We all no elden ring will win goty
God of war ragnarok.elden ring.sifu.horizon forbidden west.teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shredders revenge are my top 5.word up son
It really was a great year for games, some bangers there in all categories, GOWR the best of the lot for me but I happy with any of those GOTY nominations apart from Stray which I enjoyed but it is no where near GOTY material.
Anyone know if Neon White is getting a physical release?
i don't know why some people feel uncomfortable when they see gow nominated for goty
Rooting for Vampire Survivors!
I am sorry for repeating myself, but I am in the middle of playing GOWR and I cannot believe how good it is. I liked the 2018 game but I did not love it. This game is better in every way. It looks better (obviously). The combat is better. The story is better and the side quests are better and full of character development. I was expecting to like the game, not have it be my game of the year.
People keep saying 2022 sucked for gaming, and then I look at all the must plays and the non-stop barrage of big games from Japan and wondering what people are talking about. 2022 killed my wallet.
There's a few funny nominations here though. A Fromsoft game nominated for best story? Isn't that like nominating Stephen Segal for best actor?
Fighting games is KoF vs a bunch of minigame type games.
Mobile Game of the Year nominated Diablo Immortals?!?!? ROFL!
All in all I think game design and GOTY would floor me if they didn't both go to Elden Ring. Players choice type things aside, I think on a very fundamental level that game achieves something rare, something like that doesn't happen every year. It's not a game I'll ever see all of or play all the way to the end, and yet it doesn't matter. It doesn't need to be played to the end. There's more than enough gameplay to entertain and create wonder even if you never leave West Limgrave. I like to compare it to something like Street Fighter in the arcade. Even if you never beat CPU controlled Ryu once, you still go up to the machine and put a quarter in again because it's still a good game, even if you always lose.
I can't say it's my personal favorite or most enjoyed game of the year, not necessarily by a long shot, but it has that addictive hook that makes me still keep coming back to it despite never clicking with Souls games before. I can say I appreciate what makes it a rare occurrence deserving of accolades especially by the industry.
I'd definitely go for Cuphead for animation for much the same reason. It's such a rare display of the purest degree of animation. And Stray for art. For whatever faults it has as a game, the art direction is just completely stunning. HZD is masterful in terms of art, but, Stray's art direction is what makes the game appealing despite technically lackluster gameplay elements. I'd look at an art book of that endlessly. Except the eyes in the sewers. I will not look at that. Ever again. LOL.
These categories are much better than the ones at TGAs.
If HFW doesn't win best technical game, you can take my eyes out.
@Mostik for single player games, sure .
@mrpunisher maybe some people are tired of hearing about it
@nomither6 normally they should be tired of hearing about elden ring
@NEStalgia The trouble with Diablo Immortal is it's awful predatory monetisation. As an actual game it's core loop is wonderful and worthy of praise.
For me it's impossible to separate the two, sadly that monetisation strategy completely ruins what is a great game at it's core. But I could see how DEVS - this is DICE after all they are the ones voting - could appreciate what the game does really really well.
Slightly surprised Immortality didn't make the Game of the Year shortlist. Seems like the sort of game DEVs usually vote for at DICE. Lets not forget the last 3 DICE GOTY winners were It Takes Two, Hades and Untitled Goose Game.
Glad to see Horizon: FW get lots of nominations again. While the game is not without it's flaws technically it is a masterpiece.
But really it's just lots of great games, they are all winners, as are we.
@themightyant True, yet as you say, the monetization isn't really separable because of how interwoven it is into the gameplay design, so it's surprising it got nominated really. Though it may be more indicative that not much of note released on mobile this year. Anda hard category to vote considering MOST of it is built in predatory design.
