Emmy award winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge has apparently been tapped to lead an Amazon adaptation of Tomb Raider. The English actress, who wrote and starred in Fleabag, is allegedly only on deck for the scripts and will not star as iconic lead character Lara Croft, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, it’s claimed that she’ll also executive produce.
Amazon is going big on the Crystal Dynamics property, having also snapped up publishing rights to the next video game in the series. At the time of that announcement, it was alluded that a TV series could follow, and this is the first we’re hearing about the juggernaut’s plans. A second Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander was at one point planned, but was scrapped due to licensing issues.
The likes of The Last of Us and The Witcher have proven recently that video games can make successful transitions to TV, with both franchises proving humongous hits for HBO and Netflix respectively. Amazon wants to get in on the action, and has also signed a deal with PlayStation Productions to bring God of War to Prime Video.

If she’s involved this has a real chance at being good. I look forward to it!
This would have been a great series for PS to have gotten that could have been expanded into a TV series, same with Deus ex. Partially why I was perplexed with Sony not trying to acquire these studios from SE.
Was concerned when I thought she’d be the actress, thankfully that isn’t case. Hopefully she just goes back to the original character.
@thefourfoldroot1 Can you imagine??
Lara looks at the camera and says “Being proper and sweet and nice and pleasing is a ***** nightmare. It’s exhausting.” lol
Yup, let her destroy Tomb Raider as well as James Bond. Great idea.
Oh dear. Apparently she was ruining the new Indiana Jones movie and is now being cut out as much as possible. This is bad news as a Tomb Raider fan.
@R_Ryder Where did you get that information?
@SolaceCreed As far as I'm aware, there's a new Bond movie going into production next year.
@LN78 Nerdrotic I think. Actually it was MR H Reviews.
@R_Ryder Ah. The cinematic equivalent of my uncle who works at Nintendo.
@LN78 we’ll just have to wait and see. I’m just sharing what I heard. Hopefully it’s okay. Amazon have been hit and miss recently.
@LN78
Depends what they do with it.
They either need to reboot it completely because of Waller-imbecile or keep going with him being dead. There's no way they can say he survived.
@R_Ryder It's best to just disregard anything that comes from any of the so called "fandom menace" pundits (heel vs babyface, Doomcock et al) when it comes to LucasFilm news. It has been demonstrated multiple times that they basically just a) believe anything that comes to them no matter how dubious the source as long as it makes Kathleen Kennedy look bad or b) point blank make stuff up.
@SolaceCreed Oh it's a complete reboot. Bond was going to die at end of the last film with or without her involvement - it was Daniel Craig's number one stipulation for coming back for another movie after "SPECTRE".
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Ha Ha
I wish she was starring in it. It'd be a nice spin on the franchise. I'm intrigued, though. It's an easy enough formula, and that's what has made it so frustrating that both previous incarnations missed the mark.
@LN78 it great entertainment though. I got more enjoyment from watching heels v baby face and nerdrotic coverage of Amazon Lord of the Rings than from watching the show. Nerdorotic is particularly fab.
Well if she can give Ms Croft a British sense of humour in it then it might be quite good.
@R_Ryder They're all just click grifters. Their endless anti-woke shtick got boring about five years ago.
Well, both Lara and Phoebe were born into vast amounts of wealth 99% of the population wouldn't see if they saved every penny they made over a lifetime, and are also the beneficiaries of innumerable elite connections that enabled them to pursue their passions without the threat of failure, so they're pretty similar in my opinion.
Wonder who will be the new Lara Croft.
@SolaceCreed She only did minor writing work on the Bond film, all dialogue related.
She is an absolutely excellent writer.
She’s a great writer but seems to be spread about as thin as a pancake so it’ll be interesting to see if this actually sees the light of day.
It's amazon studios, you know it's going to be bad
@ChrisDeku
Matter of opinion, I think all her writing is absolute ***** to be honest.
@SolaceCreed well the opinions that matter awarded her a bafta award, 2 golden globes and 3 primetime Emmys. She'll just have to take your opinion on the chin I guess.
Good! I'm watching Fleabag right now and it's so cleverly, perfectly executed. She's an absolute talent
@ChrisDeku
Yes because awards given out for money and bribes as has been proven in the past and given to films that really don't deserve it are an indication of something that's worth seeing.
Awards mean ***** 😆
Fleabag was one of the shows that got me into watching British shows — LOL funny, and brilliant. Having Phoebe onboard with writing/producing can only be a good thing.
@eagletrippin Fleabag is great all the way. enjoy.
That’s not good. Tomb Raider needs a writer/director like Alex Garland to make a quiet, tense and spooky thriller.
