Update: NIS America has now confirmed to us that the upgrade path from PS4 to PS5 for Trails into Reverie will be a free one. You'll be able to upgrade both physical and digital copies bought on PS4.
Original story: The JRPG master Nihon Falcom has attached a 7th July 2023 release date to the upcoming Trails into Reverie for PS5 and PS4, which looks to conclude the Trails of Cold Steel storyline. A long time coming following a Japanese launch in 2020, you can see more of the game in a story trailer embedded above.
Of course, this isn't the only Trails action fans have to look forward to in 2023. Trails to Azure comes first in late March, which serves as a follow-up to this year's Trails from Zero. The highly regarded JRPG earned an 8/10 in our PS4 review, which said the long wait had been worth it.
Trails into Reverie will offer a PS4 to PS5 upgrade path, but it's unclear whether it'll be free or a paid option. Physical pre-orders are available now on the NIS Europe website. Can you cram yet another big RPG into the 2023 calendar? Make a schedule in the comments below.

And it still looks like a PS3 game.
It may be just me but if you are familiar with the trails lore and have not played Reverie yet if you watch the trailer you may have stuff spoiled.
I would suggest not watching it. If you want to play the game now there is a fan translation of the steam version.
I can not imagine what a "PS5 version" will add to this series. The PS4 version is barely distinguishable from the Switch version other than framerate and them not screwing up the font with that low res blurry thing they chose on Switch.
This series is burying me under backlog. I'm like 100 hours into TCS3 and still not onto 4 yet!
Another JRPG for the unpurchased backlog pile that I’ll pick up after I get through the purchased backlog pile. Picked up Trails of Cold Steel 1 on Vita way back when and have yet to start it 😅
Finally! So excited to continue this journey. An absolutely expertly crafted series.
I won't watch the trailer but I'm definitely there day one for this! SF6, FFXVI, and Trails into Reverie all within weeks of each other? Going to be a really great summer for me!
Wow was expecting it late August but NICE! I even paid extra for DHL postage (big yikes cost for UK to Australia) so this means I'm basically playing it just over a month earlier then expected (assuming they ship it a little bit before launch, DHL to my place in Australia is QUICK BAYBEE)
KEEEEEN
Cool.thats a lot of trails of cold steel games.i still need to finish the first one.amazing games.and yeah i got a lot of games to play also.my backlog of games is big.trails of reverie looks good. word up son
@NEStalgia CS4 is even longer…. Think I was around 150 hours by the time I got all the trophies.
So excited for this game! I ran through the entire series last year and had a fantastic time. Truly incredible character development and world building.
Just DEAR LORD DO NOT START WITH THIS ONE XD
I just barely started Trails from Zero and seeing those four in the artwork. It's like damn I really gotta catch up on this series fast. I'm loving it so much already
@TripleKing333 (sounds of intense sobbing mixed with maniacal laughter)
They need to get all the games on PS4/5 already.
I started with Sky on PC, but man, I would love if it was on PS4/5.
I'd like to get em all on the same system, and I prefer to plasy these sort of games on a console.
@Mauzuri Very true and I agree with you but good graphics help with immersion aswell.
Whish they can update it for once, doesn't have to be top of the line.
@RawnDawn They're too busy cranking them out to work on visuals. It seems like every year there is either a new game released or one announced.
Sooo excited for this. One of my favourite game series.
Nice to finally know when my big holiday is gonna take place^^ I'm gonna DEVOUR this game!!
Meanwhile, I still need to finish Trails in the Sky SC.
This'll be fun when I play it a decade from now.
@NEStalgia lol. I finished TOCS3 and now I am trying Sky 1 and 2 before 4. Ugh. It’s a great problem to have!
Looking forward to getting into this series, I'm starting with trails from zero. Not sure if that's the best but trails of cold steel's graphics are super off-putting.
Awesome news about the free upgrade, and that they finally confirmed a solid release date.
@Cloud39472 Falcom has always been behind on graphics quality but puts time into world building/characters instead. Cold Steel 1&2 originally being PSVita games does make them age much worse than the 2D sprite/3D backgrounds of the Sky/Crossbell games.
@Ralizah DO ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
It's still my favorite game of the series... as my pfp shows lol
@cjay_001 I think I stopped near the end of Ch. 6, so I shouldn't have too much more to plough through.
