You're probably getting a bit tired of hearing about it now, but in case you hadn't noticed: Hogwarts Legacy is a hit. Launching about a month ago on PS5, the RPG has been selling by the bucketload in the UK, and as it turns out, the same goes for Europe as a whole. According to a new report from GamesIndustry.biz, it's had the biggest launch (for a game without FIFA in its name) since the European charts began in 2017.
Yes, it's had a better launch period than Elden Ring, Red Dead Redemption 2, and perhaps most surprisingly, every Call of Duty of the last six years. According to sales data (physical and digital combined), the game is the fifth best-selling title of the last 12 months, and it's only had three weeks on the market. When you consider the recently delayed last-gen version of the game is still to come, we expect Hogwarts Legacy to be easily one of 2023's top sellers.
Also interesting is the resurgence of The Last of Us games, which have seen huge spikes in sales off the back of the nearly-finished TV adaptation. The Last of Us Remastered and The Last of Us: Part II are both back in the European top 20, with a sales leap of 285 per cent and 315 per cent respectively.
In terms of hardware, we've already seen PS5 sales skyrocket lately in the UK, and again, that's true for the continent as a whole. Unit sales are up by five times over February of last year, thanks to Sony's big push to get lots of PS5 stock in stores.
Here's the European top 20 in full (combined physical and digital sales).
European Software Chart, February 2023

Nice. And without a last gen release it’s particularly impressive. Definitely deserved too. A great game I’d recommend to anyone, regardless of one’s opinion of or interest in the franchise as a whole.
@thefourfoldroot1 folks will be buying PS5's just to play the game. I might get it in a deep sale in the future, but not really a potter fan.
I loved every minute of it. My goty so far... Spider-Man 2 will see to that though.
Happy for devs. Insane fanbase did pump the sales up, but even without mentioning the setting Hogwarts Legacy is a solid game with lovely story, good combat and decent open world (though I got tired of Merlin trials and some other things at the end). Hope, we will see more awesome single-player games after this story of success.
@MightyDemon82 even if you are not a fan, HL is worth giving a try. It gave me some Fable vibes, great attention to the details and the exploration process is awesome, too.
It’s not surprising. It’s a hugely popular franchise and the game is actually good and is exactly what that fanbase has been asking for nearly 20 years now.
If anything I’m surprised no one ever attempted a Hogwarts simulator before. The thing would have sold just as crazy ten years ago as Legacy is today.
The free PR did wonders over this game.
Haven't played it yet but definitely getting it, trying to finish some of my back catalogue then play my newer games. Happy it did well hopefully it'll get DLC & a sequel.
Hogwarts Legacy is probably selling a lot of PS5 consoles as well (especially with the exclusive quest available), already two people from work who have got a ps5 within the last two weeks just for Hogwarts Legacy. This is what happens when a massive franchise gets a proper well made game, if only LOTR or GoT could do it next.
@UltimateOtaku91
Definitely.
The hype and demand for such a Harry Potter game has been building since the franchise first blew up back in the early 00s.
None of the other Potter games ever attempted to simulate the life of a Hogwarts student. People have been demanding it forever but they’ve been ignored until now.
Still crazy that it took the industry this long to tap into the demand.
And to add, the fact that the game is actually good and getting good reviews is broadening its appeal beyond the Potter fanbase. That’s certainly helping with the numbers.
Is that at all surprising? It's a game set in one of the very biggest IPS that exist worldwide this side of Spiderman, Star Wars, and Lego. It was a license to print money from the day it was announced.
@OrtadragoonX yeah as a kid this is the game I dreamt of playing and now these consoles are capable of delivering something like this. Hopefully there's DLC planned, maybe add in another one of the universes wizarding schools (there's 8 confirmed I believe).
I’m almost done with the game but there are some very minor annoyances for me..
the hundreds of caves are lack luster.. it’s usually go down some steps - turn right - one chest with crap loot..
The super easy Merlin trials like someone just mentioned.. there are waaaaay too many and all of them are too simple..
The repeated phrases from the Flu Powder lady, my main protagonist, and ffs how all roads lead to Hogsmeade
Limited enemy variation..
HL2 is gonna be 100x better I just know it!!
Edit: I personally give it 93/100 it’s brilliant regardless and what I’ve always wanted
Revelio dinero! On another note, I’m surprised to see AC Valhalla on that list. I mean it was fun and all, and I certainly put my hours in, but is this spike just because they added one, little, final mission? No way people are buying the game for that are they?
It's just a crying shame that Hogwarts Legacy doesn't feature a time-management system a-la Bully, where you had to attend classes according to a schedule, and that the being-a-student role-play is somewhat lacking. They could have given you time to do longer quests with the time-turner device from the books. I've been doing so much side content already, I don't think I've set foot in the school grounds in what must be at least an in-game month! The professors must think I died somewhere.
@OrtadragoonX Out of interest, do you think part of the reason it took so long to get a game like this (which is fabulous btw), is because we also needed technology to be able to catch up?
Im genuninely interested to see how it runs on PS4 - and Switch especially - because its certainly an ambitious game in terms of scope and im not sure what corners will have to be cut to get it running. Im guessing a lot more loading screens.
Everybody should play this game as it really is quite epic..i know it has its haters but the sales figures are showing there are far more hogwarts fans than detractors...
@StrickenBiged you’re gonna get detention.
@Rob_230
Doubtful. It could have been done on the 8th generation hardware. It wouldn’t be as pretty. But the scope isn’t any further than a game like Horizon Zero Dawn or Grand Theft Auto 5. Which released on older platforms.
