Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores has just been announced, a DLC expansion for the open world action RPG. This follows a tease from The Snitch earlier in the week.
Burning Shores will take Aloy beyond the main game's map to the south, where she will explore what was once Los Angeles. It's now a highly volcanic area made up of many islands, which is where that flying mount will really come in handy.
Interestingly, Burning Shores is coming exclusively to PS5. Horizon Forbidden West released on both PS5 and PS4, but it seems the DLC will skip Sony's last-gen console. Writing on the PS Blog, Guerrilla Games calls it an "ambitious expansion", and in order to "achieve this grand vision technically and creatively, we’ve made the difficult decision to focus all our efforts on making an incredible experience exclusively for the PlayStation 5 console".
The good news is that the trailer looks great — we can't wait to see what Burning Shores has in store. It releases on 19th April 2023. Are you excited for more Forbidden West? Tell us in the comments section below.

TGA are really the showcase we missed all along
Ps4 finally getting left behind yes.
I need to grab the last 3 trophies for the platinum before the DLC drops. It looks great.
Sounds like no more cross gen games starting in 2023 .
Can't wait to get back into the Horizon world. Really looking forward to this!
@4kgk2 Feel good about yourself? Think of the 100 million people that own a PS4 and those who couldn’t find or afford a PS5. At some point it is time to move on but let’s not denigrate others to make yourself feel better.
Only on PS5? I actually think this is a really bad move.
It is a massive disrespect to all the fans on PS4 who have funded this project and now through no fault of their own lose out.
Gotta say it’s pretty odd to have DLC for a game not be supported for a console it came out on.
As much as I am stoked about this new content, The exclusivity to PS5 considering it released on the last console is a bit weird and lame for them. Albeit it shouldn't have released on PS4 and in my opinion was deceptively marketed as a next Gen game early in its marketing.
I'm tired of cross Gen games holding back innovation based on new hardware and the possibilities; Yet this seems like a weird attempt to pretend like this generation hasn't been a massive cash grab rather than a true next generation from Sony and its first party studios.
Bummer for ps4 players but a long time coming for those of us who bought into their marketing ploys.
Guys/Gals we bout to be blown away! But I do feel sorry for PS4 players.
@TowaHerschel7 uhm no…it’s a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade. One of the last first-party free upgrades.
Once one gets a PS5, one only has to buy the dlc.
@dskatter
What this guy said.
@uptownsoul Pretty much.
@cburg and? They've had 9 years since 2013 to save and prepare for the next one. PS4 needs to be left in the 2010s. PS5s are literally everywhere to buy now
@TowaHerschel7 Incomplete game? They have their full release game they paid for. I didn't consider myself playing an incomplete game because I didn't play every DLC from Valhalla.
Good, good. PS4 will be 10 years old next year. It’s not fair to PS5 players who paid good money for their new console to continue to have their games held-back by PS4. It’s long overdue.
@Andy22385 what a ridiculous and arrogant comment. So self centered.
Just got my PS5 like 3 weeks ago.. and these past 2-3 years I’ve been personally irritated with the cross-gen games.. I felt it was holding my future console back.. this is a step in the right direction imo
They should delay a few weeks and launch alongside Zelda. Traditions!
@TowaHerschel7 wrong on so many levels. The people that liked your misinformed comment are just as bad as you. Fake outrage is lame.
@NintenGuy Same! I'm missing 3 as well. Haha.
Leave that scrap heap ps4 behind yeah, tired of cross gen compromising, more companies just need to start doing it
Really sucks for the PS4 players but oh well. Glad I didn't buy it.
@Uromastryx @TrickyDicky99 @WolfyTn @ItsBritneyB_tch @uptownsoul @theGoodChap @4kgk2 100% agreed. So glad we're starting to see more true PS5 console exclusives being made!
@KidBoruto unfortunately took the best part of 2 years
Looking forward to it but wonder how much more advanced it is in that it cannot run on PS4? Although stocks are now more readily available, with the economy collapse and the price of the PS5, I'm sure there are many out there that WANT the console but due to the cost of it they just can't. It's definitely not a NEED thing at the moment since there are plenty of other games out there for PS4.
