Here’s the star of HBO’s hit The Last of Us adaptation Pedro Pascal like you’ve never seen him before: playing Super Mario in a gritty SNL skit inspired by Nintendo’s hit kart racing franchise. The spoof – which aired overnight, on 4th February – sees The Last of Us hero kitted out in a red hat and dungarees, as he hits up Rainbow Road in an attempt to rescue Princess Peach.
The dystopian adaptation sees cameos from the likes of Toad, Bowser, and Luigi, as Mario goes all Mad Max in the goofy spoof. It’s all very silly, but underlines the cultural impact that HBO’s new show is having – it’s been breaking records since debuting in January, with the recent airing of Episode 3 achieving widespread critical acclaim.

Brilliant! I've sent this to all my friends!
Every character is bisexual 🤣. This was pretty good. Well play SNL.
This was awesome!
Genuinely brilliant!
@Victor_Meldrew I think we all just had less to choose from at one time.
One thing that I think this sketch misses the mark on is that it's acting as if the new TLOU series is a gritty take on a video game without realizing, it's simply a gritty video game in the first place.
Apart from the laugh track, this was great.
One of the better SNL sketches in recent years. Not a high bar admittedly, but this was pretty decent.
The sad thing is this still feels closer to the source material than the original live-action Super Mario Bros. movie.

@XanderTigerclaw You should be able to watch it here without a VPN: https://twitter.com/nbcsnl/status/1622127831668097024
This was honestly one of the few decent SNL sketches in recent years.
@Ralizah I'd rather watch this as a full movie over the original live-action one.