@SolaceCreed Yup, the only thing that matters is the opinion of random guys in video game website comment sections. She’s gonna be gutted when she realises you think she’s garbage.
@ChrisDeku
That's not my point, but nice try 😉.
Tomb Raider needs to go back to the original direction. Badass treasure hunter. It won't though, not with Amazon, and not with Crystal Dynamics and how ashamed they are of the franchise's origins.
Much as when it was announced Craig Mazin was involved in TLOU, this is a good omen. The talent of those making it is a far better indicator of whether an adaptation will be worth a look than the game itself
@SolaceCreed it's fine if you don't personally like her, but this narrative that awards have no worth really is tiresome. Yes, there is some questionable back scratching involved, and they don't always get it right, but they're not worthless and it's incredibly rare that multiple outlets all get it wrong. They are voted by industry professionals who know what they are talking about far more than randoms on the Internet.
@PapaGlitch
Just because a bunch of random people selected to be a panel selects something for an award, doesn't mean everyone should automatically like it. So, yes, in the realms of forming opinions, awards mean squat.
Otherwise everyone in the world would have the same opinion and then it'd be bloody boring.
Example, I like Russel T Davis' stuff. My friend doesn't, doesn't mean her opinion is less valid than mine and I don't feel the need to defend him to her.
@SolaceCreed I'm not saying that means everyone should like it, and I totally agree that everybody liking the same thing would be bloody boring. I'm not even saying you're wrong to say you don't like Phoebe WB, because obviously you're not as it's your opinion (I myself thought Fleabag was alright but by no means part of her fanclub).
My only point was you shouldn't dismiss awards as worthless because you disagree with them because, by and large, it is not random people on a panel who vote for but people who make TV and film who generally know what is objectively well made
Slightly tangential to the crux of the article, but this sentence hurt my heart:
“A second Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander was at one point planned, but was scrapped due to licensing issues.”
That sucks, to put it plainly. I would’ve definitely watched that. 😾
Totally confident in Waller-Bridge’s writing ability. She could be exactly what Tomb Raider needs in that regard.
That will suck then.
@SolaceCreed On the other hand Killing Eve and Fleabag plus the last Bond's issues were set in stone before she was attached.
@R_Ryder Some advice don't take anything he says seriously as he's just another right wing agenda driving Youtuber looking for clicks and twisting and making up narratives that don't exist. Actual credible sources haven't reported anything like this about Indy, Youtubers like him are just moaning because a woman is involved heavily with an Indy film.
@WallyWest
As per the ending maybe. But the script was all her and it sucked.
Why have an actor like Rami Malek as the villain and give him absolutely nothing to do?
@PapaGlitch
I'm not saying they aren't capable of sometimes getting things right. But more often than not, the films and shows that win something have an agenda to them, rather than them voting for the actual best shows as the public normally view them.
It's actors like Leonardo Di Caprio I feel sorry for, does some amazing films and wins nothing, then wins one for a poor adaptation of one of my favourite books. Not even he could save that script.
But as I say, everything is open to opinion. Like I said before, I can disagree with you, but it doesn't mean you're wrong, as we're talking about opinions and not facts.
@WallyWest Gotta admit, not heard a lot about the Indy controversy, Crystal Skull was bad enough to make me question if Steven Spielberg had started to lose his magic touch.
@SolaceCreed
"But the script was all her and it sucked."
This is a blatant lie that can be disproved by a one minute Google or reading the Wikipedia page.
She provided a script polish to an already completed story. Her work centered on dialogue, not major plot points.
@ChrisDeku
Get over the fact someone else doesn't love her like you do and move on. You're fairly boring at this point.
@SolaceCreed PWB did a late stage character and dialogue polish at Daniel Craig's insistence - he was a big fan of "Killing Eve". So @ChrisDeku is correct.
@LN78
I literally hate all her work, so I don't really care if you guys both do, that's your likes and your opinions. As I said before, I don't like the stuff she puts out, so it puts me off of the Tomb Raider TV series.
Move on.
@SolaceCreed I'm not her biggest fan either (I'm just a major Bond stan) so your opinion doesn't bother me in the least. You're just incorrect in thinking that she had such a major influence on the "No Time To Die" screenplay.
@SolaceCreed You are writing literal lies then having a hissy fit when you’re called out.
I’m going to guess that the reason you don’t like her is because she’s a woman who’s hugely more successful than you’ll ever be in your life.
What a stereotypical casting. Doesn't she already become Indy take over?
Exciting news! I loved the original films and the recent reboot, as well as the first two reboot games (I still need to beat the second and play thru the third).
