Final Fantasy is a series full of nostalgia, it's part of the charm. It looks like Final Fantasy XVI is aiming to go all-in on pulling our hardened heartstrings, however, with a surprising number of references to earlier games in the series being collated by eagle-eyed super fans.
In a thread on Twitter, user MKH130masters and others compiled a collection of visual references caught in the recent World of Valisthea trailer (above) and gameplay accompanying a PAX East panel shown off later.
From musical motifs to recreating iconic shots and conversations, the developers clearly know what they are doing, and we're absolutely here for it.
Did you spot any deep-cut references in any recent Final Fantasy XVI footage? Let us know in the comments section below.

Series has great history.
I'm hoping this would be another ivalice alliance with other games set within this world, but not a direct sequel like 10-2 and the 13 trilogy.
CBU3 did a wonderful job with FFXIV, filling it with lots of love and homages for the series' history. I'm not surprised they're doing the exact same with XVI
These ones are clear, a few in the thread are a bit of a stretch. But still cool.
It might be that English is not my native language, but if I read the title I really don't understand it. Maybe only capitalize game names which might make it easier? I don't know...
Let's hope it also references some of the older games by actually being good.
Just looking to explore another FF game. Thankfully no optional dungeons. The optional one in 15 was a dark maze of wtf.
@Mysterio English is my only language, and I still have this issue with Push Square headlines sometimes. I didn’t have much of a problem with this article’s title, but I see where you’re coming from. They should really look into a different way to format headlines. Either stop capitalizing every word, or fully capitalize or italicize game titles. That would make them much more legible.
Aha. So I wasn't totally crazy when I told my friend I kept hearing Don't Be Afraid from FF8 in the battle music.
But not surprised. Soken is incredible at his craft and very often puts small easter eggs/reference into his music. FF14 is another amazing example at how well he does anything music related.
Super stoked for FF16. It looks and sound amazing all around.
Those super fans eh. Don't miss a trick.
Kool that those references are in there
Is it possible this is Ivalice in the past or in the future? Valisthea kinda sounds like Ivalice already.
Then you have the grand Duchy of Rosaria vs The Empire of Rozzaria in XII and the Dhalmekian Republic vs Dalmaska in XII…
The summons are traditional one vs the ones based on the Zodiac in XII
Easter Eggs/references from other titles are always welcome
