Sony released a major PS5 firmware update just last week, adding Discord voice chat integration among many other changes. Despite that, it's already time for another one. Yes, there's a new PS5 system software update, and it's just over 1GB in size. What the flip does this one do, then?
As you might expect, this is a much simpler update. Everyone's favourite patch note makes its grand return:
- This system software update improves system performance.
We're unsure what this update is targeting precisely, but it must be making some sort of fix to an issue included in last week's big one. It's always worth keeping your PS5 as up-to-date as possible to ensure you're getting the best experience, so while this isn't a mandatory update, you may as well just get it over and done with.

Most likely it's a security fix.
Bug and security fix
@Reeneman @viktorcode Yeah, that sounds right.
Interesting.
My external drive has been slow af since the update last week.
I'm hoping it was caused by the update and it's not because my drive is knackered.
Maybe this fixes it... he said wishfully
Yes security and maybe a glitch or
Two from last wks bigger update is my guess ,as well as system performance
I hope at some point we get a full baked discord app. Where you don't need a PC or phone app to transfer to the PS5.
@Ernimus_Prime were still about 1 century and a half light year away from getting folders and themes , so good luck waiting for that šš
Since last weeks update when I've watched any game tip videos , they've been glitched. So maybe there's a fix for that I don't know.
So back in January there was a rumour doing the rounds that the 7.0.0 release was called 'Cronus' and would enable PS5 games to be streamed. Last week's release came around and it wasn't included and nobody mentioned it. I upgraded (at time-limited discount) to PS Premium on the basis that it might follow on behind at some point...
Forced VRR was no longer forcing VRR, for one thing (it said it was, but the frame rate was still hitching). Hopefully, that is now fixed.
Maybe I'm not the only one to get a bricked PS5 from last week's update.
āContinue where you left offā š please lose it
I just want to be able to check for updates from the Library screen, instead of having to start a game, have it detect an update, then have to quit and wait for it to install. š¤·š»āāļø
Amazing, this update turned my PS5 into a PS6! JK.
@shepherd_tallon, I thought mine was too, I keep getting āPlease waitā, but I thought mine was accessing cloud saves
@DrVenture69 I wonder.
Mine used to load everything very quickly.
I'd power the PS5 on and the external drive would go through the motions for 10 - 20 seconds.
Now it takes 2 - 3 minutes and the USB icon appears at the top of the screen. During that time the PS5 behaves as if the drive is not connected yet - My installed games screen only shows games installed on the console for example.
It's not a major issue because I can still play everything, but it only seemed to start happening after the update.
@Shepherd_Tallon We lost power yesterday for about 15 minutes and my external HDD had to be "repaired" the next time I booted up my PS5. I try to never use it to run games, just store some older PS4 games, mostly form PS+, but it's occasionally doing stuff like that I think. I'm planning on getting a 2nd internal SSD, 2TB drives have bene dropping in price, so maybe I'll just lose the external. Not worth the headache.
@shepherd_tallon, hmmm, maybe a database rebuild, or if youāve got another drive see if the performance is better or worse on that one. I got an external 4TB for about Ā£80 a couple of years ago. I wasnāt paying Ā£700 for an internalš
@rjejr Yeah honestly, I think it will be next gen before the prices of those drives are close to what I'm happy to spend on them.
@DrVenture69 A database rebuild š¤¦
Why didn't I do that?
Will try it now...
Just installed this update and I absolutely love it! SUPERB!
@shepherd_tallon, fingers crossed!
@DrVenture69 That seems to have done it.
It's definitely not taking as long. š¤
Ah, cool. Iāve had to do it a few times when accidentally yanked it out or not had the cable in all the way. Fingers crossed it solves it
This update made my PS5 sprout wings and start drinking Busch Light. I also think it developed a pill problem.
@SystemAddict why? I use that tab a fair bit and it gets you in the game even faster. I loved it whilst playing valhalla as it got you past the loading screens etc and hogwarts loads even quicker and its no slouch anyway..
@Northern_munkey Fine, just Iām a banner man no need in place of a game title.
@Shepherd_Tallon my drive been the same, but only lately I been turning my ps5 off instead using rest mode so I assume that was why.
And... nope... Forced VRR still not working right.
@SystemAddict options for everybody..
@CVCubbington I guess you won't be needing that rumored PS5 Pro being released in 2024 .
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2023/03/rumour-ps5-pro-targeting-potential-2024-release
@CVCubbington Sony did patent that. I still wouldn't be surprised for a software update to unlock some cores. Not for a long time though
@Shepherd_Tallon I had a limit of $100 on 1TB, Corsair is going for about that, but if 2TB got down near $125 or so I'd be willing to pay a little extra for twice the storage. Those PS+ games I never play take up a lot of space. š
@rjejr This my curse too š
I don't know if it's fomo or if I'm lying to myself about how much free time I have, but the games I never play kill my storage š
@Shepherd_Tallon Maybe Sony will announce a PS5 "Pro Bundle" w/ 2TB of storage and a DualSense Edge controller for $600 for people who consider themselves to be "pro" gamers.
I just can't get past $200 for a controller.š¤ I paid that for my PSVR 1 headset and camera combo, w/ Gran Turismo that I immediately traded in for $17 to cover the tax. I bought my 2nd controller on PS5 controller on sale for like $45.
Or maybe the disc-optional or whatever they're calling it PS5 remodel will have 2TB of storage, SSD prices have been coming down. Even w/o PS+ Essential the system could use it, current storage for a backwards compatible system is almost Switch like, as in you need more to game. š¤·āāļø
