We live in an era where video game movies aren’t all instantly awful. Sonic the Hedgehog, for example, has become an enormous Box Office success story – and even Uncharted wasn’t bad. With the Super Mario Movie looking awesome also, this is clearly a golden age for adaptations of our favourite franchises. But back in the heady days of 2006, that simply wasn’t the case.
Video game movies were terrible back then. Everyone assumed the worst when Cristophe Gans announced his adaptation of Silent Hill starring Sean Bean and Radha Mitchell – but it turned out pretty good. In fact, for the longest time, it was the best video game movie around. Obviously, that was faint praise considering the competition, but it’s still an accolade it deserved.
While sequel Silent Hill Revelation was nowhere near as good, Gans has had over 15 years to lick his wounds and return to the storyboard – and he’s come up with Return to Silent Hill. This film is still in very early development – no cast has been confirmed yet, and filming is still a long way away – but the story will be based on Silent Hill 2, which is obviously getting a remake on PS5.
Details are light for now, but Gans explains that he wants to create something modern, while sticking true to the blueprints of the game series. There will be familiar monsters, including the iconic Pyramid Head, although the director added that he aims to surprise viewers as well. He seems pretty confident about the direction and storyline, so now it’s just a case of getting it made.
We suspect this won’t come out for a couple of years, but it’s officially out in the open now. Have you got the stomach for a new Silent Hill movie? Hide behind your popcorn in the comments section below.

The first one’s genuinely quite good. Probably still my favourite video game movie.
“In fact, for the longest time, it was the best video game movie around”
I think you mean it was the only good video game movie around - it’s arguably very much still the best!
And since you asked, Alien Isolation is the best video game based on a movie.
mler.
@kyleforrester87 Don't throw stones on me, but I also like Resident Evil movies (at least 1-4, didn't see rest yet). Maybe because I've only played RE2 disc 2 game. And also DOOM is very good movie. Final Fantasy (Spirits Within and Advent Children) are also not that bad...
Really enjoyed the first one & Sean bean was in it too 👍🏻 , the second was absolutely 💩
@BeerIsAwesome I read somewhere that Mr bean has been rejecting roles where his character dies ,how true this is i dont know ,but the poor guy has been through enough 😁
Radio… What’s going on with that radio?
📻💀
Great news! Loved the first movie personally, very atmospheric and very nice direction throughout with no obvious reliance on cheap jumpscares anywhere, unlike most mainstream modern horror trash. I have high hopes. At least it can't possibly get worse than the second movie.
Also, (insert Sean Bean reference here).
So much SH news. I was expecting an announcement of one game and maybe a pachinko machine. I think I’m getting spoiled with everything shown today.
@djlard I love your taste in movies! Have you seen Kingsglaive FF15 yet?
I heard it's very divisive, still need to watch it myself.
@djlard true, Resi Evil movies are not so bad, or the first one at least. And the Advent Children Directors Cut is really good!
@KidBoruto My wardrobe with 4000+ original dvd/bd/uhd says I maybe like movies. 🤣🤣🤣
No, didn't see Kingsglaive, must look at that...
Yessssss I loved the first Silent Hill movie! I didn't mind the second one, just didn't grab me as much. Hopefully the soundtrack is great, too!
Christophe Gans is a great director, really loved Brotherhood of the Wolf and Crying Freeman. The world also needs more Mark Decascos.
The first movie was great.
@djlard I'm unsure what country you live in, but the 4K Disc can be bought from Amazon.
$23 USD: https://www.amazon.com/Kingsglaive-Final-Fantasy-Blu-ray-Digital/dp/B08QRVLTCH
@KidBoruto Thanks. I rather search local shops. 🙂
@djlard That's fair, I wish I could afford to support "mom and pop shops".
@KidBoruto just because I globally hate megacorps, where they don't care about products. Rather support someone, who has passion for what he sells. It is also personal, because I was running own shop for 7 years...
@djlard Oh nice! Sounds like you had a fun time
@KidBoruto Yes, I loved it. Still am thinking about reopening it again.
Imo it's still the best video game movie. Uncharted sucked and so do the Sonic movies. Not seen the Mario one but it's Nintendo so not for me.
