Forever Entertainment has announced a native PS5 version of last year's The House of the Dead: Remake will launch on Friday this week. With "game graphics and performance adjusted to PlayStation 5", you will get to experience the classic light-gun game without the need for backwards compatibility. Check out the trailer above to see it in action.
Details on the enhanced port are very light at the time of writing, so it is not clear just yet whether there'll be a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade for current owners. If that offer is available, you may want to buy the PS4 edition now at 50 per cent off in the current PS Store sale. Until Thursday, it's discounted to £9.99/$12.49.
In our The House of the Dead: Remake PS4 review, we praised the newer version for bringing back a classic in faithful form, along with offering local multiplayer options. However, we had issues with the controls on a DualSense controller and couldn't look past the ugly menus and UI. We landed on a 5/10 rating.

This game really needs a light gun to work, controlling a cursor on screen with a Dualsense is rubbish in comparison.
However I have a tiny bell in the back of my head that modern TV's can't do lightguns in the way that old CRT tellys could, something about HDMI or the screen pixels being different these day. Tell me I'm wrong if so.
Yeah without a decent light gun it’s a no for me
PSVR2 support 🤞 please
@Loamy yeah I tried this on Switch and the controls were pretty bad, I keep meaning to pick it up on Steam to try it with the Sinden Lightgun. It's how I play House of The Dead 2 these days
@carlos82 Exactamundo. This would be great in VR. Along with all the 90's lightgun games. We need Time Crisis and Point Blank too!
Will the ps5 version support the ps move controllers?
@SoulChimera agreed! I miss lighting games so freaking much. I want the psvr2 just so I can live out my John wick fantasies. Bring back time crisis and resident evil Dino crisis plus throw a few rounds of point blank in for good measure.
@Pinkman point blank. Now that was a good game that could be amazing in VR. Then again so could time crisis.
Would love a new House of the Dead on PSVR2. No point otherwise. Not without some kind of lightgun support for screens anyway.
To have a remake, or new release, in full 3D VR motion control glory though…that would be the dream. In the meantime we have Switchback to look forward to 😁
Will pick it up if it gets psvr2 support
any chance for support of G-Con 2 or G-Con 3?
Hopefully it keeps the move controller/aim controller support & it's a free upgrade
@SoulChimera I've been wanting them for years on my PSVR if they finally get supported but only for the new expensive headset I'll be really annoyed
VR release coming??
I'm hoping someway somehow that this'll lead to sega releasing Scarlet Dawn on consoles
@Futureshark that's right, I have a friend who collects all old consoles and he had to buy an old CRT television to play the light gun games, there's a video on YouTube explaining why they don't work on modern tvs
Did the Switch version not receive an update, which went some way to improve the controls?
For me personally rail shooters on PSVR 2 would be the stuff of dreams. But I doubt it will happen. Imagine a new Starblade in VR !!
@Kidfunkadelic83 I agree 100%, those would almost be a VR seller for me, and i have little to no interest in VR at the moment. But i loved those games.
They need to clean up the menu’s and add some polish to this version, otherwise this is just the teenage mutant ninja turtles game that was brought over to PS5 and all that changed was the logo.
its a terrible remake and has no business being released without "lightgun" implementation. there are guns that work with LED screens so some effort should have been made to either develop a new gun or make an existing gun compatible. otherwise, what is the point? stick to the remasters on the wii or ps3 (via move support) for a better experience.
No light gun no purchase. Surely Sega understand this basic requirement for what is a light gun game? SEGA VR would be awesome, and you can employee me as your advisor for future games because your guys haven’t got a clue
Light gun games and the PS3 with camera and move controller and light gun attachment were the pinnacle of home games like this.
Had about four games that used it and it was great fun for short blasts.
House of the dead
Pirate game
Time crysis etc.
@MoorePs4 there is a modern lightgun which does work on modern TV's
I rolled the dice on this last week, and it captures the feeling of the original, in that it feels 27 years old. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the PS5 version (let’s hope
it’s free and gives some controller fine tuning options).
Still remember playing the original on my mate’s Dreamcast with dual Beretta light guns. Good times!
@carlos82 I've seen the sinden light gun but the old light guns for the nes, snes, megadrive and master system don't work on modern tvs which is a shame
Oh, crap. I just bought it on PS4...
@Dezzy70 the move was pretty good for that. Probably the closest I've felt to the old arcades. Though it's hard to compare cause I haven't played an arcade one for a quarter of a century lol.
Second hand move controllers have taken a drop in price lately, so it's probably a good time for shooter enthusiasts to grab a PS3 and a pair, the games are all pretty cheap too. The gun attachments are pretty pricey though, especially official ones.
Interested only if there’s a light gun peripheral available.
@GamerDad66 says on twitter it's a free upgrade
The worst game i played last year. Its hideous & plays terribly.
Neat news! Never played the game but am curious, will pick up in a future 75% off sale.
Aanndd there's no upgrade option despite the hotd twitter account saying it's a free upgrade the PS4 version has been replaced in the store by the PS5/PS4 version & it says I have to buy it again despite the fact I bought the PS4 version
No free update even though it said it was across a number of sites
Not buying it again
Any update on this ? , They seem to just be ignoring everyone asking about the free upgrade on twitter
Free PS5 upgrade is showing up now
