It's that time of the year once again — the new CoD is out, and it's selling like hot cakes. Yes, the UK's physical games chart has been dominated by Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, which is about as predictable as things come. It sits at number one, and the majority of those boxed copy sales are for PS5, commanding 53 per cent of the launch weekend total. With PS4's share at 18 per cent, Sony's platforms accounted for nearly three quarters of the UK's physical sales.
Elsewhere, FIFA 23 has been knocked off its perch and has to settle for the silver medal. Horizon Forbidden West has grappled back up to number four after falling to eighth last week. Gotham Knights has moved from second to fifth — also selling most of its copies on PS5. Finally, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga rounds things out at number 10, up a few positions from the previous week.
Here's the latest top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 29th October 2022

71% on playstation consoles 👀
Sony will be showing theses numbers to the cma .
I will never understand COD's appeal
Horizon forbidden West has to be over 10 million by now with it being bundled In almost every console.
@Neonix
Correct though that has changed now to FIFA 23 bundles.
Clever Sony marketing. You can have a PS5 but only bundled with a digital game.
Sony playing clever but very mean to gamers this generation.
Also when a game is bundled with a console, even though the game is digital it is counted as a physical game sale in the UK game charts.
The good ole Sony couldn’t be more cunning or clever, depends how you see it.
Or Nintendo, you can buy the console solo or with a bundled separate physical game and get £10 off and it’s physical so you can re sale the game.
And Sony can’t do this instead of forcing poor gamers and parents into buying a boxed console and game bundle so they can have a PS5 and the dam game being digital. So bad for consumers and to think last generation with the PS4 Sony were the consumer hero. See what power and Sony being at the top does to them.
I'm happy to see that the last of us is not on the list, cross fingers sony will understand we don't want re-release of a game 3 times.
And also to keep me going Xbox are just being super consumer friendly.
Sony so far this generation don’t deserve the loyalty and love they are getting from some customers.
Xbox wants to make 71% of the CoD console fanbase riot in the future, I see.
PlayStation absolutely owns the casual gamer fanbase who play yearly release online multiplayer games. I'm not sure making anything exclusive would draw them over to team green, or just cause people to storm Microsoft and burn it to the ground. These types are quite reactionary 😁
Plus it's more fuel for Sony's legal arguments. It's like Xbox is Burger King wanting to take ownership of all the Big Macs, Happy Meals and Chicken Nuggets 😅 ( I haven't eaten fast food for many many years, so this comment hopefully still makes sense in 2022)
@Neonix Too true. Got my PS5 as birthday present from the wife the previous Saturday and it came with a boxed copy forced by the retailer rather than Sony though. She keeps asking when you going to play the game I got you, yeah I'll get round to it I say.
@Dezzy70
The good ole Sony couldn’t be more cunning or clever, depends how you see it.
They're all at it. Microsoft sold a console with Halo Infinite and included the £400 from the console in the Halo sales total value/has generated $xxx millions in the financial reports 😂
@Smash41
Of course they are all at it a bit.
But Sony this generation seem to be constantly at it none stop in some way.
@Neonix The PC digital version is also available through Steam where it currently sits at Number #1 in the Top Sellers chart as I write this.
@Neonix "I'm pretty sure Horizon Forbidden West is up there due to the fact that PS5 consoles have only been available for purchase with HFW bundled in for a couple of months now."
Yeah, about that "fact". Not only has the ps5 being available for purchase on its own for several months, but now there is a Fifa bundle.
Just some actual facts.
@Dezzy70 definitely cunning if you love Nintendo and feel the opposite about Sony.
@naruball
My point they cleverly have the forced console bundle first HFW and Now FIFA 23 digital game downloaded.
That then reduces the amount of consoles available to buy solo on their own. Which sell out quickly, which then leaves only the bundle option.
So why don’t they just sell PS5 console on its own and let the customer decide if they want to buy a game and what game and physical.
Because Sony are being clever.
all i will say is if the % terms are similar to digital. definitely getting close to ps4 dropped
@Dezzy70 “Or Nintendo, you can buy the console solo or with a bundled separate physical game and get £10 off and it’s physical so you can re sale the game.”
My Switch Super Mario Odyssey edition definitely came with just a digital code. I’d be shocked if the other official bundles weren’t the same.
@Ravix pity you don't know that they are NOT going to make it exclusive it will always be on ps ,the takeover rubbish was never about that it was about Jim Ryan not wanting cod on gamepass and ps not having exclusives content anymore and that exclusive content would pull the casuals to game pass just like it pulls them To Sony now
He was offered 3 years parity but turned it down and said it wasnt long enough so in a few years time when gamepass has exclusive content thank Jim Ryan
Edit : oh and actually it helps microsoft by saying see ps would still sell cod even if there was exclusive dlc/weapons maps etc on Xbox they got the bigger numbers on sales
@Dezzy70 they have sold ps5 on its own. We have reports that Horizon bundles accounted for only half the sales in the UK. It's been pointed out several times and yet we still have the same discussion after all these months.
