The Last of Us: Part I is by and large a very successful remake of one of Sony's best games. However, upon launch, one thing left a bad taste in the mouths of its fans: the asking price. The PS5 remake costs $69.99/£69.99, which is quickly becoming an industry standard. It's pretty darn steep, and left a sour aftertaste on what should've been a straightforward release.
Things have complicated a little more now that the PC version has been dated. It's coming on 3rd March 2023, and you can pre-order it right now on Steam and Epic Games Store. Fans quickly realised something, though — the game is priced $59.99/£49.99, a whole 10 dollars (or 20 pounds) less than the PS5 version.
Obviously this is good news for those who will be buying and playing the PC port, but it's a bit of a kick in the teeth for those who had to fork out the full 70 smackers. Many would argue the remake shouldn't have cost the full premium in the first place, so they might take issue with the port going (relatively) cheap.
A weird one, this. At the time of writing, Returnal has also been confirmed for PC but no price has been announced yet. It'll be interesting to see if that also comes under the SRP of the PS5 version.
What do you think of this? Be nice in the comments section below.

Glad I didn't buy it. 70 is too much, maybe at 40$ or ps extra
Well I can't say I'm surprised, Sony knows that price won't wash with the PC crowd and it should never have been a full price release on the PS5 either. For what is essentially a remaster of a game that's been about £15 for years and still looks and plays perfectly fine
Gonna be some upset people...
That’s cool for the PC crowd, Merry Christmas 🎄
reaches for the popcorn
I expect Sony to reduce the price on PS5 as well. It would be a terrible business decision to offer a high profile Naughty Dog game cheaper on PC than on their own platform.
Ouch…but I never bought the original, so I didn’t so much mind paying for this one.
Wowwwwwww lol that's some comedy right there.
I'm pleased I waited until price drop at argos very recently and got it on ps5 for just over 40quid ,I gave remastered version as well but wanted to see if it is worth the upgrades ,I was never going to pay 70 for it but glad I waited and so far I'm early on into it and quite pleased with the remake and happy for pc players get to experience it
Because it was a nonsense price to start with. Hopefully these PC releases stick to that price point and they reduce the price on PS5 too.
I’ve said before that Sony only sees its existing fanbase within PlayStation as easy marks who can be nickeled and dimed to no end while they sweeten the deal for the PC folks that they’re trying to entice.
It’s only becoming more true with time.
PS5 tax is obvious. Sony knows PC gamers will never pay $70 for a nearly 10 year old game that was spruced up.
The PS5 version should've launched at 49.99 to be honest, but it went on sale for black Friday as I knew it likely would, and grabbed a physical copy then
Weird on PS Blog it says the game is $59.99
Doesn't come as a surprise sadly. What does take the p*** is this is the first opportunity for PC gamers to buy it, whereas some of those loyal to PS have bought it 3 times and still pay more
Of course it's cheaper Sony knows console players will pay anything and they won't complain, in fact the ones that do complain will immediately be shut down and be called whiny complainers.
And that's why it was a cash grab.
🍿
Well, it’s even more ridiculous if you recall that from this 50 quids, Valve and Epic keep 15, and Sony only get 35, while Sony get all of the 70 from its PS Store sales (taxes ignored for easier calc).
This is the what 5th or 6th time they have tried to sell us the exact same story? It was garbage when Rockstar did it with GTA, it was garbage when Bethesda did it with Skyrim. It's garbage now with Sony doing it.
@Max_the_German interesting info. It's also difficult to judge PS5's games sales as they count the ones included with console packs, but I don0t think this "remake" has sold very well as expected. Still, once the TV show comes out I'm sure it will be on fire.
People should not be paying $49, $59 or $69 for rehash. PC, PS5, Switch... I skip them all.
I got Horizon on PC for $11 and that is because it has a modern benchmark I can use when tinkering.
3DMark wanted $9 for the TimeSpy upgrade.
Games with Trophies command an appropriate premium IMO.
It's 59.99 on Steam and Epic, not sure where you saw the 49.99 price.
What's more dumb is the PC release gives Sony a 70/30 revenue split so they stand to make even less on PC. Sony is sabotaging their console customer relations and really testing their tolerance with moves like this. Loyal console owners are being punished with a more expensive, technically stunted version of the game while new PC players outside the ecosystem are getting the unfettered bells and whistles treatment, and this time it only took a mere 6 months for this ever shrinking port turnaround.
Like it or not this is the direction Sony is heading in; expensive PS5 games at launch going to PC not long after with additional features making the "definitive" version for sale cheaper with no PS+ requirements for online multiplayer. Hopefully a large number of PS5 owners will start to recognise this pattern as more of these ports continue and respond accordingly.
