The first 18 minutes of gameplay have from EA’s upcoming Dead Space remake have been published by IGN, and it’s looking like a remarkable upgrade from the PS3 original. While this opening is largely identical to the 2008 original, there are some minor tweaks that long-time fans will notice. Protagonist Isaac, for example, spends a few seconds building the Plasma Cutter – rather than simply picking it up from a workbench.
Here’s the first 18 minutes of the remake, as published in 4K at 60 frames-per-second by IGN:
And if you wanted a point of comparison, here’s footage from the PS3 original. As you can see, it’s largely identical in terms of encounters and level design, but it obviously looks incredible on modern hardware:
The final game will have other alterations, such as full control in the zero-gravity sequences, which will dramatically change the overall gameplay flow. But it looks like this is making adjustments in all the right areas, while still maintaining the spirit and atmosphere of the original. Unbelievably, it’s due out next month – and we’re looking forward to putting it through its paces.

This is how a remake should be. Looks fantastic and staying true to the original. I have played the game so many times and yet I am still super excited for it.
Also big fan of the new light effects they are using. Makes it look even more creepy.
Really excited, I hope they change enemy locations, to spice things up.
OH MY LORD. That Plasma Cutter scene
Why isn't this remake getting the same scrutiny as The Last of Us? It doesn't seem entirely necessary to me.
Man I'm super hyped for this. Love Dead Space so much.
I does what a good remake should do. It's evokes all the same feelings as the original, with an added bit of nostalgia. And with our rose tinted glasses looks kinda like we remember it. But our brains lie, and going back to look at PS3/X360 it's a HUGE upgrade. Hopefully the QoL elements and gameplay all hold up.
Looking good so far.
@Hundred_Hand_Slap I'd say because the original Dead Space released in 2008 as opposed to 2013 for TLoU - which also got a PS4 remaster a year later. The Dead Space series on the other hand has been largely abandoned since the third game came out in 2013
Why can't they make games like this anymore? Games with some weight to them, great story, gameplay, sound design, etc.
Hogwarts is coming out and that looks one in a million at least
will play it on EAplay in a year
@Hundred_Hand_Slap Dead Space has been dormant since 2013. The Last of Us has been rereleased twice since 2013. Familiarity breeds contempt. I do feel The Last of Us Part 1 has received a lot of unwarranted hate from entitled gamers though.
Just playing through the original again on the 360. Honestly, and not with ‘nostalgia eyes’ so much better that Callisto P. Looking forward to the remake.
@CRASH64 entitled gamers? So if you dont like having the same game recycled at premium prices every couple of years and voice your discontent that makes you entitled? Miffed yes indeed,entitled no..
@BoldAndBrash The are plenty of great linear Single player examples with amazing presentation that have come out this gen. Guardians of the Galaxy, Plague Tale/Requiem, Gow Ragnarok, Callisto Protocol, Kena, RE Village...I could go on.
@Hundred_Hand_Slap
Nobody scrutinized the FIRST Last of Us remaster (it was the SECOND remaster that clearly was not needed). So why would they scrutinize the FIRST Dead Space remaster. How can you even compare the two.
@GuttyYZ
Guardians has many issues, but it's fun. Callisto a bit of a disappointment. The rest except for GOW doesn't even get anywhere near the quality of Dead Space, I'm sorry.
All decent games that I enjoy, but still don't have the edge.
Best comparison is how Assasins Creed 1 had a world that felt alive, but then you play one of the new ones and they're empty, play like crap, have impactless combat and the NPC's say one stupid line on repeat, because they couldn't be bother to make the worlds feel more alive
@IslandLogic
Last of Us part 1 wasn't a remaster, but a remake. People were already on the TLOU hate bandwagon, the price was ridiculous and this situation is something else.
We've been begging for a new Dead Space since PS3. Ea was stupid enough to ditch Visceral. It was hopeless, so this INCREDIBLE looking remake is a breath of fresh air in a generation where most games are even worth getting a next gen console for, because they're all crossgen games anyway
@pyrrhic_victory yes, when you look at the screen shots of TLoU PS3 vs PS5, the difference is huge. But having already remastered the game on PS4/PS4 Pro made the differences seem less noticeable. If the PS4 Remaster didn’t exist, the PS5 remake would have been received much better I think.
The legend is back.cant wait to play this masterpiece again with better graphics.dead space remake is gonna be a hit again.word up son
Will we finally see Isaac Clarke in Fortnite? 😁
@Hundred_Hand_Slap Well if in a couple of years they remaster this remake (and charge full price) then I will happily be in the front lines of the hate squad. As of now this looks incredible and is 100% warranted!
@BoldAndBrash yeah unfortunately they would never make a game like this today- not in a million years. It's all Fortnite and Roblox now.
Looks beautiful. That said, the OG still holds up very well - damn, what a game. Can't wait to revisit USG Ishimura soon.
After calisto, I'm definitely ready for this. Just a shame that game couldn't get anywhere near this in terms of everything. Already sold it. Haha
Looks amazing! I just want a 60fps performance mode and gyro aiming controls for PS5! Callisto Protocol, to my surprise, has gyro, and the game is much more enjoyable with that and 60fps performance.
