Bloody hell, it took some time, but we finally have a release date for the long-awaited PS5 version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the updated RPG will launch on the 14th December, and reiterates that those who already own the game on PS4 can upgrade on PS5 for free.
A physical edition of the 'next-gen' title will be released at a later, currently unconfirmed date.
We still don't have any concrete details on what the current-gen version will bring to the table, but don't worry: it sounds like all of our most important queries will be answered soon. The developer says that it'll be hosting a livestream next week, which will include gameplay and additional information. Something to look forward to, then.
Honestly, though, we're just happy to see this PS5 edition not get pushed back again. Will you be revisiting The Witcher 3 just in time for Christmas? Saddle up in the comments section below.

Well, there go my Christmas gaming plans.
Yesssss finally!!! I may delay getting Callisto Protocol and a few other games whilst I replay this!
Those who own the base PS4 game, gonna get the PS5 Goty as well?
Well now i need to find time to play this now and cyberpunk. I have to finish gotham knights after i finish ragnarok...
Oh no... Bye bye life. Haha. Hopefully we can see some huge improvements, already owned it on the Xbox, but as I have a PS5, bought it a while back again, I'm ready!
Hopefully they've completely rebuilt the combat from the ground up.
Perfect birthday gift for me then
How different can this be? I'm too hyped for this for very little reason. I'm expecting more than graphical and performance improvements just because of how long it took them π§
Hell yeah. I'm so excited for this. Planning on it to be my 200th plat.
@Cideco you'll get the complete edition I assume. If not, its literally like Β£5
Hopefully Geralt's piles will have been cured by then - he does seem to be in pain when he's walking around.
@theMEGAniggle it will be the same game but a bit shinier & faster loading (maybe a fps boost) lol
Oh yes! Can't argue with free π
Awesome. I'd rather replay that than spend $70 on God of War R. I'll hold off on the new God of War until a price drop.
Ideally getting a PS5 in June, when I graduate from medical school. I've also never played the witcher 3, despite it looking truly wonderful. I think I've chosen the first game I'm going to be playing on my brand new console next year...
Please increase the text size
@PlayStationGamer3919 Doesn't look like it. The press release says that a physical edition date will be given after the digital launch.
From the discourse I see I think people are getting way to excited for this release. This won't be a remaster, the game will be exactly the same just with 60 fps and maybe some better lighting/shadows, kinda like the PC version.
Does it count for those that have the physical edition on PS4?
Grabbed the goty complete edition of this last year for a cheap 5 or Β£7 on a PS store sale just for this next gen remaster. Been wanting to check it out for a while now and this now seems like the ideal time to do so. Backlog isn't happy about it tho
One of my favourite games of all time! Wish I could go back and hearts of stone for the first time, best dlc ever!
@Athrum if itβs a smooth 60 Iβm excited for that. It was pretty choppy and buggy when first came out so if can get a fast loading smooth experience then Iβm in to replay.
this will be the perfect bridge between finishing GOW and waiting for all the amazing games coming in February can't wait to play again
@Athrum Going by reports it will be 60fps, have a 4K mode, Ray Tracing, better loading and far better textures and character models. Of course none of this is confirmed but i doubt its just 60fps only when a simple patch to the PS4 version could do that, the fact its taking so long clearly means it has more going for it.
So another announcement about an announcement?
@Milktastrophe I know but don't think it'd happen. Witcher 3 had everything right except combat, it was so average. Coming from Bloodborne's superior inherent FromSoft combat and even Fallout 4's crazy fun gunplay in 2015, Witcher 3 just felt the weakest.
@Sora420 that whole HUD is so out of place. Cyberpunk's HUD is so fitting.
@Would_you_kindly thats like 99% what I'm expecting but why has it taken them so long to do that. Why y y y
Also, I really like TW3 combat. EVeryone and their mama sh*ts on the combat but I really like the style, ease and flow of it
@ShogunRok You getting close to an even dozen playthrus of TW3 yet? π
My kid has put off playing this until the PS5 update - we own it on PS4 from back when the Complete Ed went on sale for $15 - but I think once was enough for me, I am SO BEHIND on gaming.
