Jake Solomon, creative director of the rebooted XCOM franchise and the recently released Marvel's Midnight Suns, has admitted something that we all knew in our hearts but still stings regardless: the legendary strategy game developer is not currently working on a new XCOM game.
Speaking to VGC, Solomon was asked if there were any plans to continue the series, with the last mainline entry in the franchise being 2016's excellent XCOM 2. Soloman replied, "of course, you can ask (laughs), you can join your voice to the chorus ringing out from the hills. I personally have no information on that right now and I say that because, truly, yesterday I was working on Morbius’ abbey outfits and recolours, so I am not working on it. I don’t have any secret agenda, I don’t know anything about XCOM at this point.”
A PC-only spin-off called XCOM: Chimera Squad was released in 2020, and since then, Soloman and the team at Firaxis have had their hands full crafting Marvel's Midnight Suns, which shares some elements of the XCOM series' tactical game design. Marvel's Midnight Suns will be supported with DLC for the foreseeable future, the first of which (released on 26th January) added Deadpool to the game as a playable character.
Are you as hungry as we are to see a new XCOM game on console? Or has Midnight Suns successfully captured your attention in the meantime? Miss a crucial shot in the comments section below.

Well that's a bummer.
I'd love to see XCOM 3 at some point.
There are quite a lot good alternatives in this genre though. Mutant Year Zero, for example.
if the games dont sell enough they cant just keep making them
@Perturbator Phoenix Point is also kind of awesome, in a less polished and more janky kind of way haha
@Khayl Yeah that seems like a good one!
Gears Tactics is also somewhat similar to XCOM but I doubt it will find its way to Playstation anytime soon.
My heart was broken long ago, it's now a dried cardboard husk. Still hurts
This is a shame. I love XCOM, and I don't want to have to keep getting my XCOM fix from the damned Rabbids. Surprised we don't see more XCOM-a-likes like Gears Tactics. Mass Effect Tactics, for example. Or The Last of Us Tactics. Basically, anything tactics.
Bummed, yes... heart broken, nah
XCOM 2 is currently on sale for just €2,50 in EU PSN. That's an abdsurd low price! Even the expansion "War of the Chosen" is just €3,99 (45+ hours of extra content)!
Hope these low prices and no current titles in development is an indication that the studio is having a rough time.
What no port of Chimera Squad???
That's a damn shame.
I was legit hyped for Midnight Suns and it did everything I wanted a Marvel strategy game to do...and did them all in the worst possible way. I hate it, like...genuinely, truly hate it. I put 100 hours into Gotham Knights, and that is not a good game, but I genuinely couldn't stomach more than 10 hours of Midnight Suns.
I desperately wanted XCOM3 (THEY TEASED TERROR FROM THE DEEP IN XCOM 2!!!), but after the disappointment of Chimera Squad and Midnight Suns, I don't know I entirely trust them anymore.
I wish Xcom2 had gone down the terror from the deep route. I get they did something different but I don’t think it quite hit the right spot.
they could at least patch 2 to run/load better, or at least port chimera squad to playstation.
@Sternhammer I would love to know if this runs better 9n a PS5 but I have to agree they run horrible on Playstation 4.
