There’s a chance if you’re not of a Nintendo persuasion you may not have heard of Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. The game – not to be confused with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – featured a physical remote controlled Mario Kart car with a camera attached, and used mixed reality to help create a racer where you build the circuits. Now, a similar experience is coming to PS5 and PS4 in the form of Hot Wheels: Rift Rally.
Developed by the same team behind the aforementioned effort, Velan Studios, you’ll once again place physical rift gates in order to design circuits in the real-world. These will then be represented as a circuit on your screen, using the cameras on the remote controlled car. The toy vehicle, named the Chameleon, has the ability to adopt the appearance of 140 different Hot Wheels cars, so you’ll be able to alter the appearance in-game based on favourites like the Bone Shaker and Twin Mill.
There’ll be a full campaign, featuring various different challenges, as well as a Stunt Mode where you’re able to freestyle without gates. “Our background combining digital and physical play taught us a lot about the mixed reality racing genre we invented, which we used to bring a transformational new experience to Hot Wheels: Rift Rally,” Velan Studios’ Karthik Bala said.
You’ll have two options if you’re planning to pick this up: the Standard Edition ($129.99) and the Collector’s Edition ($149.99). Both bundles include the Chameleon RC Car, four mixed reality gates, and a charger cable – but the more expensive version includes a limited edition die-cast McLaren Hot Wheels car and an unlockable McLaren Senna.
Interestingly, the game will only be available on PS5, PS4, and smartphones at first – although we’re sure other platforms will eventually follow. The release date is locked for 14th March, so this is less than a month away. Is it something you’re interested in at all? Put down some props in the comments section below.

I had the Mario Kart version of this and it was pretty good, the biggest problem was finding floor space to actually play with it but I doubt I'd get another
Interesting… im sure it will be awesome but being on a tv console away from the room probably. Made sense on the switch because it was handheld and you can be at the action. Im sure it will play just fine. Just wont see the cat coming if im glued to the tv lol
Glad this isn’t on Switch so it won’t be taking up any time in the ND tomorrow. 😂
Unless it is and they’re waiting to announce the Switch version then? 😝
I'm a hugh Mario Kart fan but I just couldn't bring myself to try / buy the MK version of this.
It looks pretty cool in principle but unless you happen to be blessed with lots of space in your living area (I'm not) then it'll probably be a one hit wonder.
Cool idea but once the initial novelty wears off it's a pretty expensive thing to have sat gathering dust
I have the Luigi one and it's great fun. Doesn't get used too much but it's so quick to setup i occasionally take it out for an evening to mess around.
Yeah, care about this on PS5 as much as I cared about MK: Live on Switch... Zero.
I have $70 for F1 on PSVR2. Where is that 🙄🏁🏎
I like how you can actually customize it compared to the mk one but other than that, meh.
This would've been perfect for when I was a kid.
I regret getting old :/
Can't see this doing that well. The Mario Kart version didn't exactly set the world alight even being the "sequel" to one of the best selling games of all time. Or maybe the PlayStation market is where this gimmick will really shine.
And for those of us that live in england could we have the prices in sterling please as you are a uk based site yes? We dont all know the exchange rates..loved hot wheels unleashed so this could be a great fun edition when my nephew pops over..
