You can set your watch to the next MLB The Show game, and worryingly it’s that time of the year again! San Diego Studio has started teasing the next title in its annual baseball simulation series, ahead of a release later this year. The cover athlete will be unveiled on 30th January, 2023, with Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez looking like the likeliest candidate right now.
With Spring Training set to get underway in a couple of weeks for most major teams, and the season opener scheduled for 30th March, 2023, we’d expect the game to launch in the first week of April. It’ll be particularly interesting to see if the release is once again farmed out to Xbox Game Pass, forcing PlayStation players to stump up the full asking price for a third consecutive year.
It’ll also be fascinating to see whether PC is added as an additional platform this season. MLB The Show 21 saw Xbox consoles added to the release roster, with Nintendo Switch joining last year. But there’s clearly a huge untapped market on PC, and with Sony bringing many of its major first-party titles to the likes of Steam, we’d be surprised if it wasn’t added to the mix.
While the series is consistently excellent, we can’t shake the feeling that things have been stagnating just a touch in recent years. Hopefully new-gen platforms will get a much-needed visual makeover in 2023, and we’re also eager to see Road to the Show get some overdue TLC after a couple of bum years for the all-important single player mode. But first, that cover reveal!

cant wait have been playing every year sense 09 great game.
I don't play these but with the annual sports games I'm always curious to see if this is the year when something major happens (in terms of game engine, mechanics, whatever)
@Voltan On an annual schedule the games are always going to be iterative. There's usually a big jump between, like, MLB The Show 20 and MLB The Show 23 for example. Less so on the individual entries.
Can't wait to see Sony put it free on Gamepass while leaving us hanging on Plus again!
@Zombie9ers surely it has to be going on PS+ extra
@Zombie9ers from what I remember that was the MLB's decision, Sony didn't really have any say in the matter. Though I too hope it comes to Plus in some form.
I would like to see the studio branch out a bit. I’m not into baseball, but would be interested in a sim like football manager.
MLB publishes the XBOX games iirc. The game clearly sells well annually.I think they should be looking to expand the team & try to experiment a bit.
My brain could make no connection with the name Julio Rodriguez so I can’t imagine a lot of people outside of Seattle buying it for the cover art but with digital sales growing I suppose that doesn’t matter as much.
Asked my wife, who knows baseball stuff more than most guys I know, and she said it kind of rang a bell then she guessed Seattle and said he might have been a breakout star. So, good for him. And Seattle, who I thought had moved to another city, guess that was the SuperSonics. 😂
If I was Sony I’d put this in PS+P since most of us seem to be in agreement that tier isn’t worth it, so it might actually help. 🤷🏻♂️
It'll be some constipated looking dude holding a bat
@Fight_Teza_Fight This reply might not be helpful as it's not a PS game, but Out of the Park is a brilliant game in the same vein as FM if you haven't tried it yet.
I played a bit of the career mode when it released on GP. I like that the game can be as relaxed as you want it or as involved as you want. Had a really good time with it for a couple weeks.
I've played every entry even before it was title the show, when it was from 989 sports. This series peaked in 09 or 10 and went the madden and 2k route ever since. micro transactions and the cards they want you to pay for. I'll get it day 1 but it ain't the same until they show me otherwise
@rjejr he was a rookie last year so I’m not surprised he isn’t well known yet. But in my eyes, he is Ken Griffey Jr.-esque. Try catching a game of your team vs. the Mariners next year and watch him. He’s so fun to watch.
@trev666 You’d think they would put it on PS+ Extra if they put it on Game Pass but it will sell best on PS5 and putting it on PS+ Extra would affect sales unlike on Xbox which wouldn’t sell that well.
I would love it to be Rafael Devers but I doubt that happens. My Red Sox might have another off year because our GM is a joke. But maybe Chris Sale goes back to being an ace and Devers hits for 50 homers… please baseball gods
@Mgene15 Is it the 898 studio/branch from Syphon Filter? If so what a waste I really want a modern Syphon Filter.
@CWill97 My team is the Mets, I live in NY, so the Mariners aren't coming here that often and when the Mets go to Seattle, well there are 162 games a year, I don't need to stay up until 2AM to watch them play. Probably if I were a Yankee fan. My wife sort of knew, so that's something. Good for the kid.
Edit: Marlins, not Mariners, I'm going back to bed.
@rjejr baseball makes it really tough to follow the other league’s teams unlike the NBA & NFL. I’m a Red Sox fan (I hate the Yankees- not the Mets) so we play Seattle at least 6 times a year. Plus seeing Seattle in postseason play was great. He’s one of the upcoming stars for sure. The 10:00PM games for them with all the West Coast games are killer for East Coast fans. So I don’t really blame you haha.
@get2sammyb My wife wants to know what happened to Julio Rodriguez. @CWill97 and I spent some time talking about a guy who isn’t Jazz Chisholm. Did you ever even correct this, all I can find is the DJ article?🤷🏻♂️
