Simon Pegg, the star of movies like Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, has been confirmed as the voice behind Hogwarts Legacy headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black. Considered to be the worst headmaster in the entire history of Hogwarts, the video above captures Pegg's performance with clips from the booth and voice lines out of the game itself. As Pegg puts it: "He's just a bit of an idiot, really."
Black appeared in the Harry Potter films as a portrait inside Albus Dumbledore's office, and his great-great-grandchildren include Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy.
In the game, the headmaster is described as both a "help and hindrance" to the player-created protagonist. Brand new in-game clips reveal how he's always grumpy and up for an argument, as seen in the trailer. "Be less like Phineas is the message of the game," Pegg comically explains.
Other members of the voice cast have also been revealed. They are:
- Playable character — Sebastian Croft / Amelia Gething
- Professor Matilda Weasley — Lesley Nicol
- Professor Onai — Kandace Caine
- Professor Satyavati Shah — Sohm Kapila
- Everett Clopton — Luke Youngblood
- Mahendra Pehlwaan — Asif Ali
- Nearly Headless Nick — Jason Anthony
- Sorting Hat — Jason Anthony
Hogwarts Legacy releases for PS5 on 10th February 2023, but nabbing the Deluxe Edition will get you in three days early. Are you happy to see Simon Pegg star in a product of the Wizarding World? Let us know in the comments below.

I’ve got one thing to say to the people who pre order this, have fun it looks like a good time.
I will not be supporting this game or its creators.
I won’t be buying this game, both for the fact that I’ve never gotten in to Harry Potter stuff, and for the reason that I cannot state here. I’m just sad that now Simon Pegg - as well as all the developers on this project - are going to be caught up in things that are beyond their control.
I hope that the game is good for the people that aren’t bothered by the other things surrounding this game, but I’m fully on the side of the people that cannot buy it in good conscience.
I will be supporting this game and its creators.

Bit of a shame to see Simon Pegg caught up in all this.
I love the idea of having a Hogwarts headmaster who is a complete d**k, and Pegg NAILS that part from the VA in this trailer.
Its for the greater good.
@nessisonett caught up in what? He was offered a role and he took it. That’s it.
Hurry up February. Desperate to play this now ☺️
Looking forward to it as are the kids. It's going to be massive. I like the idea of Pegg as Phineas Nigellus Black can't wait to see how he brings him to life.
I've never been into the whole harry potter thing but I'll b honest it's gonna be a day one for me , from what I've seen so far it's the type of game I'd enjoy playing
I hadn’t him pegged for the role at all
@brazzios_84 thanks for telling us
@Mauzuri I am not totally sold on the facial animations here or the movement of the characters in general it looks a bit janky but time will tell
@Mauzuri Of course there is. Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup from 2003 already exists. Why reinvent the wheel?
@Jireland92 You’re not wrong, necessarily. Giving Pegg the benefit of the doubt, there’s a good chance - with how long this game has been in development - that he took the role before the controversy started.
But there’s also a good chance that he’ll inevitably be questioned about his stance on certain issues now, and may have not been allowed to leave the project due to signing a contract. Which means that yeah, he’s caught up in this stuff, whether he likes it or not. The actors from the movie franchise had to defend their positions on those topics, and they were involved long before the creator expressed her hateful views.
@Impossibilium are we going to boycott the cornetto trilogy and mission impossible, now?
@Jswift56 the greater good
Ok. That's kind of cool. Big Simon Pegg fan.
I guess everyone stopped reading PushSquare’s disclaimer at the top of the comments section…

This game is ticking all the right boxes with me! I'll definitely be buying a copy at launch to show the devs and Rowling my support for this direction - more of this and less of Fantastic Beasts please ✨
@koverby not really. I mean I know what you're saying, but this is a very tame comment section, considering

January and March are way too stacked for me to consider picking this up in Feb, money would be better spent making a donation to the Trevor Project instead.
I've never been so tempted to pre-order a game just on principle.

I will support the game when it comes on the PS4 in April.
The dev team deserves it!
I also support J.K Rowling
I'm able to separate the work from the artist to a point so I will be purchasing Hogwarts, it looks incredible so far and I'm sure the devs are putting everything they have into the game.
Don't particularly like J.K but the devs and cast don't deserve to suffer because of her words, I still certainly understand and support whoever wishes not to buy the game.
More of the wizarding world is a good thing for me. I love the books and the movies. Who hasn't fantasized about being a student at Hogwarts? It's a bit of good old fashioned dream fulfillment for us. I hope the game delivers.
I like the movies well enough, but I'm not enough of an HP fan to really care about this game.
This is a licensed game and, as such, the only people that low sales hurt is the 119 people who work at Avalanche Software. Rowling gets paid the same regardless of whether it sells one copy or a million, that's how licensing works. She may get royalties on top of that initial licensing fee, but she's already made her money on this game, and she made it before development ever even started.
Rowling sucks, but whether you choose to support the game or not doesn't matter as anything but a statement of personal values. I'm absolutely for that statement, but don't assume that it hurts Rowling in any meaningful way.
@Logonogo Absolutely agree, the characters (including the player character) just don't look as good as we've seen in other games recently like Horizon, God of War or even FFXVI. For such a "huge" project the game just doesn't feel polished enough and it's not just the characters either - as we've seen with some of the spell integration animations.
Nevertheless I am sure I will enjoy the game, even though I am not a big fan of Harry Potter, but I would like to see how they will expand the lore of Merlin, Morgana and the house of Black.
Already pre-ordered with the hope of it improving in the graphical department and for the slim possibility of adding wizards chess in a future update or DLC. You never know, might actually turn out to be a decent game
Excited for the game and counting down the days until the 7th Feb..
I'll buy it after launch, how far after is based on the review
Simon Pegg is great. This news just makes me even more excited for the game.
I'm buying this game just because the "controversy" brought it to my attention. It legit looks good.
I don't know anything about any controversy and i will be getting this game cause my partner is a Harry Potter fan and i like what i see.
The order halls are really cool and how you can choose the one you like and have different characters to interact with leading to replay value.
I am pretty sure the "controversy" is something from outside the game and i don't really care.
An excellent bonus, was already buying!
How's that for a slice of fried gold!
This game deserves to sell well
I'm buying it on ps5 and on my steam deck then I can play it on break at work as well.
its a sad shame ppl are so close minded on this community. i hate jk rowling too for being how she is but doesnt mean i wont buy this game. the devs are not her and your only hurting yourself by not playing what seems to be an amazing rpg. and hurting the devs who put time and effort into this. jk rowling is rich she doesnt care if you dont buy it. so next time you boycott something actually boycott something that really matters. yall are a joke.
@Juanalf EXACTLY!!! AND THESE CLOSE MINDED BOYCOTTERS DONT UNDERSTAND THAT!
@SerJosh97 I just want to thank you using the words "close minded" for a small community that likes to call other people "close minded" for not agreeing with their stuff
@SerJosh97 I mean " hurting the devs" is a bit of a stretch. Don't get me wrong, if the game flops due to a boycott, obviously it'll hurt the devs. But if the likes on this comment section alone are anything to go on, there are more people planning on buying the game (at some point, not necessarily at launch) or at least considering it, than there are planning on boycotting it. They just know better than to actually enter the discussion, so they're just liking other people's comments instead.
The people boycotting this game are more vocal than the ones not doing so, but I strongly suspect that the devs aren't going to be hurt financially at all
Happy to learn that he's in the game! Looking forward to playing he game even more so now.
