It's official: Elden Ring will get an expansion at some point in the future. The source of many a rumour, but never confirmed until now, FromSoftware's open world epic will indeed be branching out with DLC. No date has been given, and we don't even have a trailer, but we do know that it'll be titled 'Shadow of the Erdtree'.
All we've got to go on right now is the art embedded at the top of this article. We imagine that rabid Elden Ring fans will have already identified key parts of picture.
When do you think Shadow of the Erdtree will drop? Are you up for an Elden Ring expansion? Stretch your roots in the comments section below.

Bit odd this coming after the one year anniversary.
Have to feel this is Q1 2024 at the earliest and that perhaps they felt pressured into announcing now after disappointment from fans expecting DLC news days prior.
Nice to have an official announcement - just hope we get it some time this year 🙏
Nice will defo pick this up when it drops, enjoyed the game, after a rocky start to it couldnt get into it at start then was hooked.
2023 GOTY here we come.
HELL YEAH! Can’t wait for this
I’m surprisingly interested in this considering I never completed the main game. Looks like a 2024 release.
Well, sounds like I’ll need to find some time to scrape the rust off once I know the release date.
Miquella riding Torrent!
I mostly ignore DLC after the fact but there are exceptions and this is one of them. I am so in for this.
Perfect! It'll be the best reason to make a second playthrough!
We all knew it was coming. I still haven't really recovered from my first Elden Ring playthrough, but I'm sure I'll be ready once this drops.
Time to rise once again ye Tarnished for DLC approaches on the horizon for thee.
Translation: I'm very excited!
Good news indeed.
Sloppy. Far Cry 5 had 3 DLCs less than a year after launch and it was good (sarcasm)
I've already begun my new playthrough with this in mind, as I thought this might be coming. I'll be ready when this drops
Awesome. This’ll give me an excuse to double dip on PS5
@munkholt could be….looks a bit large for a child though, no?
wonder if it'll drop same week as horizon forbidden west dlc 😉
I beat Elden Ring many times. 3 characters, one of them is at NG+4.
From's dlc's always add value.
Definitely on it. Give us the release date.
@johncalmc Do you prefer on-disc DLC?
Xmas release would be nice, but I'll take it when it's ready. Can't wait!
The trend is DLC for FS games, improve upon the base end-game content. As it stands the final stretch (post-Leyndell areas) of Elden Ring might be the most disappointing and needlessly frustrating sections of anything in the Souls series. Hopefully this improves upon that experience which left a bad final impression.
If there is one game that deserves new expansion it is this... Day 1.
I'll definitely check it out once it arrives. Given froms track record of dlc releases, my complaints of the main game regarding reused bosses and bloat should be rectified.
Only unfortunate thing is that the amount of fromsoft fanboys is going to spike again.
I was initially excited about this but then I remembered a lot of DLC is challenging stuff and I could barely survive the game as it was so I’ll probably have to skip it. But if it’s about the same difficulty then maybe.
Lol I was kinda hoping there wouldn't be dlc cause the only souls like game I wanted to play in 2023 was Wo Long. I guess I gotta jump back in and get used to the controls again
N.i.c.e. elden ring is a masterpiece.one of the best games ever made.glad the dlc is coming.word up son
@mrraditch I know everyone hates day one DLC but yeah, I much prefer it. I play an outrageous number of games and I'm not very good at going back to things once I get out of the mindset of playing them.
So I really like Game of the Year editions for games I missed so I can just play the whole thing in one go. If it's a DLC that comes a year after a game, I usually either play the game again to get back into it (like I'll do for Cyberpunk later in the year, or Horizon Forbidden West, probably) or I ignore it. I very rarely play a DLC on its own.
@munkholt there was always the fact torrent had a previous owner that was only touched upon slightly by Melina, right? We never found out much more than that, or did we? 👀
@Ravix My takeaway too: Miquella was torrent's previous master.
You mad genius, Miyazaki. My body is ready.
Now to decide making a new character or keep at with my level 374 Astrologer.
Out of a list of gripes I have with Elden Ring, a lack of content is not one of them. My main issues with Elden Ring being the copy and pasted bosses, the boring side duneons, lousy rewards, and a genuienly awful endgame that quite frankly feels rushed. Now, a DLC could certainly learn from some of these mistakes, I won't lie, but the base game will be forever tarnished (pun intended). I'm happy for those excited for it, but this will probably be the first FromSoftware DLC that I skip. The end game just left too sour of a taste in my mouth. I'm looking more forward to Armored Core
@Daleaf I’m the same. Beginning didn’t hook me. But I came back to it month’s later and I’m having a blast
Yea think it took me about 15hrs for it to click properly. After initial playing it on release was playing an hour or 2 a day just but not really enjoying it. Then something clicked with me cant ecen say what it was ended up finishing it, although the final boss was really annoying.
day 1 without question
2024 release more than likely for the DLC. I'm still waiting for the base game to dip down to $20 New before buying though.