Bundles have existed for ages now and everyone does them. It's not that clever. If they were "clever", they would have had sold only bundles from the very beginning, since there was no doubt they'd sell instantly. Yet they didn't. Or, if they were even "cleverer", they would have bundled the consoles with games that haven't sold well at all, like Sackboy. Why didn't they, if they're so clever or even cunning?
Don’t forget this is physical though, where Xbox is very heavy digital in most places I think now. I’d be interested to see what the digital sales are for both consoles.
No suprise to see the 1st & 2nd placed game. Modern warfare 2 campaign imo was great. Forbidden west was excellent & nice to see it selling-even tho a few are from bundles. I know a lot of people who had no intention of playing forbidden west but have brought the forbidden west ps5 bundle & have completely loved the game.
@naruball
It’s cool, it’s just Sony being business clever but not very consumer friendly.
We all not it’s a a good business move, especially when the game bundled is digital only.
@naruball
One thing I can is Sony Studios is where my heart is with their amazing games.
Sony the company, don’t like them at all.
@Dezzy70 It looks like it was Nintendo that invented the Digital Code pack-in. I looked at the late gen PS4 packs and they had physical games, the RDR2 bundle, FIFA21 bundle and the Hits Bundle had physical copies of all 3 games.
The Switch bundles like Odyssey and Animal crossing are all digital codes.
@Neonix Your comments confirmed my suspicions that HFW would not be able to offer anything too different from HZD aside from variations. Much as I loved the first game and spent time in the world after completing all the story, side missions etc. I couldn't see HFW taking Aloy anywhere radically different. This got me thinking about the appeal of the Uncharted series in comparison. I wonder if perhaps the role of Dinobots and other carried over elements, like tribes perhaps, becomes a burden to the telling of a story, which Uncharted has the primary focus on. So sure, even if HFW has a different story and expanded environment, perhaps the story is little more than a thread for more of the same from the first game. Any positives the story might bring being diluted and weighed down by the time and attention on dealing with Dinobots
@Martsmall but if it was on gamepass, it might as well be exclusive 😅 because they are giving it away to subscribers. That is what could tempt people to team green for sure, because they won't have to buy an Xbox and each game so the switch is easier. That is Microsoft's intention, to kill off people buying big games on other platforms, and that is bad for the industry overall. Whereas Sony backing studios and getting new exclusive IPS drives creators to make interesting games.
Microsoft just wants to buy all the established IP's and do none of the hard yards. It could have backed studios to make their own exclusive IP's for the past x years, but it backed Quantum Break and that's about it away from its Halo/Forza/Gears part 1,2,3,4,5 etc
EA would be just as mad, as now their main rival for those type of FPS games (who already trounce them as it is) would be giving it away on gamepass while they try to charge 70 pounds for their alternative shooter.
@Dezzy70 - Microsoft are only being 'pro-consumer' (and I say that loosely) because they need to be in order to regain much of the goodwill they had during the Xbox 360 era, that they lost with the Xbox One, if they were the market leader, they'd be making a lot of the same decisions Sony is currently making, need an example? just remember it was Microsoft who initially turned down Crossplay during the Xbox 360/PS3 era because Xbox was the Market Leader and didn't need it, and people can say VR is a niche market all they want, but Microsoft abandoning VR after making such big claims and promises is still a bad look and not exactly Pro-Consumer, just because something is niche doesn't mean you shouldn't attempt to contribute to its growth, but Microsoft has always been the type to wait until someone else makes something popular and then jump in just to get a slice of the pie.
Who buys a physical copy of **this** game???
Anyways, this is a meaningless figure. Remember when Elden Ring supposedly didn’t sell on Xbox due to these same charts, only to have the publisher themselves report numbers and then being proportional to the install base?
Xbox users simply trend way more towards digital copies.
@ChrisDeku Microsoft introduced the digital code pack-in first. All the pack-in XB1 bundles like MCC, Halo 5, Gears 4, etc. had digital codes included. Even before that though there was stuff like digital Skyrim and Lego Star Wars III being a pack-in for Xbox 360 hard drives.
@naruball
Because they want Horizon charting, not Sackboy.
@JustPlainLoco this is true about any company, reason we should always push for all the 3 players to be on as even ground as possible and not ever try to defend any platforms global dominance of the market.
We all win when none of them win, we al lose when one of them loses.
@Grumblevolcano technically, Sega started it with the Master System having a digital game burnt into the systems internal memory.
@Ravix actually EA don't have a problem with it
In fact
https://www.trueachievements.com/n51214/microsoft-activision-acquisition-ea-battlefield
Does EA seem bothered at all ? No and they said they are fine with it to the Brazilian version of cma ( forgot what Thier called ) ,the ONLY company has had a problem with it is Sony
@uptownsoul
Absolutely.
