This opening movie for Star Ocean: The Divine Force feels like it's from another era entirely, but we're actually enjoying how unashamedly cheesy it is. Featuring a song from long-time Japanese rocker HYDE, the video splices scenes from the game together in an attempt to get you hyped.
Honestly, we're still not sure what to think of this latest instalment in the Star Ocean series. The demo — which is available to download now on PS5 and PS4 — doesn't make a great first impression, but the game does have some potential if the combat system evolves appropriately, and the storytelling comes together.
It's one we'll definitely have to play for ourselves before jumping to any conclusions. Fortunately, the release date isn't far off — The Divine Force launches in just under a week, on the 27th October.
What do you think of this opening movie? Travel back to the early 2000s in the comments section below.

Out of all the games launching this week and next week this will be the one I pick, I love B tier JRPGs and all this needs to get for me to pick it up is a 7/10 from reviewers! This trailer reminds me of the 1000s of Linkin Park anime remixes in the early youtube days, I love the cheesiness of this. 😂
It wouldn't be a Japanese rpg without a cheesy opening song ,they're great ,tales of zestiria being a particular favourite.
I think it's awesome. Play similarly to star ocean 4, plus I'm a massive star trek geek . Always about the hit and run gameplay. the skills tree is decent that choose how to play, what abilities and spells to learn and when to level stats. Character models look fine, having completed the demo can't wait for release next Wednesday
I was only saying the other day that… while I’ve never played any of these, I really like the look of this. Might not be a day one buy but I’ll definitely be picking it up at some point soon.
I feel like I probably already watched most f this as I "played" the demo. Played in quotes b/c I spent an hour watching 50 minutes of cut scenes and playing for only 10 minutes.
To be fair, I like long CG opening scenes in my jrpg, but the demo should have started after you start moving into the caves w/ your party. That's when I stopped playing b/c it was time to go cook dinner, wasn't ex the entire opening of the game in the demo. Probably good if the save are carries over, but I would have preferred just playing and watching the opening on YouTube like this.🤷
I'll probably still play it, but in a year or so at half price, I have a lot to play as it is, w/ Bayonetta next week, on pre-order 4 years ago.😝
Edit: OK so I watched the trailer, it was lined up on my PS5 when I turned it on, and my thoughts are,
SO:TDF Party like it's 2002 on a PS2 trailer > FFXVI emo boy band here we go again trailer
I was looking forward to it but the demo put me off. Big fan of a couple of old star ocean games. The intro were they’re getting shot up and stuff was so bad. The emptiness and art style felt in the environments were poor. Honestly, I think after Elden Ring’s environments, Star Ocean and Valkyrie felt very last Gen and very out dated.
@HeroYoshiko
Agreed. I was excited to buy it but then I played the demo on PS4. The game looks last gen and yet runs at such a low resolution that it was a blurry mess. The textures were all soupy, the trees/foliage looked terrible, the characters looked creepy and the performance was abysmal. I am planning to buy SO3 instead to get my SO fix.
@KaijuKaiser "character action game and Clive is the only playable character"
WAIT!? WHAT?! REALLY!?!? What the heck kind of mainline FF game is that then? Sounds more like Vagrant Story, which was fine for what it was, but it wasn't called FF8.
You completely blew my mind and now I need to go do research. If it's as you say it sounds like a FF game made to be watched on Youtube.😝
I mean, yeah sure, it will probably be better than 13 & 15 but it isn't a mainline FF game w/o a party to me. Oh well, I told myself I was done w/ FF after 13 anyway. And 15. One of these days I have to mean it.😁
Really liked the demo in all of it's cheesy goodness. I'm sure reviewers will be harsh on it, but I won't care.
@KaijuKaiser Very good point. I suppose my only response would be that the solo players just ignored those as mainline games? Which I know isn't a very good response but
I am downloading the demo, I been fan of Star Ocean since first departure on the PSP. I replayed it on the PS4.
I just feel like Tri Ace have been on a downslope and their last game showed its age. So I want to believe in this demo.
Cringe is the word