@theMEGAniggle probably just not been their main priority as they aren't charging for the update & they've had the collosal F up that was cyberpunk 2077 to fix aswell as the expansions & other projects they have in the works
I rarely replay a game these days, too much options and backlog, but I'm very tempted to do my 3rd Witcher run. I hope they bring a independent trophy list, it would be a good incentive. To this day I consider The Witcher 3 the very best game in the PS4 era.
Looking forward to this. I bought The Witcher 3: Game of Year Edition along time ago on sale on PS store and never played it. Iβve held off ever since a PS5 version was rumoured hoping itβd be a free update. Now itβs here (almost) I canβt wait to sink some time into it and hopefully not be disappointed.
@Would_you_kindly yeah but why couldn't they leave it to another team while they worked on their new IPs and DLC for CP77. I'm just very impatient. Since the day I heard about this PS5 version, I set aside my copy and its been like 2 years πππ
Damn like a day after FF Crisis Core? And not to mention Callisto Protocol early Dec, these past months and these upcoming ones have been drowning me in games. I can't keep up at all
Genuinely canβt wait to play this again, Iβm unreasonably more excited for this than basically anything most of the year.
@KaijuKaiser Time and a lack of it.
The sad part with gaming is that when you're young, you have all the time in the world but no money to buy the games you want. When you're older, you have responsibilities that take your time regardless that you have all the money to buy the games you want.
@Athrum and whats wrong with that haha
My biggest question is will we be able to transfer PS4 game save to PS5?
@AstraeaV this is how I consume most my content at work. So I am grateful for this
@PSX1994 same boat as me pal. I even got about 10 hours in
I am excited for some more UI accessibility options.
@PlayStationGamer3919 They probably wont make one, similar to how they did it with the PS5's Cyberpunk. I wish they would though
Only played through the game - inc both expansions - once, but that was several years ago so canβt wait for this! Question isβ¦can I finish GoW Ragnarok in a month? π€
So much for "soon" one month ain't soon
@Sora420 also make looting less annoying!
Freaking awesome. I bought the complete edition last year for the update. I've almost caved a few times and played it after clearing up my backlog. Glad my first playthrough will be at 60fps π
@Milktastrophe
Nothing wrong with the combat. What issues did you have?
@rjejr Genuinely think this will be my ninth or tenth playthrough, so we'll be getting there!
@ShogunRok Maybe by the time a PSVR2 version releases. π Enjoy. π
Is just like to add that if this free upgrade is all I hope it is then Iβll officially have forgiven CDPR for the Cyberpunk debacle. The fact itβs free and will include all the DLC I never bought is a big bonus. When considered along with the current state of Cyberpunk, itβs hopefully time to be excited again by this company π€
@ShogunRok same, given that this is likely the opus and last great project that will have come from this DEV. It's sad that significant success often turns creators into corporate profiteering scum overnight.
I'm stoked to play it again and have put off doing so for this update, that was initially slated for what like 2 years ago now? lol.
Gonna replay it for the very first time π
@Athrum
That's all I'm expecting. I've only played on my 970 PC and it was fine but needed a bit more with hairworks and all that stuff.
I would like them to clean up the combat but if not I'll deal. I only played a bit on the PC so it'll basically be starting fresh.
@KaijuKaiser
Could you elaborate on the awful gameplay? If you didn't like playing what is, by most, considered the Gold Standard for an action RPG what did not click with you?
I guess we'll see what's new with this one beyond the graphics. My second playthrough with all of the DLC was so meticulously complete that I'm not sure how much fun I'd have going a third round. Especially after putting in about 350 hours into the game.
@ShogunRok I'm going to need another vacation ugh lol. I can't wait.
