Sonic the Hedgehog fans have been consoling themselves after losing out to Genshin Impact in the huge social media war to win the Players' Voice Award at The Game Awards last night. While there were three other finalists in Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarok, and Stray, it quickly became clear during the earlier rounds of voting that only Sonic Frontiers would be able to match Genshin Impact for votes. However, it didn't garner quite enough to win the award.
The result received a mixed reaction from the live audience, with many audible cheers and boos. However, Sonic fans have quickly jumped to give one another a pat on the back for getting Sonic Frontiers so close to an award. The Sonic the Hedgehog Reddit page now contains many posts asking for fans to bury the hatchet with Genshin Impact backers. However, a popular post on Twitter says both Sonic Frontiers and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 were robbed of awards, so the reaction to the results is somewhat split.
At least Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto had some kind words for the game's fanbase: "We made it into the top 5 of TGA Players' Voice! This is all thanks to your support! The third generation is off to a good start. I'm happy! I am sure that this result will be a big driving force for the next work. We promise you an experience of greater excitement and surprise. Finally, I would like to thank all the staff involved in this project."
To thank the fans for their support, Genshin Impact developer Mihoyo is giving everyone 800 Primogems. Which did you vote for? Are you holding back tears for Sonic and friends or celebrating the Genshin Impact victory? Play nice in the comments below.

Genshin impact shouldn't have even been on the list it didn't come out this year. The award was for a ongoing game.
That was straight-up bribery from Genshin Impact
Last year I thought Genshin Impact was a Switch exclusive at one point. Looks like a F2P mobile game to me. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't get its impact
Sonic Frontiers is mediocre at best. The only reason Sonic fans praise this game so much is because of three reasons: The story, the proper characterization of the main characters, and that it isn't as bad as Sonic Forces, which is an argument Sonic fans love to use: If it isn't as terrible as this game, it is good. It is like if you eat only dog food for the last ten years and one day you have the opportunity to eat burned rice. It isn't a good meal, but it is still better than the stuff you had before. This is what Sonic Frontiers is.
@RareFan To be honest I have no idea what's going on the game and couldn't care less about the plot... traversal is just so fun and addictive. It's also a really relaxing game despite its speed. I really enjoy it mechanically.
I'm sorry sonic fans, your sacrifice was not in vain. It will go towards my 5 chances at rolling a new character in my gacha game
Hopefully we'll get more free primogems in Genshin because of it. We usually do for big awards like PlayStation Partner Awards last week.
See there is a benefit. Trololololo
It's always about which game's audience can mobilize best but I'm still not sure why Genshin (a 2020 game) was even on the list.
A Plague Tale Requiem deserved recognition and got none so...
Genshin Impact had more of a world, combat and story content than Sonic by the 2nd expansion.
And it is 100% more fun to explore the world (that is stunning on PC) in co-op with a friend.
This was never a contest.
The JRPG wheels fall off Xenoblade 3 in Part 6. I still not gone back to finish it. It is a snoozefest.
@Uncharted2007 Speaking for myself, the nomination put the game on my radar. All is not lost. Nominations are a form of recognition when you realize how many games didn't make it to the stage.
I agree with XC3 getting robbed of awards, how the hell didn't XC3 at least win best music?
I only speak for myself now but I never cared much for Genshin Impact and sadly am not surprised it won but honestly, I don't think I would have even cared if Frontiers did win. That feeling mainly stems from how I stopped taking TGA and their Players' Voice polls (and most gaming awards polls in general) seriously a long time ago for several reasons.
What I do care about is worrying how toxic many fans within the Sonic community (not pointing out anyone here btw) are behaving towards the GI community right now, thats just wrong on so many levels and will not help things whatsoever.
I bought sonic and tried it, but it feels like a game that is still in development, experimental, in alpha.
It feels too unfinished from the level design.
Did they forget about doing some more level design? Not enough creativity?
Oh, the entitlement in that tweet is next level.
As a Sonic fan I can wholeheartedly say that I couldn't care less about some Twitter people rigging votes, the mere fact that a 2 year old game was even on this shows how ridiculous these awards can be.
All I care about is that I played a very good 3D Sonic game this year and had an absolute blast with it
People/players/fans voting categories are totally pointless. It is all about which fanatic group is larger/using more sophisticated tools for voting.
@RareFan no, I praise Frontiers because I had a damn good time playing it
Sonic Frontiers got what it deserved. Nothing. Mediocre game & terrible fanbase (the internet hardcores).
@Agramonte no problem with it or anything beating Sonic but I find it odd that a game from 2020 is in this years nominations
I'm not crazy enough to say Sonic Frontiers was my favorite game of the year but I think I can say I at least had the most fun playing it out of any other game this year if that makes sense. Game was an absolute blast despite the flaws.
Genshin really shouldn't have even been in the running but oh well.
Literally besides Elden Ring none of my other top 5 games for the year got an award. Plague Tale, Sonic, Sifu, and Evil West(though I know, that one wasn't eligible anyway) all got the shaft for sure.
maybe if sonic was released finished etc, it may have won.
its only due to its die hard overlook negative release issues it stood a chance
@Sequel
I was going to respond with something similar. What little I can understand of the story isn't bad, but it's really traveling around the open world, as well as a good number of the cyberspace levels, that I really enjoyed. It's not a perfect game by any means but it is some of the most fun I've had this year.
@NintenGuy Same goes for Horizon then
@Haruki_NLI Absolutely!