And yes I have a PS5 but I had to do some dirty extra work to get the money for it, the economy sux at the moment
I was waiting for this prior to buying the game since I brought the first one as the complete edition. Now, the game goes on the backburner for another few years until the PS5 gets cheaper. Hopefully any bugs will be polished out by then.
Good timing. I just went back to get the last few trophies for the Platinum on HFW today. Idk when I'll get to it, though. I still haven't played the DLC for Horizon Zero Dawn. Mabey, I'll wait and see if the rumored HZD remaster comes true...
Yes can’t wait for this and also new generation only. Finally 2023 the year of the new generation
It’s been a long time coming.
I hope this DLC has a stronger narrative hook than the main game. Forbidden West was quite a step back from Zero Dawn in writing quality IMO
Looks like the start of 2023 is gonna be a great one....Forspoken, Hogwarts, Jedi Survivor and now this..... Still plenty of great installments for the PS4 so am I going to feel sorry because this DLC isn't on PS4....nope!!
Cue all the "screw PS4" trolls.
@cburg He said nothing offensive nor did he put anyone down, you need to chill dude.
Don't like the fact that they've made this dlc exclusive when the base game is cross gen
The cynic in me says this most likely has something to do with the 'next gen' tax & the PS4 version being £10 cheaper after backlash
@KidBoruto you do know this is dlc for a cross gen game right it's not a completely new game lol
Great move Sony shall purchase day one.
Let’s see what my PS5 can really do.
To all those moaning, developers on all sides have been more than generous with cross generation games etc and dlc. It’s been two years and counting.
Just move on and get a new generation console.
You all should have about in the old days.
New generation console new games day one, none of this cross generation games for two years etc.
@Dezzy70 the thing is that back then there was a much greater difference between hardware generations (to the point where backwards compatibility was often done by including previous generation silicone within the new generation hardware) and so much more effort needed to be put into porting between generations (even more than porting between PSVR and PSVR2). Meanwhile there was no digital store so you couldn't check whether someone had a license for one version and offer a paid upgrade to the new one. The benefits we see now are because the technological improvements we've made since then have followed a path chosen to enable them.
Things were worse back then, but having made such progress in terms of both developer experience and customer expectations then "things used to be worse" isn't really a valid excuse to roll back what we've gained through technological innovation.
All of this said: I'm sure there's good reason why the DLC won't be coming to previous generation hardware, but we'll have to wait until April to find out what they're bringing us which wouldn't be possible on decade old hardware.
@theheadofabroom
I agree things are a lot better than the old days for sure.
There just comes a point, now two years, that when you have paid £450 for a new generation hardware with all that new power, you want developers to move on and create games that take advantage of your new console investment.
Else we might not as well not have a new generation.
Some go on about it’s easy to convert, but we know deep down if you built a game from the ground up for the new generation it definitely should be a lot better than the old generation all round.
Looks amazing! Can't wait!
Finally, no more PS4 versions. Time to see what PS5 is capable of without those PS4 limitations.
@awp69 CDProjekt have done the same with the Phantom Liberty DLC, new gen only
I don't know how I feel about this. New PS5 only games are good but I'm sure a few people with the PS4 version of the game were looking forward to the DLC.
Makes total sense..almost every new game sold better to ps5 than ps4...the old console is becoming a fifa/warzone machine or even a glorified media player.
When 3d cgi cartoons started being successful in the early 2000s Disney abandoned hand drawn animation for it. We learned later part of the reason for that was morale and talent retention: many of their people wanted to work on the new exciting trends in animation. I can imagine the devs being pretty excited to work with 2 year old hardware instead of 10 year old hardware and now is the perfect chance. Base game upgrade to PS5 is free, stock issues abating, PS5s are starting to show up in stores, this is just DLC, gives Guerilla and their Decima team a chance to work on a modern platform. Seems like a win for everyone.
This is for sure on of my most awaited things!! Loved this game so much!! More Horizon = best Horizon!!
@RipleysAlien I want all those games too!! Already thinking about my wallet and free time haha
But what about folks who have the PS4 version on a PS5? Are they able to play the game?
makes sense to start dropping ps4.... sony need ps4 players to adopt the ps5.
otherwise why have a ps5 release at all?
