PS5 stock is finally on the rise, and Sony is reaping the rewards big time. The new-gen system topped the US hardware charts for the second successive month in September 2022, dominating in both overall unit sales and revenue. In fact, the console enjoyed double-digit growth year-over-year, propelled by improved availability. The industry, as a whole, remains down compared to 2021, however, generating $4.1 billion in the period spanning 27th August through 1st October.
In terms of software, soccer sim FIFA 23 topped the league, narrowly beating Madden NFL 23 and NBA 2K23 – although the latter does not include digital sales. Splatoon 3 pipped The Last of Us: Part I, which did extremely well in fifth position considering the backlash to its price point. Perhaps even more impressive is that retro compilation TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection debuted in sixth place – extraordinary for an assembly of NES and arcade classics.
Evergreen first-party titles, like Horizon Forbidden West and Marvel’s Spider-Man, continue to sell well – and MLB The Show 22 has once again proven one of the not-so secret success stories in Sony’s arsenal. It’ll be fascinating to observe how God of War Ragnarok concludes the year, and whether PlayStation can keep enough stock on shelves through Christmas to dominate the all-important holiday spending period.

It makes you wonder.
All of the complaints people make about PlayStation, but it's never reflected in the numbers 🤷
@Shepherd_Tallon The majority of the market are people who want to play Fortnite, Call of Duty, Fifa and the occasional first party blockbuster that breaks into the zeitgeist. They are largely unaware of the micro-factors affecting the Playstation ecosystem and are uninterested in issues the hardcore base raise, such as diversity of experience in the first party catalogue or closures of studios due to a failure to meet lofty financial targets. The PlayStation brand is sturdy and built on the shoulders of a near-three decade long, largely successful run.
The more hardcore audience such as Push Square readers represent a minority in the market and are overwhelmingly more likely to have already picked up their consoles, so their grievances will have little to no effect (at least in the short term) on sales for the platform.
If you're enjoyment of your experience with PlayStation is dictated by their sales success, you have no reason to worry. If you are, however, an enthusiast gamer with a vested interest in a healthy gaming community and marketplace and your values and desired experiences are being threatened by increasingly profit-driven market moves, I can understand why you might have criticisms to voice - and a gaming news website for enthusiasts is probably a good place to do it.
@Shepherd_Tallon that’s because the internet is like bizarro world anything it says always turns out the opposite lol
Nice to see. As many of us have said argued, if Sony didn't have stock problems, it would have easily dominated hardware amd software sales. MS and to some extent Ninty got lucky.
@naruball Exactly right. Microsoft is really benefiting from PlayStation's stock woes.
@naruball Things definitely didn't go to plan. They were well-placed to break records, I think. The other factor in all this is that games like God of War should have been out long ago, but got delayed due to the pandemic, too.
Such a shame.
@get2sammyb @naruball Indeed. We often reflect on what might have been.
Then again, this generation might finally be about to kick off. There's still time for records to be broken.
Up to now It feels like Sony have been holding back too. Maybe they've been waiting for the stock issues to be resolved?
@get2sammyb A real shame, because you can't turn back time. The damage is done. In an alternate universe, the pandemic and the shortages never happened and ps5 + ps6 (as well as MS and Ninty consoles) had a very different performance.
The average gamer tends to buy what their friends are buying, so the ps5 never reached the heights it could. Perhaps even God of War Ragnarok was held back in terms of performance and release date.
@AK4tywill
Facts. Very good answer
@naruball
I like it that way, too much power for sony can be a bad thing. Glad they're on check. We get quality games for it.
Last of us remake will plummet for October NPD.
@Shad361 October being Halloween month and TLoU can easily be considered a Halloween game for October. Plus the huge increase in PS5 sales recently could help with TLoU sales. November and December might not sell as good but I think October it could do well still
They must be sending more stock. I actually saw a PS5 at my local Walmart the other day in the display case.
Welp full steam ahead with that Horizon remake I guess. 😂
surprised so many in the US like real football!
November's going to be the most interesting month for these charts. Switch has Pokemon and PS5 has GoW Ragnarok, both systems are likely going to do amazing over the holiday season.
That top 3 is embarrassing. Barf. 🤮 Swap them with 4, 5, and 6! 😉
But the ps5 is an underwhelming,under achieving console isnt it? It wont even play games in [email protected] in the right mind would want to pay for such an outdated and over rated bit of tech? I'm being sarcastic by the way...this is good news but wont stop the sony bashers..
@Northern_munkey I like the PS5 because it's the best PS4 that Sony has ever released.
@EVIL-C what’s the matter , jealous of american sports ?
@naruball you're exactly right and on top of everything you already said Microsoft produced a budget console that was easy to manufacture, to which people impatiently brought just to jump into "next gen".
@uptownsoul Wrong. Spider-Man was on the charts for MONTHS. True hits have staying power.
@uptownsoul give an example of an AAA game that was actually good that didn’t maintain it’s position In the top 10 for at least a few months. They have a gradual decline. Even Ratchet did this.
They don’t tank like this will outside the top 10, with a bunch of old games only as completion.
@Shad361 days gone
@Grumblevolcano and both those games will be fighting for second place behind the juggernaut that will be MW II. Maybe further back pending the promotions for Black Friday around FIFA, Madden and NBA 2K. Sonic Frontiers should sell very well too.
@ATaco For real. Two years in and I've only played one game I could only play on PS5 - two if you include Demon's Souls being graphically overhauled.
All the people arguing with me about how The Last of Us Part I won't sell well, where you at now?
Very common place now in American stores, seen a few pictures uploading stock having 5 or 6 in a security cabinet.
UK here always good most weeks from ShopTo. Hopefully now more and more will upgrade to PS5.
@CapGod I have to disagree. The ps4 easily dominated the previous generation and we still got amazing games at reasonable prices. Sony doesn't need competition to perform well.
@bpomber they will return as soon as it leaves the top 20. Most people are only interested in confirming their bias.
@Shepherd_Tallon It turns out internet whiners are quite the hypocrites. The horror.