I suspect they never wanted to put in the money. HL is the first Harry Potter game on a true AAA budget. In the past they probably figured they could go for A or AA budgeted titles and still make mint.
I think money was the main reason. Why risk AAA budgets (which come with enormous potential problems) when you have a license that prints money? You can made a decent AA game and bank.
WB and Avalanche took a huge risk on Hogwart’s Legacy. Thankfully it’s paying off. But it could have crashed and burned had the game not been geniunely great.
Imo, it should run fine on PS4 so long as they optimize correctly. As for Switch… Man I have no idea how they are going to get this game running on Switch without it being a Vaseline smeared mess.
A sure sign that the world is landing on the side of sanity. 🙏
@NEStalgia There have been a lot of games set in the same universe; even allowing you to play as the titular character, and they were mediocre at best. The last two non-Lego games (Deathly Hallows 1 & 2) had a Metacritic rating 38 and 43 respectively.
@MightyDemon82 I'm not an Harry Potter fan in the slightest but it's a solid game. Really fun.
Honestly, the only thing I really hate about this game is the voice acting, especially for your own character. It's terrible!
I'm about 45 hours in and 9 trophies away from the Plat. Loved every bit of it except the alohomora mini game, which just feels like a waste of time.
Who’s still buying FIFA? Haven’t people learned yet
@NEStalgia Nope. Not even close. Several Harry Potter games were released that didn't sell well. Marvel's Avengers, the comics and the movies were huge, yet the game failed to sell particularly well. Same with previous Spider-man games (before Insomniac), despite Spidey being the most popular hero.
Hogwarts Legacy's success was never guaranteed. It was earned by giving fans what they actually wanted.
I agree with some other comments on here, give it a go. I'm not a Potter fan, haven't read the books, only watched the films once at home because my grandma wanted to see them. I also have 'open world fatigue', never even bothered with the Assassin's Creed series despite my love of history though I loved Witcher 3 and the Horizon games. I'm in my early forties and absolutely love Hogwarts Legacy. Nostalgic for the magic (pun intended) of youth? Try it!
I still can’t believe how good it was. I really thought it was going to be average but it’s such a great game, even if you’re not a HP fan.
@RemembersGems her own story is inspirational too. She escaped an abusive, controlling marriage and made something of herself. I imagine that experience is what drives her to stand up for what she believes in to this day.
I'm loving it. Just a beautiful and fun game. Inventory management is crap early on but everything is amazing imo. They did such a good job with the setting its hard to stay on task. It reminds me of when the first Fable dropped even though it was missing promised (impossible lol) features. Very few games make me feel like a kid while playing
My GOTY as of now. That said this year is ridiculously stacked. A special game regardless.
@naruball I really wonder how much that has to do with marketing. Taking a mega-brand like that and making a tie-in product typically guarantees success, regardless of the end product. Especially in the "preorder" driven games world where people buy before they even know what they're getting. This had years of hype around it, but the "core gamers" aren't ultimately who decides the market, the masses that don't know better are. It would be interesting to see why this one resonated so much more in sales than the previous ones, unless period of time really has more to do with it (very different gaming world in the movie tie-in era, etc.)
Avengers. Terrible as it was, I still kind of can't believe it failed as it did. It had the brand, and gave the impression of being good until it actually got to the monetization. I'm glad it failed, but I can't help but think commercially it's still very surprising it did.
Wow. I knew it would be a huge hit but even beating out Red Dead Redemption 2? Plus COD? That's is extremely impressive.
Well deserved as well. Brilliant game!
Didn't buy it. I wasn't a kid when Harry geek Potter was all the rage.
I'm more interested in games like the last of us, that show maturity.
Not happy that a kids game is highlighting game sales. Where's the option to shoot their trite faces off? Never played it, just watched a friend on shareplay the day it was released.
western final fantasy
@banacheck Free PR worked fluidly. 😁
I admit I expected a trainwreck after the mess of Just Cause 4 on a technical level. Runs fine overall though on my PS5. Not really my thing, but I didn't get it for me. Got it for the wife, both her and her sister are huge Potter fans.
Huge as in dressing up as characters to go to conventions while I look at them like they're mental, as I return to watching my anime. 😄
But they both love Hogwart's Legacy to death (and they are both gamers, not casual.) For fans it's like the ultimate. And these two are in their 40's! They're as excited for this as I am for Spidey 2.
@Rob_230 Nah.
It's not technically advanced. The tech is actually very average.
It'll be fine on PS4. Just be like any open world on PS4 versus PS5 with a bumpier framerate in action scenes and more pop in, muddier textures, but nothing more than any other open world game.
Legacy isn't doing anything tech advancing. What's made it special for the fans is the little details in the world winking at the movies and books along with the dialogue and references.
Basically, what's made it special is the love and respect given to the franchise, not the graphics detail or scope, which are typical open world. Not bad, but not anything pushing any new ground.
So typical is it's layout that it's strange it's taking them so long to lower the resolution and put the thing out for PS4 owners. It was clearly made for the PS4 and then polished up.
If I were a betting man, what with PS5 shortages done, I won't be surprised if they push it and push it till they just cancel a last gen version. They're obviously seeing the bulk of their profits off PS5 than PS4 would do in 2023.
They'll wait long enough to cancel so any pushback will be minimal. That's my completely from the gut not-based-off-any-rumors-or-information prediction.
Time will tell!
Amazing game! Loving every moment. An ESSENTIAL buy.
I still haven't installed the copy I pre-ordered, was waiting for more patches to drop first.
Next weekend may be when I finally try the game out, will have to wait and see.
What happened to all those people who said they were gonna boycott this game? 😂
Absolutely selling 50-60 million