I don’t know what is going on with the comments here. It’s like bots or one person using multiple accounts or something to troll.
Anyways, if HFW was PS5 exclusive from the start I don’t think anyone would have minded. But making the DLC exclusive when they made the game for both clearly isn’t fair on those who are still on PS4, for whatever reason.
Not everyone has the money. Not everyone has the desire. And I’m sure some would not have upgraded because Sony released this game cross platform.
So yeah, no need for the trolls or people gloating of PS5 exclusivity. None of us are saying Sony shouldn’t release PS5 only games. Just don’t release things on PS4 unless you’re going to support it fully.
Sony are meant to be “For the Players”.
@cburg I am pretty sure even though 120 millions ps4 were sold, there isn't nearly that much that are still active. In fact, I'd bet there is less than 50 millions active ps4 players still and that's me giving a generous number, it's probably a lot less than that. Then you also have to remove those who have both a ps4 and ps5, which means they aren't affected by that.
Even if there was 120 millions ps4, games should have stopped being released on it the moment the ps5 came out. You have to leave old technology behind no matter how much are affected. If we didn't, we'd still be playing ps2 games.
@4kgk2 Sure, leave those out who have NO access to purchasing a PS5. How about we leave stranded in the middle of Standing Rock in the middle of winter without a jacket. That would be awesome for someone like you.
I hope they give Aloy some personality this time. I feel like they want her to be this perfect female action hero who always does the right thing and puts everyone else’s needs before her own. But honestly, that’s so boring. They really need to rough her up a bit and make the story at least 60% darker than Forbidden West was. Give her some difficult choices. Let her fail spectacularly and deal with the consequences. Anything.
The story in Forbidden West was so safe and inoffensive it was ultimately forgettable, hence winning no awards last night.
@Kienda but would you feel the same way about Horizon 3 being PS5 exclusive? It has to happen eventually or we’ll never move forward. We’ll just be stuck playing upscaled PS4 games forever.
A short expansion seems like the perfect opportunity to show us how good Horizon can look using the full power of the PS5 (what Forbidden West should have been honestly).
We can’t keep scaling back games because it’s not fair on the people still using last gen hardware. PS5 has been out for two years, it’s time to move on.
The DLC will probably be a stand-alone story anyway, so people won’t be missing out on the main storyline. Just play it when you get a PS5 🤷♂️
Guess I won't bother buying the PS4 version, then.
Will eventually just grab the PS5 version with all DLC included for $20 or so when and if I eventually get a PS5.
I'm all for moving on to PS5 exclusivity but choosing DLC for a cross-gen game as the time to make that move is borderline disrespectful. Anyone who can't admit that is in a bizarre place in life.
Even as a PS5 owner what I take away from this and their statement justifying it is they really held back for the main game (the one I paid 70 for) but the DLC "yeah man we went all in." Lol, like what?
I am all for leaving behind the ps4...but this is just scummy
And I own a ps5 and the game but I don't even like it...but bizarre to randomly only give the ps5 version the dlc
Don’t like this move. Not at all.
The base game is available on PS4, it should be released on PS4 as well.
That said I’ll still play it and enjoy it.
Removed - inappropriate
@IMustardMitt screw PS4 brokies
@cburg PS5 is not hard to get anymore and anyone saying it is is just chatting ***** or broke one of them because all I hear still is they can't get hold of it and that's bullcrap, people are still using the same excuses for why they haven't got one as they did when it came out its so stupid
First - do we know for certain when we put our PS4 disc in our PS5 we will be able to buy this, and for the same price? That has always been my concern w/ PS constantly pushing the "save yourself $10 and buy the PS4 version for the free upgrade". I don't see how they could stop us since our PS5s will have the PS5 version of the game, but I could see them somehow charging an extra $10 for the dlc kind of like how Ghost of Tsushima does. (I bought the PS4 DC but not the upgrade)
Second: They really need to show us this expansion running on a PS4 at 12 fps or something to show us how it actually couldn't work. I still don't believe Ratchet & Clank couldn't be made to work on a PS4.