@Uncharted2007 Plague Tale deserves to be forgotten.
Genshin has gone from strength to strength, the Sumeru update was immense. The fanbase is dire though.
@Korgon I'd go along with that, sometimes I think how much fun we have seems to be too low on the list of things we take from games. I can't think of a game I enjoyed playing as much this year, though I had a blast with Goat Simulator 3 last night
I still don't know how Genshin fits in the category (then again, a lot of the categories in Game Awards don't make sense sometimes, like they just want to award something or someone for the sake of having an award). Genshin fits more with the best on-going game but then FFXIV beat them to it. Regardless of who won, I think both games are fun. Genshin has a lot of contents lately albeit the gacha mechanics but I've had enough characters to get me going. Sonic Frontiers is surprisingly fun as well, it does try to be as BoTW as it can with the open-world map but still fun for what it offers.
Why so surprised??? Sonic Frontiers isn't a great game. And I'm saying this as a huge fan of the 3D series.
It's not a bad game either, but the main thing, the Open Zones are scratching on a surface of possibilities. Story is brought forward in lifeless, boring mini missions. The cyberspace levels are good, but they are always in the same few backgrounds and can't match the gameplay of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.
The real star are the Titan fights. The whole game is good, but there's a lot to improve.
Haven't received my primogems yet 🤣
@Beerheadgamer82 Not only is it not on Switch, it’s actually a PlayStation console exclusive. Only other places you can play it on is PC & mobile.
I do agree that the game shouldn’t have been up for the award.
It didn’t release this year & the devs literally bribe their audience with free in game currency to ensure wins.
@RareFan exactly . still haven’t beaten the game yet , rather play sonic adventure 1 and 2 instead . and this is coming from someone who loved boost sonic when it first came out (unleashed) but god damn is it not it anymore . it’s just , ugh
@Beerheadgamer82 it is on mobile & it is free to play but it's very well made & fun with great characters , locations, music & voice acting well worth trying if you can get past the whole 'gatcha' thing
@Nintendo4Sonic the “cyberspace” levels so far have been boring and too automated and linear with overly stiff movement . i’m not far in the game though but so far they’re just lazy and the music is out of place . this game feels like a mobile game & the rehashed levels is very off-putting . another reason why unleashed remains the best of these boost games imo , completely original and the most depth.
@Haruki_NLI Your reply makes no sense. Horizion got good reviews and didn't go on sale for half off 2 weeks after launch like Sonic Frontiers. Also Horizion fans didn't try to rig the viewers choice poll and cry when it didn't work. Sonic Frontiers wasn't nominated for anything else. Horizion had plenty of nominations. My top two games Elden Ring and Ragnork got plenty of awards so... I don't know what you were trying to do.🤣
@NintenGuy Sonic Frontiers got no awards.
Horizon also got no awards this time as well as in 2017, as per the internet meme "Horizon Zero Awards", circa December 2017 or thereabouts.
Explanation fulfilled. Sorry if the joke was too obtuse.
@carlos82
It is not limited to a game that launches in the same year. Most "ongoing games" are on the original 30 games in Round 1.
"The group consists of 2022 releases and ongoing games that are still considered relevant"
Destiny 2, Apex Legends, NoMansSky, Fortnite, Minecraft and FF14 were all in Round 1. Same as last year.
And it is up to the players. If "Version 3.0" beats "new game #3" that is just how it is
@Haruki_NLI Irrelevent. Sonic Frontiers fans so salty they have to bring up a unrelated game to divert attention from their failures. This article, the failed poll rigging, and post's like yours proves the harcore Sonic fanbase is a internet meme. 🤣
The Genshin community is huge compare to the Sonic community.
I didn't even expect neither to win anything.
@NintenGuy Two points.
1) Sonic Frontiers was remarkably mediocre. I dont think it was deserving of an award, regardless of how good it was relative to the series as a whole.
2) The Horizon joke was a popular meme in 2017, which I replied to what I assumed was a similar style joke from yourself. Apologies.
@Haruki_NLI Oh Lord. I thought you were one of the toxic fans clogging up various forum since last night. Sorry I never heard that Horizon joke. My bad dude.
@NintenGuy No, I couldn't give a toss about the Game Awards. It's always gone on for too long and felt too....artificial, I suppose is the word.
I also happened to be asleep so just saw who won what and called it a day while reading any interesting news.
No hard feelings though, it's an older meme sir, but it checks out.
I'm not really sure why either fanbase cares. This has to be the most meaningless award of the whole show that is still pretty meaningless outside of the trailers and reveals. It was really good in that regard, but why people get so butthurt over this, I don't know. Again, especially given that this award is meaningless given that it doesn't even have to be a game that was released in 2022. If it was a People's Choice Game of the Year kind of a thing, then ok to an extent, but it's clearly not.

@nomither6 I like the soundtrack. But the levels are very straight forward
@Nintendo4Sonic yeah the musics not bad , i just dont think it fits the game levels . this same music could be copy/pasted into a tekken game or something and it wouldnt make a difference
@nomither6 yeah, you're right 😁 some of the cyberspace levels songs really give me Tekken vibes.
@stvevan I have to agree this nonsense with releasing games and fixing them later has to stop.
Of course Genshin won. There was never a contest. Sonic Frontiers isn't on the same level as GI when it comes to deep gameplay mechanics and production value.
Damn shame about both games not winning a single award.
I look forward to buying both of them, soon as they're on sale for $20 New each.
