Sony is likely to have a stranglehold on the games industry this year, although Nintendo looks set to remain a close competitor, of course. On the back of an enormous relaunching exercise, the PS5 topped the NPD sales charts in the United States for January 2023, beating out its closest competitor the Nintendo Switch in both units and dollar sales. Despite this, neither console’s success could offset a slide in consumer spending across other consoles, resulting in a five per cent decline in industry spend compared to the same period in 2022.
Despite the overall slump, Sony will be satisfied with the results. The Last of Us: Part I – powered by the success of HBO’s record-breaking show – enjoyed an enormous resurgence, climbing an incredible 25 places to reach 11th position in the software charts. It charted just a few places behind God of War Ragnarok, and above the evergreen Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. New release Forspoken landed in seventh spot, although it’s hard to determine whether Square Enix will be satisfied with that performance given the scope of the project and marketing spend.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 topped the charts, but Dead Space’s remake did incredibly well, finishing in second position. The other major multiformat release of the month, One Piece Odyssey, also performed sturdily, finishing up in ninth position overall. We’ve included the full list of best sellers below for your perusal. Did you buy any new games in January 2023, and if so, what did you get? Let us know in the comments section below.

Curious to see where last of us places for this month. With march we have the PC launch that will boost it.
Dayum! Consumers be loving them some anti-consumerism! 🤣
@uptownsoul I mean... Where are they even getting that information from? I haven't seen any data to suggest that.
It's not even really comparable when one is in a subscription and the other is full-price anyway.
@uptownsoul maybe you should look at the part that says
Hifi rush isn't out on disc
@Martsmall only Nintendo does not account for digital sales.
@Bkzgr8ezt oh ok thank you
@uptownsoul yeh I wasn't seeing it was just nintendos wasn't counting @Bkzgr8ezt pointed it out
I hope this show continues to do well and it means we get a native PS5 version of the Last of Us 2 and then sometime later Last of Us 3 to close the series out.
@colonelkilgore
I've been saying "consumers do it themselves" for years. It is completely true.
@Green-Bandit Why do you still want the PS5 version for it? Didn't it get updated to play at 60fps?
@mrbone yeah but it's still running on backwards compatibility. that's gotta amount to some resolution loss, not to mention it loads slow as molasses even on the SSD.
I bought tlou remake on sale because of the show. It worked. God damn them.
Ps3 remakes are a waste of time tho. Dead space remastered was fine. At least demon souls I never played it and it did have a huge graphical difference.
@Green-Bandit
No ps4 remasters.
I've seen Bloodborne remakes threads and my brain wants to explode. Just why
@mrbone i don’t need it per say, but i would like to be it up scaled and run in 4K 60 with Sony’s spatial audio. I have a higher scale surround sound system and Sony’s H9 headphones and the sound sony developed for PS5 is really solid, not better than Dolby Atmos, but much better than PS4 games. Plus as we have seen Sony claim that many PS5 purchases are new owners to PS, and sure they could grab the PS4 copy of Last of us 2, but Sony and Naughty Dog could get newer buyers more excited to play the best version of the game. I am all for remasters and remakes if the games that get the treatment are handled right and need it, i will admit last of us 2 is a bit more of a want then a need, but i think to go along with the show and new PS5 users it seems to make sense here, and a Best Buy leaked a PS5 Last of Us, but took it down, so was that a mistake or they know something? It got my hopes up.
@GodofCapcom i’m the wrong guy to ask just why, cause i love remasters and remakes. Within some reason, but i am way more for them than against them. I bought Last of Us remake for $50 digitally on PS Store. Loved every min of it. I want a remake of Red Dead 1 and a next gen of Red Dead 2, a Gears of War collection 1-3, Last of Us part 2 and many others from last gen or even further back, the Dead Space remake is outstanding looking, i have yet to buy it, but i will after i beat Metroid Prime remastered on Switch, that is a top 15 all time game for me, so to see it remastered for $40 bucks and shadow dropped, that was probably my most happen day in gaming over the last few years. It looks and plays awesome and i hope it get’s supported well both Digitally and Physical. However, i love a great new iP, but devs are scared to take to many risks these days, more of them fail then find success it seems, and that kind stinks, i am one of the only few on here that is excited for Sony to enter the service game market and make some shooters and take some risks. I will try and support them, cause the PS4 action adventured me to death.
@Green-Bandit
No ps4 remasters. Nada. Cero.
Not allowed. Prohibited. Banned. Sacred.
@GodofCapcom HAHA, i mean you aren’t wrong they don’t really need to happen. But i like them in some cases. Now PS3 games like Resistance and Motorstorm those i would take in a hurry. I miss those games. Bring back Socom in a live service and i would even try that. Sony has a well full of titles to bring to the modern gaming landscape to go alongside new IP’s. Same with Xbox and Nintendo for that matter, plenty of older games I’d like to see hit the modern consoles, if they have enough side teams to work on them is the question.
How did Miles Morales get a boost? Is that because fo the hype of the upcoming movie or with the announcement that Spiderman 2 is releasing later in the year?
