Ten years ago today — that's almost two years before the release of The Witcher 3 — CD Projekt Red dropped the now infamous teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077. It would take another eight years for the Polish studio to releases its open world RPG, but back then, this CG teaser was an absolutely huge deal.
It's been viewed 26 million times since, and to be fair, it's easy to see why. It's a fantastic trailer, even if it doesn't have that much to do with the actual game that we eventually got in 2020. The music, the tone...it's still well worth a watch a whole decade later.
At the time, the teaser had people thinking that you'd be playing as a MaxTac operative — a special division of the Night City police force which deals with extremely dangerous cyberpsychos. While MaxTac does appear in the finished game, its role is limited, with only one small (and easily missable) side quest dealing with the department directly.
Still, it's always interesting to look back on stuff like this, knowing what we know now. It's also crazy to think that, again, this trailer dropped two years before the launch of The Witcher 3. Talk about early announcements!

The "coming when it's ready" at the end just looks like trolling now
I remember this well. This is why we as gamers need to know that CG trailers mean absolutely nothing , they're just concepts. To think that this trailer released in 2013 but the game wasnt in full production
till 2016.
Another cool thing about this trailer is that female cyberpsycho is a character in the game, her name is Melissa Rory and she is MaxTac operator during the events of Cyberpunk 2077. You can meet her I'm the Cyberpsycho attack quest in the Jinguji shop.
I thought that was neat.
@3Above True. It's why I wasn't THAT excited by the first trailer, though the idea of CDPR in a cyberpunk setting was cool.
But it was the next apparently in-engine trailer from 2018 that completely blew me away and ramped up expectation to 11. Frankly we never quite got that game sadly.
@themightyant Just watched it, given how the jump between generation is decreasing, I’d say you might play a game like that in 2 generations (10 years). Not so much because of the graphics but more because of the quality in the overall animation which are often the most reality breaking thing in games nowadays for me (that and clipping, I’m playing forbidden west at the moment and it bugs me how clothes and hair just go trough character model).
Every time I think back to when a specific game released, then realize it's 2023, I think another one of my beard hairs turn gray.
The trailer content itself is pure BS that doesn't have much to do with the final game, but what does strike me, to CDPR's credit, is the look and feel of the world presented here actually is what the final product delivered. Not the themes or content it suggested, but the world from the early trailer here really is the world they (eventually) shipped.
And the most crazy thing about this trailer: It came a couple of weeks BEFORE the announcement of PS4 (https://youtu.be/RiNGZMx2vhY), while the game launched a couple of weeks AFTER the release of PS5.
Can't wait to play it!!... When is the release date??
I've never actually seen this ad
@Constable_What I love Johnny in that quest.
"Coming when it's ready." That was a lie.
I tried the 10 hour demo on my Series X (just got to meet the Keanu Reeve's character when it ended) and was enjoying it quite a bit then bought the game at half price and then.....never touched it again. Not even sure why.
Been so long ago now I will have to start from scratch if I decide to play it again. Maybe one day.
The tune from the trailer is a banger though.
@RunGMhx @themightyant Hopefully in 10 years or so, CDPR can deliver a similar looking game but for real.
Just finished it last night and it was pretty uhhhh......meh.
@ApostateMage He always has something to say, and it's almost always entertaining too. The game didn't have a good start, it was a disaster, but it turned into something truly special for me. Love Cyberpunk.
It's still my favourite game of recent times. Always thought there was too much fuss made about the bugs after the original release period - although I did play it on PC. Been playing it via geforce now recently, and it's the most spectacular visual experience at max settings, with all the ray tracing juice turned up.
tbh as someone who has never touched the game that looked blooming great.
I loved that trailer so much. I honestly rewatched it several times over the years leading up to release. I freaking loved Cyberpunk 2077, but I also played on PS5 (on release) and now a high end gaming laptop after all the updates.