Predicable joke seen a thousand miles away: “PlayStation, For the Payers!”
I'll wait till it's free on PS Essential
There is a "European PlayStation Tax" in both versions. In Steam the game is 60 euros while the PS5 is 80. There are no minimum specs in the Steam page for some bizarre reason.
Wow that's...um...that's something. Glad I stuck to my guns on this one.
59,99€ not 49,99€.
Sony treating PC players like gold and they still won't support it. Have fun with those Miles Morales numbers again lol
Where are the "not a cash grab" and "fair price" people now? It definitely feels like Sony has no problems lowering the price of this amazing groundbreaking remake.
Some settings are going to kick some GPUs & CPUs in the ass from a couple of gens ago especially trying to reach 4k 60 or equivalent to a PS5.
Shafting their biggest supporters when they charge more to the people that shelled out for their console
Yup they see us as loyal pay pigs, I'm surprised they didn't test our loyalty further and charge $80 or something. Well I guess they are content with the $70 they willl eventually be charging for the Part II remaster.
I only buy Digital media, so i was nervous this game might not get the online store discounts that the physical game would get at brick and mortar retailers. But i was able to get it off the PS store for $49.99, so even tho I would have prefer $39.99, i snagged it up and loved it, one of my favorite games on PS5, and i know hope they bring a Native PS5 version of Part 2. I would get that at some point also. Not sure it will happen anytime soon, due to blowback from the fan’s. I am a sucker for certain games and just love seeing them get to progress with the better technology. Granted in fairness i don’t want it to stop production of new gaming experiences, so i understand i can’t always have that both ways.
SteamDB says it’s $59.99. So it’s a $10 disparity for a 6 month old port.(there is a £20 disparity in the UK but that’s because steam uses a very generous currency conversion rate)
Marvels midnight suns is £65 on PS5, and £50 on Steam and they were released concurrently. That’s the one people should be outraged by if they’re looking to be outraged over the price of non-essential entertainment products.
I'd assume they're going to cut down the price of the PS5 version to match the one on PC by the time that one's released in March. Would be hilarious otherwise.
The $20 Less of Us
Haha carry on milking your most loyal Sony, bravo.
Well this is ugly.
If Sony is smart they will drop the PS5 version down to the same price on PC launch day.
Otherwise… what the hell Sony?
@Rob_230 Michael Jackson, is that you?
If ps games stick to that price point on PC we'd all be better off selling our PS5 and just building a decent PC.
Maybe, just maybe, games shouldn't be $70 on consoles to begin with. Just thinking out loud.
Companys release games cheaper on PC hoping the player base won't pirate the game. Embarrassing really.
Console players are now used as piggy banks, these corporations can’t get away with it on PC.
@TruthTellerFact18 don't think they're that concerned about piracy or they'd use denuvo
@NEStalgia
‘Maybe, just maybe, games shouldn't be $70 on consoles to begin with. Just thinking out loud.’
That’s what I’ve been saying all along.
Its because Sony knows that ppl would pay $70 on the PS5 and not question it whatsoever.
The game is likely to be $50 on both platforms by March 2023.
Got it for 49.99 with Black Friday thats funny.
Not sure how its a weird one. Pc games are always sold at a cheaper price, more because you don't ever go into a brick and mortar store and buy physical games for pc anymore.
Its been this way for over 10years
@Bez87 this doesn’t make any sense. Was this game not sold for $70 on PSN?
@Shad361 “ Console players are now used as piggy banks, these corporations can’t get away with it on PC.”
This isn’t now just happening. It have literally been like this forever.
But can 499 PC play this as good quality as PS5?
So I got this at £40 over black friday. I have played about an hour (I know thats not enough time) and I just… presentation as always is incredible but the gameplay is just so ***** right now. I did the same thing with the PS4 version. I hope it gets better. On the other hand I just played through God of War 2018 for the first time and that is actually a great game.
@ChrisDeku agreed. everyone kinda conveniently ignoring the passing of time that has and will continue to have occurred since this game's initial release on console.
Still, it could've easily been 59.99 on PS5.
Classic taking the ones close for granted and trying hard to impress strangers.
The PC release won't have anywhere near the marketing costs that the console edition did, and unless I'm mistaken, there will also be no manufacturing, packaging, or worldwide distribution costs to incur like they do with the physical release of PS5 games.
It's also getting released 6 months later than the console version, of course it should be cheaper. People will cry about anything today.
I got it for free from Sony Rewards, so personally I would have no reason to complain about this particular instance. Still, it is annoying that every PC version is cheaper than the PlayStation version (since they are automatically $70 being on the PS5 of course).
