobody is forcing you to buy anything and its something versus nothing. I have a issue that its zero when you buy physical games.
If Sony really wanted some good will they should have backdated for every PS4/PS5 store purchase since i dunno the PS5 launched or something. Unrealistic and maybe unfair to expect? Sure but would have gave them some much needed good press.
Just spent $5 on some in game thing, gave me 53 points, which... that's cool I guess. Funny thing to me though is Hades is 6,250 points, and it's the only physical PS5 game I own.
Also, I'd donate my 53 points to anyone who doesn't have Hades. It's there with Castlevania 3 and Ocarina for me
@Jarobusa
Of course there is room for a lot of improvement. but when I say that it is a new program and that it still needs to be tinkered with, it is nonsense. because Microsoft has a similar program and that is better. (Gosh how could that be?) And if stars had been just as good as the xbox variant, Sony will copy it again. in short it is never good. Do you understand what I mean?
It's fine. It's free to join, and you get some points back for purchases which, as the article points out, is more than we were getting before. The collectibles are kinda whatever, but it's a neat idea. I dunno. It could be better, but it's not exactly doing any harm.
"Currently restricted to the PS App, with native support for the PS5 promised soon"
Well, that's me and about 80 million users out for now (as the PS app is awful)....
@Danloaded 💯 the Nintendo version is superior because it lets you redeem physical copies for points to use on any purchase even if it’s just a few dollars towards the purchase. If the same game is on Nintendo I’ll typically get it there unless it’s a sports game or drastically cheaper on Sony
I’ve just cancelled all my pre orders and will re-preorder to get the points. I’ve got enough for a £5 voucher already
I spent an evening trying to get the "achievements" to work, but items like playing a game or loading a specific game for the 1984 tasks were not working.
It was a frustrating experience and I realized I had wasted my evening looking up guides on how to get these things to work rather than just play games and have fun.
I'm going to ignore the service now, and try to have fun again.
They need to start offering a small number of points with every challenge otherwise people won't bother, plus some of the rewards are way too expensive.
Sekiro for 1500 is ridiculous, I'd rather just spend the £20 or whatever for the physical version.
What would make this really worthwhile is if they offered points for trophies, like 1 point for every trophy but 50 for a Platinum.
@commentlife I think they got a lot of backlash last time. There's a new 24 hour campaign today, but it was auto started and I got a notification from the app.
Edit: also I didn't even need to play a game, it just gave me the reward for nothing.
@Milktastrophe thanks for the head’s up!
