SEGA has announced what looks like an extensive slate of post-launch updates for Sonic Frontiers. The game, which released just a few weeks ago, will be receiving pretty substantial new content throughout 2023, and it'll all be free.
Three major updates are set to arrive next year, each bringing new modes and features to the divisive open zone platformer. You can see for yourself what's in store with this graphic:
The first update is set to add a jukebox, allowing you to listen to all the game's music, a photo mode for some custom snapshots, and "new challenge modes". Following that, we'll be getting an in-game event for Sonic's birthday, an "open zone challenge", and new Koco to collect. Finally, the third update seems the biggest; it's adding new playable characters to the game in addition to "new story".
Presumably, the extra playable characters will be Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, though details are slim on any of these post-launch updates. That said, it's encouraging that Sonic Team is going the extra mile for Frontiers. Some of these new additions will be most welcome.

Yes, playable Knuckles ftw!🤜🤛
This was genuinely one of my favourite games this year, a little rough around the edges but just very good fun to play. I'm not really sure how new Koco is meaningful as they're just kind of there but the playable characters and story is the thing I'm most looking forward to and I'll probably try the new challenges at the same time.
This is a lot of content for free.
Awesome!!! I hope Sonic Adventure 3 would feature playable characters too like in the past two Sonic Adventure games.
@scottdevine48 sonic frontiers is about as good as its gonna get , presuming another Adventure 3 is pushing it and wishful thinking unfortunately . keep dreaming , lol .
definitely shocked that they're adding playable characters tho , i still need to finish the game
I still want to play this after I'm done with Ragnarok.
Cool to see a lot of post launch support for the game.
One note though, does anyone actually use in-game jukebox modes!? The practice made sense pre-YouTube because there weren't easy ways to find/listen to tracks in games but now, that is definitely not the case.
I will be here for all of it! Bring it on!
Are you kidding me? Why weren't Knuckles and Co already implemented?
That afterthought DLC isn't going to be good, I'm sure about that.
It's a pity they rushed the release a next year release would have been way better for the game.
Fair play to them for making it free, I've seen stuff like this from paid DLC passes from others (mainly nintendo).
Wow! Wasn’t expecting that. Very excited for Knuckles Tails and Amy being playable. I really enjoyed this game and still working on the platinum…wonder if the dlc will come with extra trophies? Decent of Sega to make all 3 updates free..kudos to them an Sonic Team
Pudgy Sonic please
Well that's pretty awesome to hear.
Yay! I really loved the game, so new playable characters and stuff is a wonderful bonus!

Just have to hope Sega stays true to it. It's my favorite company of all-time but I don't always trust the people who call the shots there and they've messed up DLC more times than not. On paper, this seems like great post-launch support done right and I'm looking forward to it, new characters and story mostly, as I really enjoy the main game.
A good reason to go back to the game after the platinum! SEGA is back to being the coolest!
@carlos82 Story DLC is very much appreciated! I'll be buying Frontiers soon as I see it drop down to $20 New.