Third - For all the people saying "Good, get over it".😝
I just don't believe they're making anything that runs in 4k on PS5 that can not run in 1080p on PS4 with the same engine. Sure, a brand new game could be PS5 only, but it's just an expansion. This needs to be able to be sold w/o owning the base game for me to even begin to believe that conversation.
Always gotta watch out for the Sony hanky-panky.😱
I was fiercely campaigning for Horizon 2 not to be held down by last gen but now that it already released there follow through to the end! That's scummy to give all the players that bought the PS4 version a giant middle finger.
@cburg drop the fake outrage and buy a ps5 already
Didn't Ghosts do the same thing with Iki Island DLC. I could easily be wrong but I thought there was some controversy over the DLC for that. Maybe it was not ps5 only but had a weird upgrade path. Either way this is frustrating but also good in a way. Time to let 10 yr old hardware go but to alienate the millions of ps4 players that bought forbidde
west seems weird.
@rjejr The PS4 to PS5 upgrade is free, works with a PS4 disc, and functionally there will be no difference played on a PS5 other than the presence of a PS4 disc inside the console.
@cburg Hilarious. Six true words and you get all salty.
@dskatter "other than the presence of a PS4 disc inside the console"
You don't think they could program it to tell the difference between a PS4 disc and a PS5 disc inside the console and then charge you more for the upgrade if it's a PS4 disc? 🤷♂️
Not saying they will, only that they could.
Also, they would most certainly know if you bought it digitally on the PS4 store and then upgraded on the PS5. But I really don't think they would do anything to divide the physical from digital owners.
Pretty stoked for this. Had a gut feeling like the majority this would be announced. I’m kinda glad it’s a post-game centric DLC. If it’s a continuation off of Frozen Wilds, I’ll have to finish that one up soon!
Wish they’d make the next game in my home city of Boston. I have the perfect name for it: Horizon: Forbidden East. Brilliant I know. Creativity oozes out of me at all times
@ItsBritneyB_tch I just think it’s not very fair.
There are a lot of gamers who can’t get a PS5. Yet they bought the game just like everyone else.
Sony could provide the DLC to them as a cloud version or something if the graphical differences are that stark. But the reality is Sony is likely just trying to drive people to PS5.
They did this with Final Fantasy 7 Remake. There are people playing the Yuffi DLC on PCs that are weaker than PS4s. It makes no sense why Intergrade wasn’t a DLC for PS4 also.
The same Death Stranding Directors Cut only being PS5.
This isn’t the first time. People weren’t hailing it as a shift to next gen when they did it those times either.
@rjejr You are being WAY too paranoid on this.
Finally, no more designing a game around a 5400rpm platter harddrive.
How many children are whining in here about not getting a DLC for the PS4? Life must be good if you're crying about a game extension.
This is the way it worked with every new console generation. Frankly HFW had no business being released for the PS4 at all. That in itself was a gift to the PS4 people.
Buy a PS5, they're available easily now.
@invictus4000 Awesome. Go ahead and finish it off dude.
@Americansamurai1 finally 😎
Seems like a money grab in the middle of a terrible economy. Having trouble with gas and food prices? No problem, go out and buy a PS5 because that’s the only way to escape your problems with the Horizon Forbidden West DLC. I’m lucky that I own a PS5, but many of my friends played on the PS4. I will pass on this DLC.
@cburg Do you honestly believe that there are 100 million ps4 owners who want to buy a ps5, but can't? Serious question.
@GreatAuk on the contrary, I'd say life must be pretty bad to complain about such a thing. People who are happy with their lives don't tend to focus on such insignificant matters.
@NoFaceBigFoot "How about we leave stranded in the middle of Standing Rock in the middle of winter without a jacket. That would be awesome for someone like you"
reductio ad absurdum at its finest.
this also happened with ff7 re intergrade a year ago. Whatever the world moves on and horizon was held back by ps4.
@Kienda Whilst I agree that the timing of the shift to PS5-only titles is bad. It should've been with a new game, not DLC to a cross-gen title. It is important to understand that you didn't ''fund'' this DLC by buying Forbidden West. It should be the other way around. You funded Forbidden West by buying the game. The funding for the DLC will come from the sales of said DLC.
@jrt87 facts
gotta be real selfish and jealous to still be defending crossgen in 2022
Ps5 is still impossible to get in the Netherlands.
