As celebrations sweep the nation of Argentina following its World Cup victory over France, FIFA 23 developer EA Sports has its own reason to pop open a bottle of champagne: the latest football simulator has just secured its 10th Christmas number one at the top of the UK sales charts. Counting only physical purchases, sales surged by 67 per cent compared to last week to hand it the top spot.
This is the tenth time a FIFA title has been top of the UK sales charts for the all-important visit of Santa Claus, with just the Call of Duty series coming anywhere close to matching it. The FPS franchise has been top nine times at Christmas, while Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Red Dead Redemption 2 have also taken first place in more recent years.
Elsewhere, God of War Ragnarok drops to third after a 23 per cent decline in week-on-week sales, and the only new entry in the top 10 is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion in eighth. It sold best on PlayStation when accounting for physical copies, with 70 per cent of purchases for the PS5 version while 12 per cent opted for PS4.
Here's the latest top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 17th December 2022
- FIFA 23
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- God of War Ragnarok
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Pokémon Violet
- Nintendo Switch Sports
- Pokémon Scarlet
- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion
- Minecraft: Switch Edition
- Just Dance 2023

We'll done FIFA. Shame it will be the last (in name at least)
Dam wish had been GOWR.
@Member_the_game Suspect whatever they call it next year will still do just aswell
@IAmAshCohen17
Probably
I'm also hoping there may be a little more competition for EA too if someone else buys the rights to use the FiFa branding
What the heck that Mario kart is doing there? After how many years? Kudos to Nintendo really!
@IAmAshCohen17 Given that it’s going to be a Harvest Moon situation. I suspect some people will follow the brand rather than the game.
Then some of those people will probably think that FIFA is now bad and stop buying it rather than move to be new EA brand.
8th isn’t great for Crisis Core, given that the other releases are months if not years old at this point.
However 82% on PS is good to see. I wonder what the XBox % was, 3-5%?
all those parents paying 60ish for fifa, and you know its going to be in sales boxing day
@Fight_Teza_Fight Disc yes but don't forget Xbox is heavily digital now. These sort of boxed sales are really only good for PS and Switch
Looking forward to EA Bally McFootball being number one next Christmas.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Aside from 82% on PlayStation, with 70 of that from PS5 and 12 from PS4. Switch was 12% and Xbox was 6%.
@Sam_ATLUS And again the numbers prove that microsoft had no other choice than going the subscription path.
Look on the bright side…that’s the last time FIFA takes the Christmas top spot.
Switch takes 7 spots haha 💕
@Nightcrawler71 To be replaced by EA Club Football or whatever they're callin' it.
@Fight_Teza_Fight I would expect Final Fantasy type games are a bit of a niche product in the UK at least, especially at this time of year when up against the fifas, cods, mario karts etc.
What a spectacle that World Cup final was. A joy to watch.
Vamos Argentina! Yesterday went to obelisco, so happy!! Saludos a toda la comunidad de PushSquare.
Not surprised that the GOAT Messi completed football.
@2here2there it really is unbelievable. Great for Nintendo and the series but terrible for fans who have been playing this game since May 2014 on the WiiU….so ready for a new entry
MK8D is Nintendo's GTA V, lol.
@rockodoodle At least we have the booster course DLC now. We went so long with no new MK content of any sort.
@Ralizah they add some life to the game, but it’s still upsetting to me that the Switch never got its own proper and unique Mario Kart.
If both versions of Pokemon counted as one I wonder if it would have topped it.
