Sales of the PS5 in Japan flatlined last week, stopping the steady decrease in console purchases Sony has seen in the region for the past month or so. Since hitting the highs of 65,000 systems shifted in the space of seven days, sales are beginning to rest around the 40,000 mark when both models are combined. Case in point: for the week beginning 20th March 2023, 38,964 PS5 units were sold (34,154 disc versions and 4,810 digital editions).
Breaking each platform holder's offering down into their individual models, the Nintendo Switch OLED was named the best-selling console last week in Japan, selling 36,604 systems. Then came the PS5 (with a disc drive) followed by the standard Switch and the Switch Lite. The PS4 sold 1,531 units, while the Xbox Series X managed 450 sales and the Xbox Series S 133.
As for software, Resident Evil 4 took first and second place across its PS5 and PS4 versions respectively. It sold a combined total of 175,003 physical copies in Japan during its opening week. Another new entry was Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key, which took third thanks to its Nintendo Switch version. In fact, the entire rest of the top 10 was made up of Switch titles except for the PS4 and PS5 versions of the aforementioned game turning up in fifth and seventh.

It's definitely levelling off after that big boom earlier in the year. Will probably drop off more in the dry period between Resident Evil 4 and Final Fantasy 16.
But hopefully FF16 does really well, and Sony can find some other games that ignite Japanese interest!
I don’t think Xbox will ever do anything in this region, they just don’t seem to sell at all, although they don’t market it well
Great to see the 2DS there haha
@IAmAshCohen17 Allegedly Sony is being investigated for harming Microsoft's chances of expanding in Japan. Maybe it will play a part in the ABK acquisition.
@GrimReaper I know, thought that was hilarious
Just don’t think Microsoft understands the Japanese market at all
Still a really good week for Sony in the region.
@IAmAshCohen17 Microsoft made a pretty aggressive effort to push the brand in Japan during the seventh gen, including snapping up exclusivity for big titles, commissioning new exclusives that would appeal to the market, etc. and still met with resistance and ultimate failure to penetrate that market. The Xbox brand will likely never catch on in Japan.
@Ralizah yep, I’d agree with that.
@Ralizah I still never got to play Blue Dragon. Oh curse thy Xbox for keeping an exclusive
I do think that some of the noise Sony has made during the whole ABK saga will have some real negatives for them moving forward.
There's a big difference between partnering with developers for exclusive content but Sony has spent millions just to stop certain games ever appearing on Xbox. That was the sole reason they spent these millions and the fact that these deals are now out in the open is purely down to Sony kicking up a fuss over ABK.
@pharos_haven I have it. And Lost Odyssey. And I'd love to play them, but I really don't like the Xbox 360's controller.
If Microsoft ever ships a Series S with a disc drive, I might grab it just for the b/c games and Rare Replay.
@IAmAshCohen17 Arguably you could say that Xbox has no chance to sell well in Japan if all the big Japanese games are 'blocked' from releasing on that Platform.
If you are a Japanese gamer, looking to play Square Enix games - like FF, Forspoken Live a Live etc, you aren't going to buy an Xbox. Even if Sony didn't 'block' them, they'd have a 'difficult' job of competing against a Japanese brand but its almost impossible without those as well.
Sony have been accused of many things, including not caring about the Japanese market so much - but in reality, they don't need to try to win over Japanese gamers because they are the 'only' high-end option to play Japanese games. When you have that big a lead and prevent games releasing on your rival so present 'no' competition, then you don't really need to try. Japanese gamers have 'little' choice but to buy a PS5 to play Japanese games.
As I said, I doubt that MS would ever be as successful in Japan as Sony is in the UK or US for example - even if they were not 'blocked' from releasing Japanese games - but they could certainly be 'more' competitive.
I almost think that Sony will acquire SE. Partly because SE has downsized a lot, disappointed with Forspoken and basically said FF16 won't come to PC after the '6month' exclusivity expires. It 'seems' like Sony and SE will 'merge' but that wouldn't help Sony's arguments in the A/B deal.

Microsoft has also spend millions on games to stop them reaching playstation.
Both do it but only Sony get called out for it.
People cheer when Microsoft do it.
Either cheer or call out on both, cant stand the double standard on things.
I think the PS5 is far better than the switch.
Its easier to make friends and add them with out silly long codes, Better multiplayer without choppy lag that messes up your gameplay, Better sales and ps+ & Trophies just to top it all off.
@Neverwild That's much too general of a statement. Many individuals have issues with large companies like MS buying studios out directly to secure exclusives. While I far prefer the Xbox platform nowadays, I am very wary of these large buyouts. If Sony buys out Square (whom I typically can't stand 90% of their games but that's just me) I will not be jumping for joy, nor was I at MS buying Bethesda (and seemingly Activision).
@Neverwild The point I was making is that all of these secret contracts and agreements Sony made have only become public knowledge because of the protests Sony themselves have made. Sony had secret contracts, not just for exclusivity, but to specifically tell Devs "anywhere but Xbox and Game Pass". There is a real difference.
I'm actually looking at things objectively.
@__jamiie
and Microsoft has same deals with developers but only Sony get ***** for it.
Ofcourse Sony has deals to not put games on gamepass before ps+.
Microsoft does it too, gamepass before ps+.
If you really are that naive to think only Sony doing this then you need to wake up.
@Neverwild Did you read either of my comments???
These secret deals that Sony made ONLY came to light because of the protests they've been making over the ABK deal. They shot themselves in the foot.
That was my point. Stop getting offended by things that you think I've said rather than the things I actually said.
And stop all the fanboy outrage.
Surly every Person in Japan must own a switch by now ? What a absolute juggernaut Nintendo are ! I’ve great memories of Nintendo when I was younger just don’t enjoy most of their title’s anymore.
@__jamiie they were never secret to begin with. Sony has not been negatively affected... yet.
@naruball They weren't being talked about by US senators previously. And those senators are now writing to the Japanese government asking for explanations.
A guy called Destin does a very good and balanced job of talking through all the fine print on YouTube.