@Mob7 curious to see the first part titles next year. Spiderman 2 is going to be a graphic powerhouse.
That sucks. It’s one thing to say the next game is PS5 only but really odd to cut out users that have existing access to the current game.
Annnnnd here’s my reason to upgrade from a PS4 Pro
F*** cross gen, it’s time us ps5 owners got what we paid for.
@Stnkygrngo do it you will be so glad you did trust me
@cburg or you could look at it another way ,why should someone who works a 50hr week on minimum wage, who saved up for a year to buy a ps5 ,not celebrate this news ,surely you wouldn't begrudge someone who is finally going to see the potential in their expensive purchase, by making them feel bad ?
@Ryu_Niiyama well they wanna do what they cant on ps4 ,this is good news ,the ps5 has been available for over 2 years ,its time to move on
@dskatter "You are being WAY too paranoid on this."
Not now I'm not. Know when I WAS being way too paranoid about this? When I was concerned Sony might bring HFW DLC to the PS5 version but not the PS4 version months ago. And look how that turned out. 😝
@jrt87 here here sir
It annoys me a little that ragnarok was on the ps4 ,you can tell by certain game mechanics it was held back for this ancient system, ragnarok was superb ,think how better it could've been
Jim Ryan did say in one of those earnings reports that PS4 is being transitioned into a FTP live service machine so to see this DLC be PS5 only isn't particularly surprising.
Bring it Aloy! Me and my daughter can’t wait to play this!
Finally we get to see a titan live!!!! My hype for this has gone into meltdown. My goty 100%%%
@tallythwack Except PS5 isn’t readily available in most markets (as in can walk in a store and easily get one) and even if it was it is still odd to cut access mid game. I have the game on PS5 and I still think this decision sucks.
@Would_you_kindly I never said it was a full game! Still exciting to see PS5 exclusive DLC.
It'll probably be available on pc before I can find a PS5 around these parts.
They can’t win. Get slated when release on ps4, now they’ve moved on they’re still getting *****. Comical
@Kienda Thats a rediculous response. Ps4 players bought a fully featured game with nothing missing and no promise of dlc. They got exactly what they paid for and equating dlc to 'support' is clealy a reach too far. Making additional content they cant access is clearly worthwhile now the newer machine has a much larger install base.
This entitled mind set of expecting anything other than good version of what you bought, is a fairly new mindset for gamers, and clearly only good for making people surly and not think straight.
Don't get this at all. Must be running on the same engine as before so why the cut for PS4? Perhaps Guerrilla Games are just obeying an edict by their overlord Jim Ryan?
@Ralizah same here - I might get round to buying it at some point but it'll wait until the redesigned PS5 appears.
Don't get me wrong, there needs to be more PS5 content 'cos the current PS5 only line-up is a bit of a joke (same applies to the Xbox) with 'elusives' instead of exclusives.
@sanderson72 it may be running in the same engine, but evidently the main game wasn't pushing the engine to its limits. I'd guess because everything had to be optimised for asset streaming off a 5400rpm hard disk, rather than the SSD
This website comment sections are unbearable 😂😂
@Titntin I have no idea why the internet does this to people.
It is not a “ridiculous response”. If you make a product for your customers, respect them.
Sony isn’t doing that with this. DLC is part of the life of a game. The graphics aren’t going to be unobtainable to PS4. If they were then they shouldn’t have released the game on PS4 in the first place.
In 2 years time this game + DLC will release on PC and be played on weaker PCs than PS4.
The least Sony could do is respect their current fanbase who have supported them and their games including this one. Even a cloud version would suffice (if the graphics are really that hard to obtain on PS4). But we all know this is just to force people to upgrade. Just as it was for FF7:R and Death Stranding Directors Cut.
Stop shilling for multi-billion dollar companies and their anti consumer tactics.
Starting to think they should have dropped the 'Forbidden West' part from the title and marketed it as Horizon: Burning Shores - a small standalone game for PS5.
Would have been less contentious maybe.
@Ryu_Niiyama you know what would suck more ,if the dlc had to have content cut because of a 10 year old console ,time to let it go
@Kienda so square are forcing people to upgrade to a ps5 ,as are focus ? Don't be daft, so you're saying ps5 owners have to make do with an inferior product for another few years ,just to satisfy those who can't be bothered to buy a ps5.