Yes! I can't wait to blow out candles when I try to loot stuff again.
@KaijuKaiser
I guess there have been other games that have come out since that have improved on the formula. IE: Ghost of Tsushima, Elden Ring, or maybe Assassin's Creed Origins so The Witcher has lost a bit of luster. But at the time this game was new very few people thought that this combat was terrible.
Just now skimming through some old reviews on Metacritic I saw many accolades for the great combat.
Sure, some of the websites that post their reviews days after new games come out so that they can give a negative review for clicks said that the combat was boring and sluggish but this was not the general consensus on the game at the time.
Anyway, this game was the game everything was compared to for a long time.
@ShogunRok maybe even New Years too hahaha
This is exciting news, but i am most excited for the first one being remade. That needs it really bad and is a smart remake. This free update sure is great news for the holidays tho.
Can't wait. Been holding off, as I found the PS4 version pretty janky. Hopefully there are some tweaks to the combat engine, but I doubt it
So close to God Of War? What the hell am I supposed to do with my time now?! You evil b*stards!
@grapetrap seems kind of unfair to compare the witcher's gameplay to elden ring or the souls games, they have very different focuses. Witchers primary concern is clearly story and atmosphere, the souls games favours combat mechanics.
@BranJ0 You have made a good choice.
@Puketapu worst load times of any PS4 game. This will be my 4th play through and hopefully a 3rd Platinum as the base game and GOTY editions each has its own Platinum trophy.
gotta...resist...playing this game for the 1000th time...
Iβm finna cry π I love this game!
@Milktastrophe nothing has been rebuilt. Its basically a graphical enchancement. Don't expect too many changes
Improved loading times will make this a lot more playable. I had just started my Death March playthrough, so might pick this back up after the current gen version drops.
I liked the world and characters etc, but the combat felt like there was no weight to it and put me off. It doesnβt hold a candle to From Software games but Iβm definitely going to give it another go when PS5 update arrives (assuming it 60fps and at least 1440p with quick loading).
if now they would extend the cross save function... sunk so many hours into it on Switch and would love to do a new game+ on PS5, I have no time for a fresh start anymore...
I stopped playing this just because of the load times, some of the worst I've seen in a game. so thankfully my main issue is being fixed.
@Balosi
I cannot believe this is what you got out of my comment. I was trying to explain to someone else, that at the time and for a long while after, The Witcher 3 was considered a great action RPG and was used as a comparison to many games that came out after.
I was then saying that there have been a few games that have come out since that could now be the game that we all hold new action RPGs up to for comparison.
One such game is Elden Ring (but I did mention others). There probably will not be any similar games over the next few years that do not get directly compared to Elden Ring. I was not comparing combat from one game to another at all. Although, in an oversimplified way, they both involve rolling around and avoiding attacks until you get an opening.
All this because people were complaining that the combat in The Witcher 3 was bad/trash and I was trying to get specifics as to why they thought that way. Instead of giving me a real answer they just picked apart my points instead.
So ya...I've had to reiterate and re-explain but I still don't know why they consider The Witcher 3 to have bad combat when most things I read say otherwise.
Maybe these folks are playing The Witcher 3 on easy and all you need to do is swing either of your swords by mashing one button. Maybe they forgot about using signs and potions to gain the upper hand and keep getting killed. Maybe they didn't do their investigation correctly and did not go in properly prepared. But my suspicion is that they just like trashing CD Project Red because it's the cool thing to do since Cyberpunk 2077.
I won't be playing this for awhile, trying to beat God of War 2 in time for Callisto Protocol and Crisis Core FF7. Those two games will keep me busy as hell until January.
Regardless though, happy we finally have a confirmed date!
@Athrum 60fps and better lighting? that's just what I'm looking for! π l platinumed this game in Dec 2015 and loved it, only thing missing for me was 60fps. also there's some new content connected to the netflix show, so I'm hooked lined and sinked π and you can't complain about the price π
