After news circulated last week following a round of previews for God of War Ragnarok, developer Santa Monica Studio has now revealed the official graphics modes for PS5, PS4 Pro, and PS4. The team doesn't quite commit to the highs of 120 frames-per-second in its official infographic; instead, it says many modes will feature an unlocked frame rate.
The PS5, PS4 Pro, and PS4 graphics modes are as follows:
God of War Ragnarok PS5 Graphics Modes
Graphics Mode | Resolution | Frame Rate |
---|---|---|
Favour Quality | 2160p (native 4K) | 30fps target |
Favour Performance | 1440-2160p | 60fps target |
Favour Quality + HFR | 1800-2160p | 40fps target |
Favour Performance + HFR | 1440p | unlocked 60fps |
Favour Quality + HFR + VRR | 1800-2160p | unlocked 40fps |
Favour Performance + HFR + VRR | 1440p | unlocked 60fps |
HFR = High Frame Rate
VRR = Variable Refresh Rate
God of War Ragnarok PS4 Pro Graphics Modes
Graphics Mode | Resolution | Frame Rate |
---|---|---|
Favour Quality | 1440-1656p | 30fps target |
Favour Performance | 1080-1656p | unlocked 30fps |
God of War Ragnarok PS4 Graphics Mode
Graphics Mode | Resolution | Frame Rate |
---|---|---|
Standard | 1080p | 30fps target |

60 fps all day every day, boy
Nice!
Is 40 fps considered High Frame Rate? Or does that interpolate into 120 fps? (3 X 40)
Six! Damn, that's gonna be a long Digital Foundry video.
@ThaBEN probably will only be available on 120Hz screens
@RBMango
Preferably, yes. But it depends on the difference in graphical quality. E.g. does it still have ray-tracing and all those bells and whistles with that mode.
I want that 4K, so 30fps it is.
Though it is concerning how a ps4 game can't reach 60fps and 4K on a next gen console, no hope for PS5 only games having 60fps 4K either then. But the ps5 pro will probably fix that.
@ThaBEN I've been digging the 40 fps resolution mode in horizon and that's what I played ratchet on. It just gives you the resolution mode but feels smoother and has less input delay than the 30 fps modes (which alway feel really jittery when you pan the camera). I do play on a 120 hz, vrr suitable TV though.
@ThaBEN Yes 40fps only available on 120Hz monitors as you said 3 frames for each tick.
Although it sounds like a small upgrade from 30fps, 40fps is actually EXACTLY half way between 30fps and 60fps in terms of frame time. It feels a lot smoother than 30fps and for many is the sweet spot.
30fps - 0.033 frame time
40fps - 0.025 frame time
60fps - 0.016 frame time
I'll be trying the 40fps mode with VRR and if it's not smooth enough will move back to 60fps
@ThaBEN Maybe they should've called it "high refresh rate" rather than "high frame rate", 'cause I'm pretty sure it just means a 120Hz screen is required.
Anyway, that's the one I'm going with (with VRR on)
I'm not a techy at all. I have no idea what any of this means. Someone just tell me which mode I should use.
I'll go with performance, high frame rate and VRR.
40fps is a nice option but 60fps unlocked is where it's at. I played The Last Of Us Part 1 at 1440p with VRR and 60fps uncapped frame rate with gyro aiming on my LG C1 OLED and it was glorious! Can't wait to play God Of War!
Can you play 1440p 60fps on a regular 60hz tv or does it need to be 120hz?
Definitely a lot of choices. More than needed really but I'm looking forward to playing it next week!
N.i.c.e. thats good.thats a lot of graphics mode.everyone can enjoy the ones that they enjoy. Kratos the g.o.a.t 🐐 👑.another masterpiece coming.word up son
Quality VRR here.
40 40 40 40 40 4 the win
@UltimateOtaku91 Yes it is… while I love my PS5 it often feels like a PS4 Pro Ultra…
Let’s hope it’s not true down the line and the fact that have to take PS4 into account with the engine prevent them from optimizing wizardry…
My head hurts...
Performace or quality+performance (40fps) for me, more tempted to try out the latter to be honest.
Preloaded and ready to go! Definitely going for unlocked performance mode!
60 FPS for me, can't wait!!!!
Win win everyone should be happy to play it whichever way they want
40 fps HFR nearly native 4K will do me just fine
Just got to love the LG C2.
So 120fps is the unlocked 60fps modes? Pretty confusing. Just purchased a c2 so interested to know, as I don't see a 120fps mode in the table and the text doesn't make it 100% clear.
Not buying it but Favor Quality or the best performance mode would be my stuff.
@DTfeartheBEARD Same plan here, gotta have that 60 fps!
All these options kind of makes me glad I don't have a 120hz TV.
I bought a 4k tv, I'm playing 4k, fps be what it is. I don't play 2D fighters.
Who knows, by the time I get the game maybe they'll have added a few more options. Don't laugh, you know it may happen. Get ready for the GoW:R update-a-day articles for the 2 weeks after release. 😂
@Sakai HFR is 120 mode mate
@bremkat35 thanks. I really enjoyed dmc5 at 120fps with vrr so will try it out in god of war when I get it next year
60fps for me.
I've been playing the 2018 game (at 60fps on PS5) in preparation for this... God Damn, it's still absolutely stunning! I'd be happy with more of the same. Can hardly wait.
... But I'll have to. My son has bagged it as a birthday present the day after launch, so he gets first go. 😭
@KidBoruto Yeah, 60fps uncapped is so smooth with VRR. 1440p already looks great. No way would I choose 4K 30fps over 1440p 60fps.
If "Favour Performance" does not dip under 1440P that is the ticket.
