Actress Annie Wersching, who played Tess in the original The Last of Us game, has passed away at the age of 45. The star – known for a variety of television roles, including most famously 24 – had been battling cancer since 2020, but continued to work, and featured most recently as the Borg Queen in Star Trek: Picard.
Wershing’s husband, actor Stephen Full, released the following tribute, via Deadline: “There is a cavernous hole in the soul of this family today. But she left us the tools to fill it. She found wonder in the simplest moment. She didn’t require music to dance. She taught us not to wait for adventure to find you. ‘Go find it. It’s everywhere.’ And find it we shall.
“As I drove our boys, the true loves of her life, down the winding driveway and street, she would yell BYE! until we were out of earshot and into the world. I can still hear it ringing. Bye my Buddie. ‘I love you little family…’”
Our thoughts go out to Wersching’s family and friends. A Go Fund Me has been setup to help with medical bills and funeral expenses.

Such sad, cruel news.
My wife and I met her at comic con in London a few years ago, she was so excited because she'd never done it before and we were her first photo op, she was almost more excited than we were, it was absolutely amazing. And in her panel she was answering all the questions with such joy, she even went into character as Tess when I asked her about the recording sessions. Genuinely devastated to read this.
Devastating. She was a great actress. One of those who always seemed to pop up in the TV I was interested in. Then her appearance in The Last of Us just kinda cemented her for me as a favourite. Rest in Peace.
Incredibly sad news =(
RIP Annie & thank you
Such sad news to read. She recently had a story arc on the show Tv Rookie and it makes me wonder if what happened to her character was due to the actress' health. I had no idea she was suffering.
May she rest in peace.
RIP, she voiced and played one of the best characters in gaming
It’s just horrible, she was a great actress and I noticed in Runaways that she was pregnant so she’s clearly left behind a young family.
Eff cancer. It has got to go!
I'm so sad to read this. I loved her in 24, and followed her career from that point onwards because she was a terrific actor.
When is this cancer sh*t gonna end!?
Ugh, it's a rainy Sunday afternoon here and this isn't helping. So tragic. Prayers to her friends and family...
Noooo, she was also in Enterprise and The Runaways. Brilliant actor in a couple of my favourite TV shows. Sad to see her pass.
F*** cancer. Hate this stupid disease.
Sad news. She will forever be Tess for me. She was perfect. Rest in peace.
Ugh that's depressing. My condolences to her family.
Sad to hear this...
Also, isn't it weird that we just got to see her character in TLOU TV show, played by Anna Torv, killed off this week?
I was still recovering from that fictional death, let alone now to read that Annie Weraching passed away IRL.
Lots of love and strength to her family and friends.
45 is too damn young. Sad, sad news.
*****. That's why I recognized her name...
Terrible news, she was so amazing in The Last of Us, so young. Ugh, this is sad. I hope her family is holding up, tough times.
Damn, didn't know this. I was wondering why she didn't played the role of Tess in the serie, because she was perfect for that role. But I had no idea about the cancer. Loved her in 24 too. Really sad news 😢...
I had no idea she played Tess,I just remembered her from my favourite TV show of all time 24.She was an excellent actress and this is terrible news at such a young age.
Man, sad news. RIP.
Thats mess up.r.i.p.word up son
Having lost my Grandad to cancer this Christmas just gone. I can confidently say that it can go F*#+ itself!
As for Annie I hope she got to see last week's episode of TLOU to see Anna Torv put in a great performance of a role she made such a fan favourite.
Hold up, why does a Hollywood actress need help paying the medical bills? RIP ans God bless
@TheCollector316
If cancer and alzheimer's both went away the world would be so much better.
@vrubayka
I take it you aren't American.
i never realized she was in 24. i loved her on that show.
The first time I saw her was on 24 as Agent Renee Walker. I was initially disappointed that she wasn't reprising her role as Tess in the series, though I had no idea she had cancer. Such a tremendous, devastating loss indeed
Gutted. Sleep well. You'll be missed.
Absolutely terrible news. 45 is no age at all. She will be terribly missed. RIP, and wishing strength to her family at this awful time.
Really? F**k. Same age damn she was the queen B, I’m just done watching that too. Rest easy
I only knew of her as Tess from TLoU but she was so good. All the characters in TLoU were strong but she really stood out for me. Shocking news.
Terrible news. I absolutely loved her performance as Tess. RIP
Oh man, such sad news. I was watching The Last of Us: One Night Live on YouTube tonight and the news dropped shortly after they performed “that” iconic scene on stage. She was Tess through and through. What an incredible talent.
Gutted, she was a fantastic actress. God i despise cancer.
Holy *****, so ***** young man! May her soul rest in eternal peace 😢😢
F#$*@ing cancer
Oh that's awful, I'm so sorry to hear this
Such sad news, lovely words from her husband, really shows how much she was loved. R.I.P
Not that I totally disliked the Anna Torv version but the OG game version was the best version wherein Annie's version depicted her as a rightly feared & respected badass to then flipping that entirely on its head when insisting Joel complete the task & take Ellie to Bill & Frank's,with that emotive speech teasing but never revealing the true nature of their past together.
Part of me would've liked to have seen a prequel or dlc explore that backstory further though much like Anakin in the Star Wars prequels it would've had an inevitable dark finale so possibly for the best we didn't find out.
In any case, the definitive Tess & way too young. Cancer can bugger off. RIP & thank you Annie.
Sad news. She made 24 for me as her character made jack look like a big jessie. Cancers an awful disease and i have the upmost respect to anybody who has to face that battle. Gave everybody a like here as your words are such lovley things to read. Have a good day everybody 👍
Way to young to pass away my condolences I wish her family all the strength in this horrible time.
I was just thinking about her this morning, wondering that, if she didn't get to play Tess in the series, she would appear as a new character in season 2. I can't believe she's gone, she was such an amazing actress and wonderful person.
What the hell??? She was amazing 🙁
My condoleances. What sad news. She shall be missed.
Just heartbreaking. RIP, Annie, thank you for all the joy you brought into the lives of complete strangers. My condolences to all your loved ones.
Absolutely horrible news. 😥
So young. So sad. My condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
Considering her time in the game is relatively short she leaves such a lasting impression. I've played The Last of Us countless times and usually the openings of games can get a bit boring, but Tess is such a great character and is played so well that it never gets boring. A great legacy to leave behind.
Rest in peace Annie, I loved her performance in both 24 and The Last of Us.
Hope her family & friends make it thru this, I send all the happy vibes in their direction.
@Cpt-Price Not everything can be solved by throwing alot of money at a solution sadly.