@Kienda 'DLC is part of the life of a game.'
It literally is NOT. Its not support, its not fixing anything and it adds or sorts nothing to the game that was bought on a PS4. The PS4 was not launched with a roadmap of updates that would be available. If the Devs now want to expand on the tale they told, but push the tech further, then that's their prerogative and they should not be held captive by over entitled naysayers.
"I have no idea why the internet does this to people.
Stop shilling for multi-billion dollar companies and their anti consumer tactics."
Yes why does the internet allow you to call me a shill because I understand the games business when you don't? You are literally engaging in the kind of pathetic behaviour you were trying to call out - the irony is delicious!
@tallythwack
You’re speaking from an entitled position. Anyone who owns a PS5 is very fortunate. There are many people who cannot afford a PS5.
Unfortunately a lot of people in the comments here operate from a very elitist mindset. They aren’t thinking outside their own desires.
Let me point out a few things.
1. This practice isn’t fair to half of Sony’s fanbase/customers - no matter how you spin it.
2. Not everyone can upgrade. Money is an issue for many people.
3. Just because you have a PS5 and want more PS5 games doesn’t mean they couldn’t have made the DLC work on PS4, a cloud version would suffice.
4. Sony is pretty much the only company doing this (barring CDPR). Halo and Forza Horizon 5 are still getting updates on Xbox One. Breath of the Wild still got all DLC on Wii U and Switch etc. The exception to the rule is with remakes/remasters - not newly released games.
And @Tintin you have called me both “ridiculous” and “pathetic”. When all I have said is you are defending the bad practices of a business who should do better. Making money should not outweigh treating customers fairly. And I’m not sure why this is so controversial to want to stand up for customers.
I didn't want it to come to ps4 in the first place but Sony did and are now abandoning those that bought it there. Should be all or nothing.
@Kienda
Actually arguing with someone who clearly has comprehension issues and doesn't understand the games market is a waste of time. I wander why I should engage in it, your clearly here to stamp your feet, so I should just let you get on with it.
Personally, I believe devs can do what they want as long as they don't break promises made. That's how I made games for 20 years (including DLC), and that's how devs are making games now. Feel free to protest about that how you will, it makes zero difference to anyone.
Have a lovely day.
@Titntin I’m protesting it by stating my opinion. You engaged with that and attacked my view so I defended myself.
I’m not sure why it is such a big deal. We have a difference of opinion. I’m not here to stamp my feet, I’m just saying that I think there was a better way of handling this DLC.
Either release a stand alone game for PS5 only. Or give PS4 the DLC also. It isn’t that hard. It’s not that controversial. I think people are just too touchy here when defending something they are passionate about - including me.
Anyways, have a nice day also.
@cburg self centered? Not at all. I paid 500 not to have my gaming experiences affected by casual gamers who don't wish to upgrade. Nearly 15 year old PCs match the performance of the PS4 and it massively limits the scope of games. Generations still need to exist
@Andy22385 Yawn.
@Kienda there are people who still own a ps3 and for one reason or another dont own a ps4 ,there will always be people who stick with the ps4 either because of where they live ,financially, or just because they don't want a ps5 ,do you expect Sony to just carry on supporting old tech forever ,clearly they wanted a bigger scope for the dlc thats why its not available on last gen ,ms flight simulator is not on xbox one as are a few other titles ,the new plague tale being another ,next year there will be even fewer titles available for the ps4 ,so what happens then ? You say its elitist ,I say people just want the best for the 500 pound console theyve probably saved months for,oh and for the record why the hell should I care about someone ive neither met and who i will never meet ,who can't play with the newest toy ,aww what a shame,arsed....their are people with much bigger issues who deserve my attention.
@tallythwack Well, I still believe in my opinion.
All I have said is that I don’t think it’s the best decision. I wouldn’t have minded if the full game was PS5 only, but if you release cross-gen then support cross-gen. That’s all.
You don’t have to worry if we can’t agree. It’s really not that big a deal
@Kienda im not worried at all,merry Xmas to you and yours 😁