I usually buy multiplatform on Xbox but I bought cod on the ps5 simply so I don't have to deal with PC players
@Tharsman according to Sony's last figures, 79% of their games sales were digital. So you could say PS gamers trend towards digital too.
@Martsmall I'm not going to read the article, but fair enough, I trust what you say to be true.
If I was at Microsoft I'd be pushing for it, if I were at Sony I'd be pushing against it. But on the middle ground, where I am, as I do not work for either, nor do I play CoD, I still lean to the side of it not being great for the industry or being completely fair business when it comes to regulation.
I'd much rather see Microsoft purchase or support smaller studios that are not already established behemoths, to support new IP's and drive everyone to make better games, instead of drive everyone to scrabble to buy all the established stuff up in a fight to survive and thrive
@Ravix the end of the day it's just business for both companies, Sony know how much they would lose by not having exclusive cod dlc etc and Microsoft know how much they would earn
@Dezzy70 In your head it is.... and all over every single place you post. Its really tiring to see you post the same hate filled spew several times in every thread. This is a thread about sales charts, if you haven't anything useful to say except spit your bile, then at least only post your poison once, its beyond annoying and is now just insulting, and making you look a bit 'special'. Bundles have been sold since the beginning of time and its yet another thing you blow our of proportion to try and prop up your ridiculous viewpoints, like the console needing a stand and a controller plugged in to pair it show Sony is evil. I genuinely think you need help....
No surprises that COD sells so well, and its widely known it sells most on PS - that's after all what the infighting is about!
I think a few might also buy on PS to avoid PC crossplay too, I can see a post above from Styles T suggesting he did, and I doubt he is the only one.
I believe crossplay PC/ Xbox is mandated which is why you cant disable it?
Either way the current sales are only confirming what was already known, they are an important contributor to revenues on PS.
I don't play COD, so I guess I don't have a stake!
@Titntin
Do you not have an option to turn crossplay off on PS versions?
I know the Xbox version does because someone posted it on PureXbox. But it is in the console system settings rather than game settings.
and yet again physical only game sales data is pointless when 80% of game sales are digital
Bayonetta 3 debuted in first!
You know, when you don't count the flocks of sheep that baa'd out for their CoD and football fleecing programs, oh, i'm sorry...'games'
@Serialsid that was their entirety, included games that are exclusively digital. You will have to go to individual publisher releases to compare how each of them does digital/physical. Example:
Source: https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/elden-ring-sales-uk/
Read that again: Xbox has a higher percentage of digital to physical sales than PC. When was the last time you saw anyone buy physical PC games?
More from that article:
PS still sold better, but just by 3 points (12 points if you count the PS4 version) despite the extreme low physical sale numbers on the UK, because that’s how much more Xbox tilts towards digital than PS.
@Tharsman one games sales does not make a compelling argument.
It would be very interesting to see the breakdown on this games first week in sales. Especially since Sony have said its the biggest launch of any COD game on their store.
@Serialsid it would be ideal to get more similar articles but most publishers tend to keep that data private. It is still a good pointer especially when we talking about one of the best selling games of the year. Much better data point than guessing, or trying to apply total platform sales (that include digital only games and DLC) to the actual trends of physical/digital.
@Ravix or perhaps it bolsters the Xbox argument that they have no incentive to remove it anyway. Certainly doesn't make much business sense for them to based on those numbers. No this is about no more PS exclusive content for the game in the future. That content will be on gamepass
@Tharsman you could also argue that its not a good yard stick to measure it by! An extremely highly rated game that was a juggernaut, that came at a time when xbox had nothing of note coming out and PS had several big games.
I doubt we'll ever know the true split, but I'm sure it would be interesting reading.
@Nobigwoo makes no business sense to dramatically hurt the opposition by removing a sizable chunk of loyal year on year customers from their ecosystem??? A little bit naive, no?
Microsoft's whole business model is pump money at everything at a huge loss until we are the only ones left standing.
Let's all look into Microsoft's past, shall we?
Microsoft was formally charged with constituting a market monopoly by making it difficult for users to install competing software and simultaneously making it difficult to uninstall the company's browser, Internet Explorer
🤔
@Serialsid I think you are looking at a different point than I was trying to state. What you just said at best would explain why there would be such a close match in unit sales, but it would never explain why so many Xbox users decide to go digital compared to PlayStation.
The volume of units moved alone makes it a very decent sample size to make some judgement calls as to how many players of a given platform prefer physical or digital.
LOOL idk whether this is good or bad news ! haha
Star Ocean not even charting in the top 10 is a shame, was hoping to see it somewhere after the top 5. Hopefully this isn't the last game we ever get from tri-Ace if they do go out of business
@Kairu Mario Kart is the go to game for new Switch owners. Happy for Nintendo, but it sucks for those of us who have been playing it since 2014….
@Kairu I have mostly moved on from the series, but it’s cool to play them for a few days after release and every now and then… Tho it’s hard to complain about 48 tracks for $24.99, I am ready for a new entry in the series. I am guessing this won’t happen till the next version of the Switch comes out.