@UltimateOtaku91 agree, this lack of 40K 60FPS is disappointing given we are barely into a new console generation. I'm wondering if optimization will help in the coming years.
This is why I don't like PC gaming - I'm too stupid to understand which settings I need so I want the console to make decisions for me.
I have a 4k HDR telly - but a cheap one (no idea about VRR). What do I go for?
Favour Quality + HFR + VRR all the way!
Really pleased that these are features available at launch. Pre-ordered Horizon Forbidden West and the updates didn't come out until a fair bit after release.
Excited to play this but definitely holding off until it has been out for a bit longer for any bugs to be ironed out.
Seeing as unlocked 60 is at 1440p, then HFR with VRR enabled is a no brainer for me!
Favour performance will likely be my mode. Especially because it's dynamic 4K. 1440P/4K really isn't that much of a difference unless you're sitting 6 inches from the screen. My TV is only 4K/60hz, my computer monitor is 144hz/1080p. So if I want unlocked, I can play on monitor. But with my TV, dynamic 4k/60 FPS all the way. I promise you'll have to be up close & looking at every detail to notice the difference between dynamic & native.
@Ooccoo_Jr It might not have VRR in that case so maybe opt for the locked 60 performance mode
@JB_Whiting Cheers, as first response I am going with your suggestion. Although I am pretty sure it will look amazing whatever option!
Native 4K for me when I get round to playing it in about 5 years time.
@Sakai Essentially there is no 120 fps mode. The reason they have laid the table out like this is to not overstate what its capable of. With your TV you could try the unlocked modes as we all do and see what you get however based on how this is stated, do not expect you will get near 120 fps
I am most interested in seeing what the High Quality+HFR +VRR unlocked mode actually runs at.
However, the great unknown with all of these modes is what else is being lost or gained in terms of visual fidelity aside from framerate and resolution. I think that will be the ultimate determinate I look at in choosing.
The 30-fps option is absolutely a no go for a ps4 game though.
Quality+HFR+VRR at 40fps for me 🙂.
Quality, HFR and VRR for me all the way.
This is wrong..ps5 doesn’t offer 1440p with VRR yet
@UltimateOtaku91 Totally agree! I know everyone’s set up is different but non 4K content for my setup is so blurry I can’t stand it. The 30 FPS is much preferred than sub 4K native content at this point.
I am also getting concerned that a cross gen game can’t hit 4K 60FPS and there isn’t even ray tracing.
I hope the drive to reach 60 FPS doesn’t keep us from getting 4K ray tracing because they need 60 fps at the sacrifice of everything else. I’d much rather have native 4K ray tracing at 30 FPS than 1440p, no ray tracing and 60 FPS, that is basically back to the PS4 Pro days.
@jrt87 it says graphics mode VRR at 1440p..there is no unlocked frame rate at 1440p yet..so it’s wrong
@jrt87 I am seeing this everywhere so I’m assuming it’s not wrong but ps5 will not let you enable VRR in 1440p
Look at that 60 fps for a game that looks miles better than the recent two unoptimized messes. I'll probably stick with 40fps mode since I have a tv for it. You'd be surprised how huge of a difference that is from 30.
Will almost certainly start at Favor Quality + HFR + VRR @40fps unlocked - feels like the fewest compromises. You need the TV to pull that off, though.
I have a 120mhz TV (with VRR finally patched in - thanks, Sony!), and the difference between 30 and 40 is big enough to feel incredibly responsive. You can still feel the difference going to 60fps, but it usually feels like a smaller difference. A lot depends on the visual quality hit between 40 and 60, but unlocked with a target of 40 ought to work really well.
Will be interested in the inevitable comparisons from Digital Foundry, to see how well it handles unlocked frame rates and what the visual difference really is. I've seen 1080p that looked darn good, and 4k that wasn't that impressive - so much is in the details (literally).
@bpomber I'd go with "Favor performance" (target 60 fps). But you might like it differently, so I suggest watching Digital Foundry's review on Youtube.
@Art_Vandelay Thanks! I'll look into that before I start to play it.
Yassss queen! Hope these options will be the new normal for AAA games in the future. I'll be playing in Favour Quality + HFR + VRR= 40 FPS Unlocked. Sweet!
Guess it's nice to have options, although when I turn my PS5 on rather than my PC, it's usually because I want to settle back on the couch, without having to think or figure out what mode suits me best. Consoles should be about ease of access after all. With that being said, just a performance or a res mode would of sufficed for me.
@jrt87 ok that makes sense thanks
What? The PS5 can manage such things??? 60FPS and you are not kidding?
@ORO_ERICIUS yes it can if you own a PS5,plan to buy God of War Ragnarok and also have a 4K 120hz TV there is an option that you can play GoWR up to 90FPS according to Digital Foundry.
@MisterXpoSay he was being sarcastic because of games like Gotham knights & a Plague tale reqium lol
@Would_you_kindly sadly yes . High five!
@DTfeartheBEARD Still such a shame that PS5 games aren't capable of hitting 4K 60 FPS yet.
Maybe once the Unreal Engine 5 games are full steam ahead that will change?
I honestly can't tell the difference between 1440p upscaled and native 4k.
I'm not sure about that because UE5 seems demanding. Most games running on UE5 will probably run at 30-40fps. But I could be wrong about that.
I'd like the option to have ray tracing and 60fps and not have to choose one or the other. Mabey a PS5 Pro will fix that?
At the end of the day, I can't complain. For $500 the PS5 & Series X are much more capable than I could have imagined. A big upgrade from my PS4 Pro & Xbox One X, that's for sure...
Stayed up late to play tonight... Confused... My lg c1 tells me it's hitting 86-88fps in performance mode with high frame rate mode on. When I turn on quality mode with high frame rate on it tells me its running at 118fps?