I actually have no problem with games going to PC. It's the fact that the PC players get a better version of a game and for less money the vast majority of the time. Other than getting to play it before PC players do, those two things are what truly dilutes the whole "PlayStation Exclusive" term, not the fact that they appear on PC eventually.
@Choppaz nah you are entitled. if you don't like a price of a game don't buy it. its not really that difficult, and doesn't need to be.
by the time it comes out , i'm sure the price of the ps5 version will be the same , pretty sure it was already on sale for that price last week.
@RenanKJ They didn't drop the price of Sackboy, don't expect anything.
@AverageGamer it’s getting worse now. PC gaming is more accessible and they have raised prices
@Intr1n5ic So why was the digital version sold for $70? What packaging did that have? Time to wake up.
So much for 'atleast one year' between PS5 and PC releases. More lies.
@Shad361 It has to match the physical price otherwise the majority of people would just opt for the cheaper option. And then if Sony said, we're only selling digital now because nobody is buying physical anymore, I guarantee the same people would be crying about not having the option to own physical media anymore.
There are certain individuals who can't be pleased, who are always looking for something to cry about on the internet. Did you even buy the remake at it's release price, or are you just jumping on the hate bandwagon? Judging by the majority of your contributions here, I'm guessing it's the latter.
Thank goodness. My RTX 4090 founders edition cost over $4k
So uhh, what's the incentive to actually buy a PS5 these days? Genuinely curious.
@Intr1n5ic so you admit it’s a scam. And no I didn’t buy it because it’s a cash grab used to milk whales which is what Sony cares about most nowadays. Which is why Horzion is also being remastered, fast cash from fanboys
@Shad361 You're a prime example of what I'm talking about, people who communicate online with the emotional maturity of a child.
Nothing I said infers a scam, it makes complete sense from a business standpoint. And of course you didn't buy it, you would rather run to the internet to cry about the price difference of a product you have no interest in buying.
For the record, I didn't buy it either. I completed it on the PS3 and PS4 pro, so I didn't feel the need to triple dip on it, but at no point did it cross my mind to go online and act like a d**k about it.
Keep paying that Sony tax you guys. I've been doing my part and not bought a single $70 game ever since the price hike went into effect. Does it suck not playing games when they release? Sure but good games are good games forever and I'd rather not support things like this if they're just going to turn around and offer the exact same game somewhere else for cheaper. What a slap in the face for loyal fans.
@Pat_trick People who said it wasn't a cash grab referred to the amount of work that was done for it to be made as opposed to cash grab remakes that look and play terrible. Practically everyone agreed that the price was high; some people simply didn't mind paying it.
@TrickyDicky99 who says they're decreasing exactly? Like God of War 2 that broke records?
@KilloWertz actually, PC gamers not only get games years later, but by the time PS games launch on PC they're much cheaper on Playstation.
@NEStalgia Agreed. Games should cost as much as they did 30 years ago, since they are just as easy to make and let's not forget that prices for all goods and salaries haven't increased since then. Just thinking out loud.
@naruball Yeah, shame business profits and growth have been down with this endless bear market and shrinking share values for 30 years. I hear Embracer had to pay for Square Enix in corn meal and goat bladders since they've been losing money for decades. Thank goodness Gaben invented that time machine so every game publisher can charge prices from 20 years ago! Otherwise Andrew Wilson and Strauss Zelnick would have to share a double bunk bed in a mud hut.
@naruball Oh yeah, I actually agree with you. Maybe what I said before wasn't clear, so it's my fault.
I think it's a cash grab for Sony due to their pricing. I doubt Naughty Dog didn't try their hardest while they were developing this game.
@TrickyDicky99 it’s going to get way worse for them. God of War was the biggest game they will have until Spider-Man. Final Fantasy will do ok but not anywhere near as much as those 2,and it’s just a timed exclusive anyway.
Me personally ragnarok is the last game I will buy on ps5 until Spider-Man
As an aside, it seems that this is only really pointing towards my prediction that, not far into the future (maybe 10 to 20 years from now), there'll be a convergence of big name hardware developers into purely digital mediums. At that point, physical hardware will probably cease to exist entirely (with respect to consoles, not PC).
PS6 and PS7 will probably exist, but I find a PS8 or PS9 actually quite far fetched given this increasingly digital, and modular, landscape.
So you can get previously exclusive PS games on PC, and at a cheaper price. Sony are doing great job selling the idea of a PS5.
It'd digital, it should be. AS opposed to PS store charging 70, digital games should be much less. Physical has the advantage of selling afterwards. (It cost me £7 overall to play this)
$60 is too rich for my blood. I'll wait for the PS5 version to become $30 New or cheaper by Black Friday 2024.
Why do games cost more on consoles than on PC?
