God of War Ragnarok is now in the hands of players, and sooner or later they'll get to meet the All-Father himself. As we knew before release, Odin shows his face in this epic sequel, and he's played by American actor Richard Schiff. Most famous for his role as Toby Ziegler in The West Wing, casting the performer in Ragnarok wasn't easy — but his son played a big part in making it happen.
In an interview with Game Informer, director Eric Williams speaks about the team's struggle to find the right Odin, imagining that getting Richard Schiff was a pipe dream. "We didn’t think he would even take the call. He doesn't care about video games," Williams says, recalling the team eventually decided to give him a call to see what would happen. "So Richard is in the car with his son, who's a big God of War fan, and he asked his son, 'Do you know what this God of War thing is?' And his son was like, 'Just say yes. It doesn't matter what it is, just say yes.'"
Schiff's son, Gus, then went and wrote down a summary of the previous game for the actor, to give him some reference of what he'd be getting into if he took the gig. When he then met with Williams at Santa Monica Studio, he agreed to play Odin.
It's a neat anecdote, and we're glad it happened — no spoilers, but the performance is excellent. The acting and writing in general is very strong in Ragnarok, and that's partly thanks to netting the right talent. Cheers, Gus Schiff.
We imagine he'll be playing the new game along with the rest of us, so if he — or anyone — needs a helping hand, there's always our huge God of War Ragnarok guide. What do you think of the performances in Ragnarok so far? Have you met Odin yet? No spoilers please in the comments section below.

I've only played the first 4-5 hours but so far the acting, and writing, is absolutely magnificent. Though frankly so is just about everything else.
Weekend can't come soon enough... but out again tonight. Why did I have to be sociable all of a sudden just as GOW:R came out. lol
He's fantastic as Odin, great casting.
Awesome casting, as soon as he entered the scene for the first time you could just feel his performance owning the "room". I believe that sort of energy was needed for somebody of Odin status.
Fine casting for sure! Also remember him in 2nd Jurassic Park movie...really didn't deserve the fate his character got in that!😱
He is awesome as Odin. He can be scary without showing off and at the same time he has quite some funny scenes. Amazing casting once again
He’s great but it did take me out of the moment a bit as I was sat there going “ ‘kin hell it’s Toby Ziegler”
God Of War. Changing parent-son relationships since 2018.
@Segafodder Same here, I spent the first 30secs or so wondering how on earth they'd got him as I'd read he is quite serious when it comes to taking parts. Awesome actor, he was easily my favourite in West Wing so I can't wait to see more of him in the game.
The whole cast is incredible. They really killed it.
Never watched West Wing but I liked him in Ballers. Wonder if I'll make the connection? Maybe after reading this but probably not.
I may hold off on GoW:R until after GoW Pt 1 releases. Laugh now, but you'll be paying $70 for it later. 😉