Too much like dead space 6/10
While I think Calisto protocol looks is s***, so don't get me wrong here when I say this, but I think the hype for this game is based heavily on rose tinted memories just like the callisto bomb. Much of what callisto brought and failed with did in fact originate from this series. The enemies spawning out of thin air directly behind you (which we see in this gameplay clip lmfao), the inability to turn around adequately or even realistically to face those magic teleporting enemies that all look identical, the extreme linearity, the shallow story, the not scary cheap jump scares, the one note combat, etc.
While yes callisto is trash and honestly showed as such prior to release even; I think part of that aside from its completely broken design has origins in simpler times of gaming. A time when games were largely restricted by hardware of the time to be linear and simple. However, dead spaces controls are just as garbage as Callisto. Callisto was just designed with the idiotic idea that somehow you could add melee to such clunky movement and make it work without updating or adding design improvements to movement alongside that decision .
I think when you get your hands on this, you're going to realize how dated the actual mechanics design and gameplay of this is and no matter how pretty they make it look with this little glow up it's still going to feel extremely dated in several aspects. I would have preferred a just a complete remake/reimagining of Dead Space,... a reboot for current time so to speak.
Not just the exact same game with mid to late ps4 era graphics. It could have been huge and largely expanded with given current hardware, yet remaining faithful to the foundation of the story.
I was thinking it didn't look that great, not sure what all the fuss is about.
Looked just like a PS3 game....
Then realised I'd played the PS3 video... do'h!!
Remake looks spectacular.
Would love to see Dead Space 2 or 3 on PS Extra.
I'm torn ,it looks fantastic and I loved the original, but do I really wanna pay full price for a game ive already played, wish they would've just made dead space 4,how much of a graphics whore am I, is the question I need to ask myself
@KundaliniRising333 so callisto is trash ,this is disappointing
Man I'm really close to finish callisto and I can say is a blast. And graphically looks better than this dead space remake footage. There is a lot of weirdness around callisto reviews that makes a lot of noise to me.. I don't know, I just know that I am a happy chappie playing calisto, losing the track of time playing a game doesn't happen very often to me, but with callisto..
Looks great. Proof that cross-gen should have been dropped a long time ago.
As long as they keep the game true to the original plot I'll bite if not I have the original trilogy.
You can almost tell right away it's a Frostbite engine game - the faces instantly remind me of that Anthem reveal I would say it doesn't look quite as nice as Callisto, then again that game was a wee bit disappointing after I finished it (in a measly 7hrs no less). I have more faith in this.
At first I was like nah, they haven't done that much because obviously memory is flawed and we remember games as we saw them in our lil jellyfish pilots.... but then you see direct comparisons and it is night and day.
Looking forward to this, also its good to hear Isaak's voice.
@Hundred_Hand_Slap perhaps because Dead Space was made in 2008, pretty much at the beginning of the PS3's life, whereas TLOU is from 2013 and has already been remastered once, and said remaster is easily playable on current gen (PS4 and PS5) consoles. You can play the original dead space on PC but you can only really play on a Playstation console if you either have, or can find a PS3 that hasn't YLOD'd itself into the bin
@JB_Whiting I dunno it looks a truckload better than Callisto to me… like wayyy better but it’s probably the Ishimura itself. Those corridors; the lighting omg 🤤 contrast is on point here. Feels like an old friend; very much worth revisiting well actually I selected the wrong video too and was non too blown away until I said this can’t be right and then ohhhh holy shjt ! Some of us are now feeling opportunity missed with what feels like a sort of a crude technological step back in Callisto rather than a DS 4 but that remains open. And this has become a major event on the horizon for me
If Forspoken wasn't releasing in the same month, I'd definitely be tempted.
I'll just wait for the remake to drop down to $20 New in a few years instead, like I did with the original release.
This is easily better than Forspoken. Also we know a lot more about this game as the Devs gave us plenty to look at and learn months ago. Randomly spawning enemies, zero G in more places like the docking bay, power routing decisions (do you choose lights or atmosphere for example).
@Northern_munkey LOL if the shoe fits wear it. My opinion stands. No one is telling you to buy it, and games aren't solely made for you.
@CRASH64 i think you need to have a better understanding about what "entitled" means. People being annoyed about something does not make then entitled. Complaining that a product is not tailor made to suit their own personal preference above everybody elses does. If you are going to use a word to describe somebody or something then please use it in the correct context👍
@Northern_munkey Very condescending! Yet, you continue to prove my point over and over again. I don't know (or care) about where you stand with Last of Us Part 1. I personally skipped the game myself due to lack of interest, but the fact that you feel complaining about something you can simply skip is pure entitlement. There's gonna be lots of non-gamers checking for The Last of Us Part 1 after the show starts on HBO, and I understand that 1. its going to make SONY more money than a Bloodbourne remake, and 2. i'm not the audience for this game. You my friend, are an entitled gamer, and you should just embrace it. There's nothing wrong about it, and I won't look down on you bc of it.
@CRASH64 wtf are you on about?
@Hundred_Hand_Slap troll hush
@BoldAndBrash ever heard of the last of us?
@CRASH64 I'm 1 was just remastered and the another got a full remake like how the 1st resident evil got and no complained about that
@EquiinoxGII nice joke
@KundaliniRising333 I completely disagree
