Darkwood is a truly terrifying, top-down survival horror game set in a bizarre, Lovecraftian world where nothing is truly as it seems. The title has been rereleased on PS5 in the form of the Enhanced Version, and is available now.
It's hard to describe how deeply Darkwood can get under your skin, with the constant threat of the unknown oppressing you at all times. As you explore the titular woods in what was the former Soviet Bloc, you will encounter all kinds of bizarre characters in your search for supplies and precious, precious gasoline.
Because when night falls, and you barricade yourself once more in your cabin against the horrors that emerge in the darkness, that spluttering old generator and the light it allows is the only thing standing between you and the otherworldy denizens of the Darkwood. These sequences are virtually unrivalled in terms of tension and are legitimately horrifying, and to say too much more would spoil the surprise.
The Enhanced Version doesn't reinvent the wheel, adding 4K resolution and DualSense support, but the magic of Darkwood is in its simplicity. If you haven't already, and if you are a fan of thoughtful, intelligent horror that doesn't rely on jump scares to instil dread, then picking this one up is a no-brainer.
Are you looking for a spooky game to scare the pants off of you this Halloween? What do you think of Darkwood? Lock the doors, barricade the windows, and prepare yourself for what comes next in the comments section below.

For the love of god, play this game. Best survival horror experience of the last 20 years.
Came damn close to buying the 4 version other night; good thing I held off
This game is like Silent Hill mixed with Stalker but played in the camera angle of Hotline Miami.
Be sure to wear good headphones because the creepy sound design is great and necessary for survival - you will usually hear the threat before seeing it.
Is this a free upgrade for owners of the PS4 version?
Cool game yes, very interactive, spooky survival.
@jcboyer515 Not bad!
Smart of the devs to put the new version on sale rather than deal with Sony in regard to creating an upgrade path. I own it on PS4 and of course haven’t played it yet. But for $3 I’ll bite. If I do chose I could plat the game twice now.
